User Perspective on the Adoption of Mobile Augmented Reality Based Applications
2013
Mobile augmented reality (AR) based applications enable digital content to be connected with the user’s real world surroundings. To begin with, the current types of consumer-level applications are introduced. The main purpose of the chapter is to study the adoption and perceived strengths and weaknesses of mobile AR-based applications by analyzing quantitative and qualitative responses of 90 actual users. Diffusion of innovations (DOI) theory is adopted with structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the intention to use such applications. Perceived strengths and weaknesses, mentioned by the users, are analyzed by qualitative coding. Results indicate that the constructs of diffusion …
What effect can manual therapy have on a patient's pain experience?
2015
Manual therapy (MT) is a passive, skilled movement applied by clinicians that directly or indirectly targets a variety of anatomical structures or systems, which is utilized with the intent to create beneficial changes in some aspect of the patient pain experience. Collectively, the process of MT is grounded on clinical reasoning to enhance patient management for musculoskeletal pain by influencing factors from a multidimensional perspective that have potential to positively impact clinical outcomes. The influence of biomechanical, neurophysiological, psychological and nonspecific patient factors as treatment mediators and/or moderators provides additional information related to the proces…
Rereadings: Highlighting the Gender Perspective Through Hypermedia
2020
In this text, we present the contributions of the Spain-based project Rereadings. Museum Itineraries from a Gender Perspective, which aims to present to the public the collections of 11 Valencian museums, of various kinds and under different types of ownership, from a gender and queer perspective. Rereadings uses virtual itineraries and QR codes to contribute to the study of gender. Thus, technology is used as a basis for information dissemination, analysis, and debate. The struggle against androcentrism and heteropatriarchy has generated a greater inclusion of women, other genders, and diverse sexualities in traditional museum discourse. New technologies function as one of the fundamental …
2019
Post-activation potentiation (PAP) is a well-described phenomenon with a short half-life (~28 s) that enhances muscle force production at submaximal levels of calcium saturation (i.e., submaximal levels of muscle activation). It has been largely explained by an increased myosin light chain phosphorylation occurring in type II muscle fibers, and its effects have been quantified in humans by measuring muscle twitch force responses to a bout of muscular activity. However, enhancements in (sometimes maximal) voluntary force production detected several minutes after high-intensity muscle contractions are also observed, which are also most prominent in muscles with a high proportion of type II fi…
Untangling the roles of low skill and education in predicting youth NEET statuses: negative signalling effects in comparative perspective
2021
International audience; Education determines life chances across the globe, but human capital and skill formation offer context-specific advantages in the labour market during the transition from school to work. Our study focuses specifically on the varying effects of low skill on youth ‘not in employment, education or training’ (NEET) statuses via educational attainments. Using Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) data, we estimate the extent to which country-specific relative low skill levels affect young people’s probability of reporting long-term NEET statuses across contexts. We find that low skill and education have differing effects on the probabil…
Narrative and Place
2017
The purpose of this chapter is to explore possible intersections between place and narrative, questioning an understanding that simply associates place with space and narrative with time and infers their separation from that. After introducing two directions from which the problem can be addressed, namely the role of place for the phenomena analyzed in terms of narrative, on the one hand, and the role of narrative for the understanding of place, on the other, the text pursues the first perspective and explores the relation between place and narrative with regard to the theory of the self, ethics, the theory of action and history. The concluding section briefly discusses the way narrative in…
Progreso, complejidad y evolución
2020
The influence of gender role on negotiation development and outcome
2007
PurposeThe main aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of gender differences on negotiation behaviour choice and, consequently, on its outcome. The analysis undertaken is first defined by distinguishing between sex and gender role. It gender role and not biological sex the factor that can have a direct impact on behaviour. With a contextual perspective, we have chosen the negotiation processes of strategic alliances as our contextual framework of analysis.Design/methodology/approachThe paper adopts a qualitative methodology, particularly case study analysis.FindingsA higher degree of complexity increases the perception of ambiguity, which then leads to the influence of gender in the neg…
On Participating in Communities of Practice
2004
This chapter examines the social practices of three classroom communities where pedagogy in the learning of science draws on the socio-cultural perspective. The pedagogical framework for science education, defined in this study as a participatory approach, views learning as a collective process of meaning-making situated in cultural contexts (e.g. Cole, 1996; Sfard, 1998; Wells; 1999). There are three focuses of interest, namely, the nature of role negotiation between the members of the learning community, the application of cultural tools in collective activity, and the processes of making meaning for a scientific phenomenon. The social practices of the science classroom communities are ap…
