Moderating cultural effects in a higher e-education context? Supervisor's tone of voice in recorded audio feedback
2017
Providing feedback to learners on their writing assignments is one of the most important and time-consuming tasks that a supervisor performs. In e-Education environments, especially in the case of distance learning, giving feedback becomes more challenging because there are often no opportunities for face-to-face interaction. Typically, a supervisor provides comments to learners in written form via email; however, the use of recorded audio feedback (RAF) in e-Education environments has become a viable alternative. This work in progress reports on learners’ perceptions of RAF in a multi-cultural higher eEducation context. Our observations indicate that learners tend to have positive feelings…
Varhaiskasvatushenkilöstön käsityksiä lasten tunteiden säätelytaitojen kehittymisestä – Käytäntöön integroitu koulutus ammatillisen kehittymisen tuke…
2021
Lapset tarvitsevat aikuisen tukea oppiakseen säätelemään tunteitaan. Jotta varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilainen voi tarjota lapsille monipuolista ja sensitiivistä tunteiden säätelyn tukea osana pedagogista toimintaa, häneltä odotetaan oman roolin tiedostamista lapsen tunteiden kanssasäätelijänä. Lasten tunteiden säätelytaitojen tukeminen pedagogisessa toiminnassa rakentuu kanssasäätelijän teoreettiselle tiedolle ja vaatii sen soveltamista käytännössä. Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu, millaisia käsityksiä varhaiskasvatushenkilöstöllä on tunteiden kanssasäätelystä, ja kuinka käsitykset muuttuvat, kun heidän tietopohjaansa tunteiden kanssasäätelystä vahvistetaan työhön integroidun koulutuskokon…
Caitrìona O’Reilly : From ecopoetry to ontopoetics
2022
Caitrìona O'Reilly's poetry is remarkable for its attention to the natural world, to fauna, flora, the four elements and landscapes; for its keen sense of nature's superior and mysterious beauty ("Atlantic", "Octopus", "Six Landscapes", "Bee on Agastache") but also fragility ("Polar", "Iceland"). Without question, it can be described as "ecopoetry". I will explore the fundamentals of O’Reilly’s "eco-conscious" and scholarly work, and show how, in her work, "ecopoetry" amounts to "ontopoetics", which is to be understood as "poetics of being". The natural world captured poetically by Caitrìona O'Reilly is a "perceived" world, i.e. a world seen, observed, felt, touched, heard by a subject. The…
Perfil de la educación física y sus profesores desde el punto de vista de los alumnos. (Physical education and their teachers’ profile from the pupil…
2007
Development of accelerometer-based light to vigorous physical activity in fitness profiles of school-aged children.
2021
This study examined the developmental trajectories of light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in fitness profiles derived from motor competence, perceived motor competence, health-related fitness, and MVPA behaviour. Locomotor, stability, and object-control skills, muscular and cardiovascular fitness, and physical activity were assessed in 510 (girls 285, boys 225) Finnish school-aged children (Mage = 11.26 ± .33 years) over three years. Physical activity was measured using hip-mounted accelerometers. Fitness profiles were identified using latent profile analysis and the development of physical activity levels across four assessments was analysed with latent growth cur…
Nursing students' perceptions of combining hands-on simulation with simulated patients and a serious game in preparing for clinical placement in home…
2021
Abstract Background There is a growing demand to provide complex healthcare services in patients' own homes. However, high quality home healthcare clinical placements are often difficult to obtain, and arranging laboratory-based simulations to provide relevant clinical-practical learning experiences for all students is resource intensive. Objectives The aim of this study was to explore nursing students' perceptions of using a blended simulation approach, including hands-on simulation with simulated patients and a video-based serious game, in preparation for their home healthcare clinical placements. Design An exploratory qualitative design using focus group interviews was utilized. Setting …
Intimate partner violence against women and victim-blaming attitudes among Europeans.
2014
In summary: Academics and policy-makers face many challenges in their efforts to reduce intimate partner violence against women. Investing in public education and awareness initiatives is critically important, as is ensuring that these initiatives are well informed, appropriately targeted and properly designed. Finally, constant monitoring will be needed to assess the effectiveness of efforts to change public attitudes that further victimize the women who are victims of intimate partner violence. What, where, when and how : Finnish children’s perceptions of learning in preschool
2021
To be able to support young children in learning to learn—an ability that requires adapting often-unprecedented changes in society—teachers need to be aware of the ways in which children understand learning. In this qualitative study, 177 micro-interviews conducted with 41 Finnish children were analysed using an abductive method to understand their perceptions of learning in a preschool. Learning was perceived as learning to do or know things. Academic skills and contents, followed by motoric skills and sports, arts and crafts, socio-emotional skills and everyday skills, were mentioned as the learning contents. In addition, intentional teaching, teacher-initiated exercises, practising, cogn…
The role of emotions and literature in public deliberation: the figure of Martha C. Nussbaum ‘s perceptive equilibrium
2015
This article argues that literature can play a key role in the processes of ethical deliberation; therefore it can be regarded as an extremely useful tool to justify public decision-making. In order to support this thesis I examine Nussbaum’s proposal of perceptive equilibrium as a method to conduct the public deliberation processes which integrates the emotions in its structure. Finally, I analyse one of the possible applications of the proposed method: introducing narrative texts, both historical and fictional, in the curricula as a method for ethical deliberation.
Here and now: perceptions of Indian Ocean islanders on the climate change and migration nexus
2017
Empirical studies exploring the links between climate change and migration are increasing. Often, perceptions are not fully explored from the people most affected by the climate change and migration nexus. This article contributes to filling this gap by eliciting and analyzing perceptions regarding climate change and migration from an understudied population labelled as being amongst those most immediately and directly affected by climate change: Indian Ocean islanders. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews were conducted in two case study communities in Maldives (Kaafu Guraidhoo with 17 interviews and Raa Dhuvafaaru with 18 interviews) and two case study communities in Lakshadweep, India …
