On the resolution of the lek paradox.

Directional female mate choice is expected to deplete additive genetic variation in male traits. This should preclude such trait-based choice from resulting in genetic benefits to offspring, and yet genetic benefits are the explanation for the choice. This evolutionary conundrum is known as the lek paradox. Newly proposed resolutions to this paradox aim to unravel mechanisms that contribute to the persistence of genetic variance in traits under directional female mate choice.

The ability to digest milk during adulthood (lactase persistence) is a genetically determined trait present only in humans. Its origin and diffusion are correlated with the development of pastoralism and the consumption of fresh milk. Inverse symmetry breaking and the exact renormalization group

We discuss the question of inverse symmetry breaking at non-zero temperature using the exact renormalization group. We study a two-scalar theory and concentrate on the nature of the phase transition during which the symmetry is broken. We also examine the persistence of symmetry breaking at temperatures higher than the critical one.

Different statistical methods are used to determine whether there has been a general trend whereby the richest regions have maintained their position over time or whether, on the contrary, any relevant changes can be seen in the positions occupied by the various regions in terms of income levels per capita. Significance and relevance of serum preS1 antigen detection in wild-type and variant hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections

These studies assessed whether the serum expression of preS1 antigen could be a useful HBV marker for monitoring the progress of antiviral therapy in the treatment of chronic active hepatitis B (CAH-B) virus infections. Our findings indicate that: 1) the rearrangements we observed in the preS region of mutated HBV DNA molecules during chronic infection did not effect the preS1 sequence (21–47) critical for HBV infectivity; 2) the persistence or even the rebound of preS1 antigen expression during follow-up in responders to antiviral therapy may indicate virus persistence, suggesting the possibility of relapse through wild-type HBV or the emergence of HBV variants following the immunoeliminat…
Price Stability and Inflation Persistence During the International Gold Standard: The Scandinavian Case

In the 1870s the three Scandinavian countries Denmark, Norway and Sweden formed the Scandinavian Currency Union. Both the adoption of gold and the monetary union were supposed to lead to price stability in and between these countries. By drawing on new indices of consumer prices the present paper offers an examination of inflation dynamics, defined as price stability and inflation persistence, in the periphery of Scandinavia during the heyday of the international gold standard.
