The reaction of silver perchlorate with [PhI 2 SnCH 2 ([16]crown-5)] (1) and [I 3 SnCH 2 ([16]crown-5)] (2) gave the organotin(IV)-substituted crown ether complexes [PhSnCH 2 ([16]crown-5)][ClO 4 ] 2 (3) and [HOSnCH 2 ([16]crown-5)][Y] 2 (4: Y= ClO 4 , 5: Y=CF3 S 03 ) , respectively. All compounds have been isolated as air-stable materials and characterised by 1 H, 13 C, 119 Sn and 119 Sn MAS (5) NMR spectroscopy, ESIMS spectrometry, elemental analysis and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Abstract Perchlorate and hexafluorophosphate salts of monomeric [Cu(terpy)(OOCH)(OH2)]+ and dimeric [Cu(terpy)(OOCR)]22+ cations (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, R = CH3 or C2H5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, electronic and ESR spectra, and analytical data. Spectroscopic results indicate a five-coordinate, close-to-square pyramidal geometry around the copper(II) ion. The half-field absorption in the ΔMs = 2 region of powdered X-band ESR spectra has been observed for the dimeric species. Polymerization of styrene was found not to take place with 4-phenylazobenzoyl perchlorate in benzene solution. 4-Biphenylcarbonyl perchlorate, however, initiates styrene polymerization under the same conditions leading to a product not containing acyl groups as indicated by UV spectroscopic analysis. 4-Phenylazobenzoyl, 2-naphthoyl, and 9,10-dioxo-2-anthracenecarbonyl perchlorate (6b, 7b, and 8b), prepared form silver perchlorate and the corresponding acyl chlorides 6a, 7a, and 8a in styrene, were found to initiate the polymerization of styrene under anhydrous conditions at −25°C in the dark. Acyl perchlorates generated in styrene without a solvent by acyl chlorides and silver perchlorate gave polystyrenes with covalently bonded acyl groups. In order to gain secured values their number average relative molecular masses (Mn) were determined by different methods. The polystyrenes could be hydrogenated with hydrogen and Raney nickel at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure without attacking the phenolic nuclei. In addition IR data and a UV absorption at 294 nm of the polystyrenes revealed the presence of and olefinic bond, which was also found in a polystyrene obtained by polymerisation with perchloric acid. Publisher Summary This chapter describes a method to accurately measure glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) in the blood of humans and animals that perform physical exercise. With this method, it is possible to assess the oxidative stress associated with physical exercise by measuring changes in the blood GSH/GSSG ratio. Glutathione measurement is performed by a modification of the glutathione S -transferase method of Brigelius et al. This is based on the conjugation of chlorodinitrobenzene with GSH catalyzed by glutathione S -transferase. Entrapment of DNA and of synthetic model polynucleotides in reverse micelles, where the water activity can easily be modulated, may be a useful way of assessing the influence of water on DNA characteristics; it may also offer useful ideas on the problem of how the giant DNA molecule can be confined in the limited space of cell nuclei. Four compounds with the formula [M2(dmphen)4(μ-C2O4)](ClO4)2·2dmso [M = Fe (1), Co (2) and Zn (4); dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline] and [Ni2(dmphen)4(μ-C2O4)]3[NbO(C2O4)3]2·16H2O (3) have been synthesized using the tris(oxalato)oxoniobate(V) complex anion as the oxalate source, and their structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Abstract The tetranuclear copper(II) complex of formula [Cu2(dmg)(Hdmg)(terpy)]2(ClO4)2 (1) (H2dmg = dimethylglyoxime and terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P(−1), with a = 14.382(3), b = 13.728(3), c = 8.979(2) A, α = 96.99(2), β = 111.85(2), γ = 111.22(3)°, V = 1465.0(9) A3, Z = 1, Dc = 1.607 g cm−3, Mr = 1418.0, F(000) = 719, λ(Mo Kα) = 0.71073 A, μ(Mo Kα) = 16.61 cm−1 and T = 298 K.
