FORMATION OF A SMALL RIBONUCLEOPROTEIN PARTICLE BETWEEN TAT PROTEIN AND TRANS-ACTING RESPONSE ELEMENT IN HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS-INFECTED CELLS

The trans-acting response element (TAR) within the long terminal repeat of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is present in all 5' termini of HIV mRNAs and is recognized by the viral Tat protein. Now we describe that the 59-nucleotide-long TAR-RNA exists as a ribonucleoprotein particle in polysomal and heterogeneous nuclear RNP fractions of HIV-1-infected HeLa-T4+ cells. Applying an immunoprecipitation technique this Tat.TAR complex could be isolated from total cell extracts as well as from polysomal or heterogeneous nuclear RNP fractions. Chain Stiffness of Elastin-Like Polypeptides

The hydrodynamic radii of a series of genetically engineered monodisperse elastin like polypeptides (ELP) was determined by dynamic light scattering in aqueous solution as function of molar mass. Utilizing the known theoretical expression for the hydrodynamic radius of wormlike chains, the Kuhn statistical segment length was determined to be lk = 2.1 nm, assuming that the length of the peptide repeat unit was b = 0.365 nm, a value derived for a coiled conformation of ELP. The resulting chain stiffness is significantly larger than previously reported by force-distance curve analysis (lk < 0.4 nm). In Latvia, the first commercial highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) plantings have been established on a few hectares at the end of the 1990th. Since then, a remarkable growth has noticed and today the total cultivated area reaches 280 hectares. ABSTRACTProtease inhibitors represent a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of parasitic diseases such as malaria and human African trypanosomiasis. Falcitidin was the first member of a new class of inhibitors of falcipain-2, a cysteine protease of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Using a metabolomics dataset of 25 Chitinophaga strains for molecular networking enabled identification of over 30 natural analogs of falcitidin. Dipolar Relaxation in Functionalized Poly-p-phenylenes Bearing Ultrastrong Dipoles Perpendicular to the Backbone

Local polymer dynamics are studied in polymers bearing dipoles rigidly attached to the backbone. The compounds are based on cyano-substituted dihydrobenzimidazoles bearing ultrastrong dipole moments (∼12 D per repeat unit) incorporated in a poly-p-phenylene backbone, giving rise to polymers with rigid dipoles perpendicular to the chain. They belong to type B polymers according to the Stockmayer classification. Determination of tyrosine through a FIA-direct chemiluminescence procedure.

A new FI-direct chemiluminescence method is proposed for the determination of tyrosine, based on the oxidation of the amino acid by K(3)Fe(CN)(6) in potassium hydroxide medium, at room temperature and enhanced by the presence of beta-cyclodextrin and formic acid. The dynamic range was linear over the range 1.0-10.0 mgl(-1). A large study of the influence of foreign compounds was performed, including amino acids; and, the method showed high selectivity. The reproducibility between days resulted in a rsd (in slope%) of 4.8 and the repeatability with a rsd (n=50, 10.0 mgl(-1)) of 3.1%, the LOD (s/n=3) was 50 mugl(-1) and sample throughput 98 h(-1).

Role of peat organic matter on isotopic composition of most abundant benthic organisms in intertidal habitats of SW Iceland

The transfer of peat organic matter (OM) from tidal pools of upper littoral to downstream rocky shores and its potential incorporation into marine biota were investigated using the stable isotope approach. Samplings were carried out in September 2004 in two SW Icelandic sites (Osar and Hvassahraun), where we selected (1) areas with shores where grass gently declined towards rocks and, on reaching the sea line, formed small tidal peat pools and (2) areas where grass and rocky shores were not contiguous, rather the grass lower limits were several hundreds of meters back from the shore.
