Total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy of the β -delayed neutron emitters I137 and Rb95

2019

The decays of the β-delayed neutron emitters I137 and Rb95 have been studied with the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique. The purity of the beams provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the ion guide isotope separator on-line facility in Jyvaskyla allowed us to carry out a campaign of isotopically pure measurements with the decay total absorption γ-ray spectrometer, a segmented detector composed of 18 NaI(Tl) modules. The contamination coming from the interaction of neutrons with the spectrometer has been carefully studied, and we have tested the use of time differences between prompt γ rays and delayed neutron interactions to eliminate this source of contamination. Due to the s…

Penning discharge in the KATRIN pre-spectrometer

2014

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is a next-generation, large-scale tritium β-decay experiment to determine the neutrino mass by investigating the kinematics of tritium β-decay with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c2 using the MAC-E filter technique. In order to reach this sensitivity a low background level of 10−2 counts per second (cps) is required. A major background concern in MAC-E filters is the presence of Penning traps. A Penning trap is a special configuration of electromagnetic fields that allows the storage of electrically charged particles. This paper describes the mechanism of Penning discharges and the corresponding measurements performed at the test setup of the KAT…

Phase-sensitive measurement of trapped particle motions

2005

We have developed and applied a novel method for the precise determination of small frequency differences of particle motions inside a Penning trap. In the present case, the frequency differences on the order of 100 mHz at motional frequencies on the order of 1 MHz are used to determine the spin state of an electron bound in a hydrogen-like ion. This novel technique measures the integrated phase difference of the particles' motions relative to an excitation with a well-defined phase. Thereby, the Fourier-limit for frequency measurements based on Fourier-analyses of detection signals can be overcome.

Observation of the Continuous Stern-Gerlach Effect on an Electron Bound in an Atomic Ion

1999

We report on the first observation of the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect on an electron bound in an atomic ion. The measurement was performed on a single hydrogenlike ion ( 12C5+) in a Penning trap. The measured g factor of the bound electron, g = 2.001 042(2), is in excellent agreement with the theoretical value, confirming the relativistic correction at a level of 0.1%. This proves the possibility of g-factor determinations on atomic ions to high precision by using the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect. The result demonstrates the feasibility of conducting experiments on single heavy highly charged ions to test quantum electrodynamics in the strong electric field of the nucleus.

Mass measurements of $^{56-57}$Cr and the question of shell reincarnation at N = 32

2005

Binding energies determined with high accuracy provide smooth derivatives of the mass surface for analysis of shell and pairing effects. Measurements with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at CERN-ISOLDE were made for $^{56-57}$Cr for which an accuracy of 4 $\times 10^{-8}$ was achieved. Analysis of the mass surface for the supposed new N = 32 shell closure rather indicates a sub-shell closure, but of a different nature than known cases such as $^{94}$Sr.

Laser cooling of externally produced Mg ions in a Penning trap for sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions

2012

We have performed laser cooling of Mg ions confined in a Penning trap. The externally produced ions were captured in flight, stored and laser cooled. Laser-induced fluorescence was observed perpendicular to the cooling laser axis. Optical detection down to the single ion level together with electronic detection of the ion oscillations inside the Penning trap have been used to acquire information on the ion storage time, ion number and ion temperature. Evidence for formation of ion crystals has been observed. These investigations are an important prerequisite for sympathetic cooling of simultaneously stored highly-charged ions and precision laser spectroscopy of forbidden transitions in thes…

In-trap conversion electron spectroscopy

2002

The Penning trap REXTRAP at ISOLDE was used to test the feasibility of in-trap conversion electron spectroscopy. The results of simulations, experiments with solid conversion electron sources as well as first on-line and tests with trapped radioactive ions are presented. In addition to obtaining high-resolution spectroscopic data, the detection of conversion electrons was found to be a useful tool for the diagnostics of the trap operation. The tests proved the feasibility of in-trap spectroscopy but also revealed some potential problems to be addressed in the future.

The Ramsey method in high-precision mass spectrometry with Penning traps: Theoretical foundations

2007

Abstract This paper presents in a quantum mechanical framework a theoretical description of the interconversion of the magnetron and modified cyclotron motional modes of ions in a Penning trap due to excitation by external rf-quadrupole fields with a frequency near the true cyclotron frequency. The work aims at a correct description of the resonance line shapes that are observed in connection with more complicated excitation schemes using several excitation pulses, such as Ramsey’s method of separated oscillating fields. Quantum mechanical arguments together with the “rotating wave approximation” suggest a model Hamiltonian that permits a rigorous solution of the corresponding Heisenberg eq…

Ion trap nuclear resonance on $\mathsf{^{151}Eu^ + }$

2003

Laser-microwave double resonance techniques applied to a cloud of a natural mixture of Eu + isotopes confined in a Penning trap has been used to induce and detect nuclear Zeeman transitions. In spite of the complex level structure of Eu + and overlapping spectra from the two isotopes five different $\Delta m_I = 1$ transitions could be observed from which the nuclear magnetic moment can be derived. We obtain for 151 Eu + g I = 1.377 34(6) demonstrating the potential for high accuracy of the technique. The experiment can be considered as a feasibility test that precise spectroscopy data using the ion storage technique can be obtained of very complex ions and under unfavourable conditions.

Non-destructive single-pass low-noise detection of ions in a beamline.

2015

We have conceived, built, and operated a device for the non-destructive single-pass detection of charged particles in a beamline. The detector is based on the non-resonant pick-up and subsequent low-noise amplification of the image charges induced in a cylindrical electrode surrounding the particles' beam path. The first stage of the amplification electronics is designed to be operated from room temperature down to liquid helium temperature. The device represents a non-destructive charge counter as well as a sensitive timing circuit. We present the concept and design details of the device. We have characterized its performance and show measurements with low-energy highly charged ions (such …
