Harnessing Fluorescence versus Phosphorescence Ratio via Ancillary Ligand Fine-Tuned MLCT Contribution

2016

A series of gold(I) alkynyl-diphosphine complexes (XC6H4C2Au)PPh2—spacer—PPh2(AuC2C6H4X); spacer = —C2(C6H4)nC2— (A1, n = 2, X = CF3; A2, n = 2, X = OMe; A3, n = 3, X = CF3; A4, n = 3, X = OMe), —(C6H4)n— (B5, n = 3, X = OMe; B6, n = 4, X = OMe) were prepared, and their photophysical properties were investigated. The luminescence behavior of the titled compounds is dominated by the diphosphine spacer, which serves as an emitting ππ* chromophore. The complexes exhibit dual emission, comprising low and high energy bands of triplet (phosphorescence) and singlet (fluorescence) origins, respectively. The electron-donating characteristics of ancillary groups X significantly affect the LLCT/MLCT c…

Substitution of the laser borane anti-B18H22 with pyridine: a structural and photophysical study of some unusually structured macropolyhedral boron h…

2018

Reaction of anti-B18H221 with pyridine in neutral solvents gives sparingly soluble B16H18-3',8'-Py23a as the major product (ca. 53%) and B18H20-6',9'-Py22 (ca. 15%) as the minor product, with small quantities of B18H20-8'-Py 4 (ca. 1%) also being formed. The three new compounds 2, 3a and 4 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and by multinuclear multiple-resonance NMR spectroscopy. Compound 2 is of ten-vertex nido:ten-vertex arachno two-atoms-in-common architecture, long postulated for a species with borons-only cluster constitution, but previously elusive. Compound 3a is of unprecedented ten-vertex nido:eight-vertex arachno two-atoms-in-common architecture. The si…

Effect of Iodination on the Photophysics of the Laser Borane anti-B18H22: Generation of Efficient Photosensitizers of Oxygen

2019

Treatment of the laser borane anti-B18H22 (compound 1) with iodine in ethanol gives the monoiodinated derivative 7-I-anti-B18H21 (compound 2) in 67% yield, or, by reaction with iodine or ICl in the presence of AlCl3 in dichloromethane, the diiodinated derivative 4,4'-I2-anti-B18H20 (compound 3) in 85% yield. On excitation with 360 nm light, both compounds 2 and 3 give strong green phosphorescent emissions (λmax = 525 nm, ΦL = 0.41 and λmax = 545 nm, ΦL = 0.71 respectively) that are quenched by dioxygen to produce O2(1Δg) singlet oxygen with quantum yields of ΦΔ = 0.52 and 0.36 respectively. Similarly strong emissions can be stimulated via the nonlinear process of two-photon absorption when …

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Efficient Singlet Oxygen Production by Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes with Aromatic Alkynyl Ligands

2020

The synthesis of five novel cyclometalated platinum(II) compounds containing five different alkynyl-chromophores was achieved by the reaction of the previously synthesized Pt–Cl cyclometalated compound (1) with the corresponding RC≡CH by a Sonogashira reaction. It was observed that the spectral and photophysical characteristics of the cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes (Pt–Ar) are essentially associated with the platinum-cyclometalated unit. Room-temperature emission of the Pt–Ar complexes was attributed to phosphorescence in agreement with DFT calculations. Broad nanosecond (ns)-transient absorption spectra were observed with decays approximately identical to those obtained from the emi…

Photophysical behavior of 3-methylquinoline and 3-bromoquinoline

1992

Abstract The phosphorescence emission and excitation spectra and their polarizations have been studied for 3-methylquinoline and 3-bromoquinoline in methylcyclohexane and ethanol glasses at 77 K. From the results obtained in 3-methylquinoline (τp = 1.30 s in ethanol, τp = 1.05 s in methylcyclohexane and the out-of-plane polarization) it is concluded that the emission originates from a triplet state of 3ππ∗ character. In 3-bromoquinoline, the phosphorescence lifetimes (ca. 8 ms in a non-polar solvent and 15 ms in a polar solvent) and the negative degree of polarization indicate an emitting state of ππ∗ character that is strongly coupled to a higher-lying triplet state of the nπ∗ type. The mo…

[Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]+ emitters containing a naphthalene unit within a linker between the two cyclometallating ligands

2016

The synthesis of four cyclometallated [Ir(C^N) 2 (N^N)][PF 6 ] compounds in which N^N is a substituted 2,2’- -bipyridine (bpy) ligand and the naphthyl-centred ligand 2,7-bis(2-(2-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)phenoxy)ethoxy) ethoxy)naphthalene provides the two cyclometallating C^N units is reported. The iridium( III ) complexes have been characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopies, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis, and their electrochemical and photophysical properties are described. Comparisons are made with a model [Ir(ppy) 2 (N^N)][PF 6 ] compound (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine). The complexes containing the naphthyl-unit exhibit similar absorption spectra and excitation at 280 nm leads to an …

On the Low-Lying Excited States ofsym-Triazine-Based Herbicides

2005

We report a joint computational and luminescence study on the low-lying excited states of sym-triazines, namely, 1,3,5-triazine (1) and the ubiquitous herbicides atrazine [6-chloro-N2-ethyl-N4-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (2)] and ametryn [6-methylthio-N2-ethyl-N4-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (3)]. Geometrical structures, energetics, and transition and state properties of I and 2 were computed at the TD-DFT, CASSCF, and CASPT2 levels of theory. The fluorescence and phosphorescence emission spectra, lifetimes, and fluorescence quantum yields were measured for the three compounds, and from these, the energies of the lowest excited states and their corresponding radiative rates…

Aequorin-expressing yeast emits light under electric control

2011

In this study, we show the use of direct external electrical stimulation of a jellyfish luminescent calcium-activated protein, aequorin, expressed in a transgenic yeast strain. Yeast cultures were electrically stimulated through two electrodes coupled to a standard power generator. Even low (1.5. V) electric pulses triggered a rapid light peak and serial light pulses were obtained after electric pulses were applied periodically, suggesting that the system is re-enacted after a short refraction time. These results open up a new scenario, in the very interphase between synthetic biology and cybernetics, in which complex cellular behavior might be subjected to electrical control.

Supramolecular Construction of Cyanide-Bridged Re I Diimine Multichromophores

2019

The reactions of labile [Re(diimine)(CO)3(H2O)]+ precursors (diimine = 2,2′-bipyridine, bpy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) with dicyanoargentate anion produce the dirhenium cyanide-bridged compounds [{Re(diimine)(CO)3}2CN)]+ (1 and 2). Substitution of the axial carbonyl ligands in 2 for triphenylphosphine gives the derivative [{Re(phen)(CO)2(PPh3)}2CN]+ (3), while the employment of a neutral metalloligand [Au(PPh3)(CN)] affords heterobimetallic complex [{Re(phen)(CO)3}NCAu(PPh3)]+ (4). Furthermore, the utilization of [Au(CN)2]−, [Pt(CN)4]2–, and [Fe(CN)6]4–/3– cyanometallates leads to the higher nuclearity aggregates [{Re(diimine)(CO)3NC}xM]m+ (M = Au, x = 2, 5 and 6; Pt, x = 4, 7 and 8; Fe, x…

p–n Metallophosphor based on cationic iridium(iii) complex for solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells

2011

An ionic transition-metal complex for improved charge transporting properties was designed, containing both n-type dimesitylboryl (BMes2) and p-type carbazole groups. The complex, [Ir(Bpq)2(CzbpyCz)]PF6 (1) (Bpq = 2-[4-(dimesitylboryl)phenyl] quinoline, CzbpyCz = 5,5′-bis(9-hexyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine) and its equivalent in which the BMes2 groups were substituted with carbazole moieties were evaluated on the photoluminescence and excited state properties in detail. According to the photophysical and electrochemical properties, we concluded that the BMes2 groups can increase the conjugation length of the cyclometalated C^N ligands and greatly enhance the phosphorescence efficienc…
