HSP60 and CpG-DNA-oligonucleotides differentially regulate LPS-tolerance of hepatic Kupffer cells

Background/aims: Hepatic Kupffer cells (KC) are major regulators of the immune response to gut-derived bacterial products; uncontrolled activation of KC by bacterial components is of pathogenic relevance in alcoholic hepatitis and septic shock. Methods: We examined the role of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), bacterial and autologous HSP60 and bacterial DNA, which are recognized by innate Toll-like receptors, during activation of murine KC. Chaoskampf in the orthodox baptism ritual

The present article analyses the occurrence of the Chaoskampf motif in the Orthodox Baptism ritual and its biblical and Near-Eastern backgrounds. Such statements are direct references to Old and New Testament texts in which water has negative connotations, being associated with hostile or chaotic aspects of existence. In the baptismal interpretation of the biblical motif, sea, depths and dragons are figurative names for demons. The liturgical reinterpretation of these biblical references is the preamble of the baptismal exorcisms. Coagulation and fibrosis in chronic liver disease.

In the hepatic tissue repair mechanism, hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are recruited at the site of injury and their changes reflect paracrine stimulation by all neighbouring cell types, including sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatocytes, platelets and leucocytes. Thrombin converts circulating fibrinogen to fibrin, promotes platelet aggregation, is a potent activator of endothelial cells, acts as a chemoattractant for inflammatory cells and is a mitogen and chemoattractant for fibroblasts and vascular smooth muscle cells. Integrability Conditions: Recent Results in the Theory of Integrable Models

This paper reports various results achieved recently in the theory of integrable models. These are summarised in the Fig.1! Exponential Transients in Continuous-Time Symmetric Hopfield Nets

We establish a fundamental result in the theory of continuous-time neural computation, by showing that so called continuous-time symmetric Hopfield nets, whose asymptotic convergence is always guaranteed by the existence of a Liapunov function may, in the worst case, possess a transient period that is exponential in the network size. Two New Glycosides from Astragalus caprinus

A new glycoside of flavonol (1) and a new glycoside of a cycloartane-type triterpene (2) were isolated from the leaves and the roots of Astragalus caprinus, respectively. Their structures were elucidated in turn by spectroscopic data interpretation as 3-O-[[beta-D-xylopyranosyl(1-->3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-->6)][beta-D-apiofuranosyl(1-->2)]]-beta-D-galactopyranosyl kaempferol (1) and 3-O-(beta-D-xylopyranosyl)-24-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-20,25-epoxycycloartane-3beta,6alpha,16beta,24alpha-tetrol (2).
