The Theories of Helmholtz in the Work of Varèse

2011

In 1905 Varese discovered the French edition of Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen als physiologische Grundlage fur die Theorie der Musik [On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music] of Hermann von Helmholtz (1863), the explicit intention of which was to bring together the common frontiers of science and music. This discovery was a revelation for the 22-year-old composer that went on to condition his whole philosophy of sound. The experiences of the German scientist, achieved with the aid of sirens, resonators or tuning forks, caught the imagination of the young composer. This article investigates the importance of the theories of Helmholtz for the Varesian ae…

Organizational performance focused on users' quality of life: The role of service climate and "contribution-to-others" wellbeing beliefs.

2017

The investigation of organizational factors as precursors of the quality of life (QoL) of service users in organizations for individuals with intellectual disability has been relatively neglected. With this in mind, this study tests the mediation of service climate between employee's "contribution-to-others" wellbeing beliefs (COWBs) and organizational performance focused on the QoL of individuals with intellectual disability. A total of 104 organizations participated in the study. Data were collected from 885 employees and 809 family members of individuals with intellectual disability. The results of the multilevel mediation model supported the hypotheses. When employees believe that their …

Docencia presencial, on-line o mixta: ¿Qué herramientas pedagógicas son mejor valoradas por el alumnado?

2020

[EN] The implementation of the Bologna process in Spanish universities, which has been active for a decade as of this academic year, facilitated the implementation of multiple teaching methodologies where numerous Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and e-learning tools have had a place. Thus, at this point, an analysis ought to be carried out of the impact that their use may have had on the teaching-learning process for the students. The results from such study will allow selecting the tools that could potentially optimize the results of the aforementioned process. Once the best ones among them have been identified, and taking into account their face-to-face or online nature,…

Altered neural responses to social fairness in bipolar disorder

2020

Highlights • Bipolar disorder is characterized by impaired processing of social fairness. • BD patients exhibit increased rejection of moderate unfairness in Ultimatum Game. • BD patients display decreased response to moderate unfairness in anterior insula. • BD patients deactivate posterior and middle insula in response to unfairness. • Trait impulsivity positively correlated with deactivations in posterior insula.

Auditory distance perception in an acoustic pipe

2008

In a study of auditory distance perception, we investigated the effects of exaggeration the acoustic cue of reverberation where the intensity of sound did not vary noticeably. The set of stimuli was obtained by moving a sound source inside a 10.2-m long pipe having a 0.3-m diameter. Twelve subjects were asked to listen to a speech sound while keeping their head inside the pipe and then to estimate the egocentric distance from the sound source using a magnitude production procedure. The procedure was repeated eighteen times using six different positions of the sound source. Results show that the point at which perceived distance equals physical distance is located approximately 3.5 m away fr…

Music lessons improve auditory perceptual and cognitive performance in deaf children

2014

Despite advanced technologies in auditory rehabilitation of profound deafness, deaf children often exhibit delayed cognitive and linguistic development and auditory training remains a crucial element of their education. In the present cross-sectional study, we assess whether music would be a relevant tool for deaf children rehabilitation. In normal-hearing children, music lessons have been shown to improve cognitive and linguistic-related abilities, such as phonetic discrimination and reading. We compared auditory perception, auditory cognition, and phonetic discrimination between 14 profoundly deaf children who completed weekly music lessons for a period of 1.5 to 4 years and 14 deaf child…

Authentication of phacelia honeys (Phacelia tanacetifolia) based on a combination of HPLC and HPTLC analyses as well as spectrophotometric measuremen…

2019

Abstract The growing interest in the quality of honey affects customer preferences and consumption trends. Generally, monofloral honeys are more expensive than multifloral honeys, and the price strictly depends on its botanical origin. The increasing popularity of a variety of monofloral brands has led to the increasing number of adulterations and therefore for the need to develop new analytical methods for assessing honey authenticity. The purpose of the present study was to develop a method for the authentication of phacelia honeys on the basis of HPLC and HPTLC analyses and spectrophotometry. The results obtained by spectrophotometric analysis indicated significant differences only betwe…

Effects of emotional intelligence on entrepreneurial intention and self-efficacy

2014

Analysis of pesticides in fruits by pressurized liquid extraction and liquid chromatography-ion trap-triple stage mass spectrometry.

2005

A multi-residue method using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography-quadrupole ion trap-triple stage mass spectrometry (LC-IT-MS(3)) has been developed for determining trace levels of pesticides in fruits. The selected pesticides can be distinguished in: benzimidazoles and azoles, organophosphorus, carbamates, neonicotinoids, and acaricides. PLE has been optimized to extract these pesticide residues from oranges and peaches by studying the effect of experimental variables on PLE efficiency. Samples were extracted at high temperature and pressure (75 degrees C and 1500psi) using ethyl acetate as extraction solvent and acidic alumina as drying agent. The recoveries obta…
