Combined effects of thermal conditions and food availability on thermal tolerance of the marine bivalve, Perna viridis

2018

Abstract Organisms can mitigate the effects of long term variation in environmental conditions through acclimation, which involves changes in various physiological responses. To elucidate the possible effects of temperature and food concentrations on acclimation capacity, physiological responses of the mussel, Perna viridis, were measured after individuals were held for six weeks under varying temperatures and food availability. Warm-acclimated mussels experiencing higher food levels had significantly greater upper thermal limits than those maintained on lower food levels. In contrast, the upper thermal limits of cold-acclimated mussels were not affected by food levels. For warm-acclimated …

Prognostic Impact of Hyponatremia and Hypernatremia in COVID-19 Pneumonia. A HOPE-COVID-19 (Health Outcome Predictive Evaluation for COVID-19) Regist…

2020

Dysnatremia is associated with increased mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. SARS-COV2 (Severe-acute-respiratory syndrome caused by Coronavirus-type 2) pneumonia can be fatal. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether admittance dysnatremia is associated with mortality, sepsis, or intensive therapy (IT) in patients hospitalized with SARS-COV2 pneumonia. This is a retrospective study of the HOPE-COVID-19 registry, with data collected from January 1th through April 31th, 2020. We selected all hospitalized adult patients with RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-COV2 pneumonia and a registered admission serum sodium level (SNa). Patients were classified as hyponatremic (SNa <…

Quantitative studies of the secretion of complement component C3 by resident, elicited and activated macrophages. Comparison with C2, C4 and lysosoma…

1982

To quantitate the secretion of complement component C3 by guinea pig peritoneal macrophages an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed. C3 secretion was studied in resident, elicited and activated macrophages and compared with release of hemolytically active C2 and C4, as well as the lysosomal enzyme β-D-2-acetamido-2-deoxyglucosidase. Resident macrophages secreted about 6 ng C3/106 cells/h into culture supernatants over a period of 12 h. Corynebacterium parvum-activated cells were found to secrete 3 times that amount at nearly constant rates. There was a stepwise increase in secretion of functional C2 and C4 when comparing resident, elicited and activated macrophages; secretion was…

The New Media and Heterotopic Technologies in the Philippines

2008

Information overload is perhaps the most common frustration of our age. It strikes everyone: young and old, educated and uneducated, rich and poor, first world and third world. Human communication has taken on the qualities of the supernatural. Indeed it has surpassed it! Zeus could only rely on Mercury’s speed to convey his commands; presently electronic messages zip around the globe and the universe at the speed of light. No wonder that new communication technologies often evoke notions of the supernatural. This paper deals with some of the unexpected effects of the new communication technologies, in particular for mobile phones. While the mobile has become the icon of connectedness, it a…
