Nanostructured CdO thin films for water treatments
2016
Abstract CdO was the very first transparent conducting metal oxide discovered. CdO thin films show electrical and optical properties of interest as photosensitive anode materials for photochemical cells, phototransistors, photodiodes, window electrodes in liquid crystal displays, IR detectors, antireflection coatings, gas sensors and in other solar energy applications. In the present study we report on the spectroscopic, microscopic, electrical and photo-catalytic properties of CdO thin films prepared by a metal organic chemical vapor method. The degenerate semiconducting CdO thin films are useful as photocatalysts for water treatments.
Hybrid paper–TiO2 coupled with a Cu2O heterojunction: an efficient photocatalyst under sun-light irradiation
2016
Hybrid paper-TiO2, paper-Cu2O-TiO2 and paper-TiO2-Cu2O photocatalysts were prepared via a non-hydrolytic sol-gel process followed by mild hydrothermal treatment to generate the TiO2 layer, and a reduction process to form the Cu2O nanoparticles. The hybrid photocatalysts have been characterized by Raman, TGA, FE-SEM, UV-Vis and XPS. The immobilized TiO2 was found to form a homogeneous thin layer composed of nanoparticles with a size smaller than 10 nm. The Cu2O nanoparticles with sizes of 30-100 nm were generated either on the top of the TiO2 layer or by reduction of Cu2+ ions. All the prepared hybrid catalysts showed efficient photocatalytic properties for the degradation of toluidine when …
Controlled hydrodynamic conditions on the formation of iron oxide nanostructures synthesized by electrochemical anodization: Effect of the electrode …
2017
[EN] Iron oxide nanostructures are of particular interest because they can be used as photocatalysts in water splitting due to their advantageous properties. Electrochemical anodization is one of the best techniques to synthesize nanostructures directly on the metal substrate (direct back contact). In the present study, a novel methodology consisting of the anodization of iron under hydrodynamic conditions is carried out in order to obtain mainly hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanostructures to be used as photocatalysts for photoelectrochemical water splitting applications. Different rotation speeds were studied with the aim of evaluating the obtained nanostructures and determining the most attract…

Photoelectrochemical properties of doped lanthanum orthoferrites
2013
Abstract LaFeO 3 powders doped with Sr (20 mol%) and Cu (0-10-20 mol%) were prepared by citrate auto-combustion synthesis and investigated in terms of crystal structure, morphology, surface area and optical properties. All powders showed photocurrent response in the form of a pasted and annealed electrode and as slurry electrode; the highest value was obtained for undoped orthoferrite calcined at 600 °C. Their physical–chemical properties were related to photoelectrochemical behaviour. The position of the quasi-Fermi level of electrons for all the photocatalysts calcined in the range 600–980 °C is about the same within experimental error (between −0.62 and −0.67 V with respect to Ag/AgCl re…
Elemental Bromine Production by TiO2 Photocatalysis and/or Ozonation
2016
Significant production of elemental bromine (Br2 ) was observed for the first time when treating bromide containing solutions at acidic pH, with TiO2 photocatalyst, ozone, or a combination thereof. Br2 selectivities up to approximately 85 % were obtained and the corresponding bromine mass balance values satisfied. The process is general and may be applied at a laboratory scale for green bromination reactions, or industrially as a cheap, safe, and environmentally sustainable alternative to the currently applied bromine production methods.
TiO2/Ag2O immobilized on cellulose paper: A new floating system for enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities
2021
Paper-TiO2-Ag2O floating photocatalysts were produced under mild condition and their photocatalytic activity for the degradation of aromatic amine under sunlight stimulant was investigated. Characterizations by Raman, XRD, XPS, DRS and PL confirmed the presence of TiO2 and Ag2O, and the morphology of the appended TiO2/Ag2O layer was probed by FE-SEM. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples was investigated by the degradation of aniline (AN) in water under simulated sun-light illumination and constrained conditions, i.e. non-stirring and non-oxygenation. The presence of Ag2O combined with TiO2 was shown to improve the resistance of paper to bacteria attack, thus increasing the du…
Codeposition of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles sandwiched between g-C3N4 and TiO2 nanosheets: Structure, characterization and high photocatalytic activity fo…
2019
Novel ternary nanocomposite photocatalysts based on g-C3N4 /Fe3O4 /TiO2 nanosheet were synthesized using simple solid combustion, hydrothermal and wetness impregnation methods. The g-C3N4 nanosheet (2D)/ Fe3O4 /TiO2 nanosheet (2D) triad-interface nanocomposite arranged in the form of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle was sandwiched and effectively dispersed on the surface between g-C3N4 and TiO2 nanosheets. The synthesized composites were characterized by some specific techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), specific su…
Highly robust and selective system for water pollutants removal: How to transform a traditional photocatalyst into a highly robust and selective syst…
2019
Highly porous monolithic aerogels based on ZnO photocatalyst and syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) were obtained by supercritical CO2 treatment of ZnO/s-PS gels. The prepared aerogels were characterized and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated using phenol and toluene as water pollutant models. The s-PS nanoporous crystalline phase, able to absorb pollutant molecules, was proven to be necessary to ensure high photocatalytic efficiency as the aerogel acts not only as a support, but also as pollutant pre-concentrator. The reusability of ZnO/s-PS aerogels is also strong showing no decrease in photocatalytic activity after six consecutive degradation trials. Finally, the aerogel matrix pre…
Influence of the Substituent on Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Aromatic Compounds in Aqueous TiO2 Suspensions.
2006
Experimental results are reported showing that the photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic compounds containing an electron-donor group (EDG) gives rise mainly to ortho- and para-monohydroxy derivatives while in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group (EWG) all the monohydroxy derivatives are obtained.
