Nonlinear resonances and some of their applications to information processing
2021
The study of resonance phenomena in nonlinear dynamical systems has drawn considerable attention for years. The most studied nonlinear resonance is undoubtedly the famous stochastic resonance, which consists of perturbing a nonlinear system with an appropriate amount of noise to enhance the detection of a subthreshold input signal. Since the introduction of stochastic resonance in the context of climate dynamics, it was later observed that a deterministic high frequency perturbation can replace noise leading to vibrational resonance. Even if this latter resonance was investigated in many areas of science for more than two decades now, it is still receiving attentions. It is the subject of t…
Abnormal peripheral and central visual processing in migraine
2018
Sound induced flash illusion (SIFI) is an illusory cross modal (audio-visual) phenomenon critically dependent upon excitability of visual cortex. A recent study with SIFI confirmed hyperexcitability of visual cortex in migraine; patients with migraine show abnormality of chromatic perception. Here we explored the relationship between peripheral chromatic and central visual dysfunction in patients with migraine
University-wide, top-down curriculum reform at a Finnish university: perceptions of the academic staff
2021
This study examines academic staff’s perceptions of a university-wide, top-down curriculum reform in terms of the management of the reform, the support provided by the university’s administration, and the utilisation of the university’s guidelines. Differences between faculties are also scrutinised. The study was conducted at a multidisciplinary public research university in Finland using the survey method. The data (n = 394) consisted of academic staff’s responses to multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Correlation coefficients, exploratory factor analyses, and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilised to analyse the quantitative data. Responses to the open-ended questions …
Working outside academia? : perceptions of early-career, fixed-term researchers on changing careers
2019
This article examines the perceptions of early-career, fixed-term researchers in Finnish universities towards changing careers. It maps out the reasons this group has considered the change and where they see themselves in five years. As a theoretical framework, a synthesisation of variables related to career change, created by Ryan, Healy, and Sullivan [2012. “Oh, Won’t You Stay? Predictors of Faculty Intent to Leave a Public University.” Higher Education 63: 421–437.], was used. The results show that the most common reasons for early-career researchers to change careers are job-security related stress, job-related dissatisfaction, and salary. Over half of the respondents would like to work…
Depth-of-Field of the Accommodating Eye
2014
Our eyes project information from a three-dimensional world to a basically two-dimensional surface, corresponding to the photoreceptor plane in the retina. In theory, only one plane or surface of world can be in focus at one time. However, the eye exhibits a certain tolerance to out-of-focus images, a feature that is known as depth-of-focus (DOF). The corresponding distance range in which the objects are seen “clearly” is known as depth-of-field (DOFi). Although DOF and DOFi refer to an interval of distances or a dioptric range in the image and object space, respectively, both parameters define a similar concept and are usually interchangeable. This article will mainly refer to DOFi because…
Kultūras atšķirības patērētāju uzvedībā Latvijā un Uzbekistānā, krāsu mārketings
2018
(Un)framing Lampedusa: Regimes of Visibility and the Politics of Affect in Italian Media Representations
2017
The 3rd of October 2013 more than 300 migrants died after a boat sank off the coasts of Lampedusa. This probably was the most dramatic shipwreck ever happened in the Mediterranean, and certainly the one which attracted the most media attention in Italy and elsewhere. Since at least 1992 the Mediterranean has become the unstable ground where the dominant policies of regulated mobility and discontinuous surveillance are continuously challenged by bodies which struggle for their fundamental right to move. This conflict between global regimes of disciplined mobility (Philo 2014) and singular forms of embodied resistance (Agamben 1990) involves also the field of representation and its forcible e…
La incidencia del contexto en los discursos
2007
This book includes several works where the incidence of context into discourse is analyzed from diferent points of view (sociolinguistics, biolinguistics, clinical linguistics, …) and in diferents communicative frames (aphasic conversation, advertising communication, cybernetic communication, …)
