X-ray sources in NGC 752
2008
While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8x10^8yr) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. We analysed a ~140ks Chandraobservation of NGC 752 and a ~50ks XMM-Newtonobservation of the same cluster. We detected 262 X-ray sources in the Chandra data and 145 sources in the XMM-Newton observation. Around 90% of the catalogued cluster members within Chandra's field-of-view are detect…
Comparison of the Ultraviolet Light Filtering across Different Intraocular Lenses.
2018
SIGNIFICANCE We have analyzed the ultraviolet transmittance of some commercial intraocular lenses (IOLs). The results show differences of wavelength cutoff among them. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the ultraviolet light transmittance of different IOLs made out of acrylic hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and hydrophilic with hydrophobic surface materials from different manufacturers. METHODS The spectral transmission curves of eight monofocal IOLs with the same dioptric power of +20.0 diopters were measured using a PerkinElmer Lambda 35 ultraviolet/visible spectrometer. Two IOLs of each type were tested three times. The ultraviolet cutoff wavelength at 10% transmissio…
Scene-based spectral calibration assessment of high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers
2009
An accurate knowledge of the spectral calibration of imaging spectrometers is required for optimum data processing and interpretation. The scene-based spectral characterization of imaging spectrometers is frequently necessary to update or replace the pre-flight laboratory-based spectral characterization supplied by the data provider. An automatic method for the estimation of spectral calibration parameters (channel position and bandwidth) at atmospheric absorption regions from high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers (spectral sampling interval below 5 nm) is presented in this contribution. The method has been tested on two commercial instruments with spectral sampling intervals below…
C172S Substitution in the Chloroplast-encoded Large Subunit Affects Stability and Stress-induced Turnover of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate Carboxylase/Ox…
1999
Previous work has indicated that the turnover of chloroplast ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1. 39) may be controlled by the redox state of certain cysteine residues. To test this hypothesis, directed mutagenesis and chloroplast transformation were employed to create a C172S substitution in the Rubisco large subunit of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The C172S mutant strain was not substantially different from the wild type with respect to growth rate, and the purified mutant enzyme had a normal circular dichroism spectrum. However, the mutant enzyme was inactivated faster than the wild-type enzyme at 40 and 50 degrees C. In contrast, C172S mutant …
Remote estimation of blood pulse pressure via temporal tracking of reflected secondary speckles pattern
2011
We present a novel technique for remote noncontact blood pulse pressure measurement. It is based on tracking both temporal and amplitude changes of reflected secondary speckle produced in human skin when illuminated by a laser beam. The implemented technique extracts the difference between the systolic and the diastolic blood pressure. Experimental results are presented showing good agreement when compared with conventional measurement methods.
Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.
1999
The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea. Selenium contents of the analyzed infants' formulas ranged from 2.7 to 9.6 ng/ml and from 1.8 to 7.5 ng/ml for soy and milk-based in…
Simultaneous dissolution profiles of two drugs, sulfadiazine-trimethoprim and amitriptyline-perphenazine, in solid oral dosage forms by a FIA manifol…
2002
The simultaneous determination of two dissolution profiles with the aid of a Flow Injection Analysis assembly has been applied to: (a) sulfadiazine-trimethoprim in tablets and (b) amitriptyline-perphenazine in sugar coated pills. The selected combinations are drugs which have overlapping UV-vis spectra. The officially proposed procedure from the pharmacopoeias has been adapted for the FIA methodology and derivative spectrophotometry and zero crossing. Preliminary experiments on the suitability of the simultaneous determination of both drugs were performed. The empirical profiles were adjusted by regression analysis using different approaches. The 3-parameter plot method was finally selected…
Phenolic compounds of herbal infusions obtained from some species of the Lamiaceae family
2018
Abstract The present investigation was to estimate the total phenolic content and composition of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids in herbal infusions obtained from aerial parts of three Lamiaceae species (Dracocephalum moldavica, Ocimum americanum and Satureja hortensis). The total phenolic content of herbal infusions was determined using a spectrophotometric method, whereas the individual phenolics were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC method was developed and validated. The total phenolic content was measured by applying the Folin-Ciocalteu method with reference to gallic acid. Results were in the range from 29.39 to 65.38 mg estimated as gallic acid…
Interactions of benzodiazepines with human serum albumin. Circular dichroism studies.
1973
The circular dichroism spectra of 12 benzodiazepine derivatives studied in presence of human serum albumin are presented. Nearly all substances give biphasic extrinsic Cotton effects. At the CD maxima the molar ellipticities and the anisotropy factors are calculated. The influence of the chemical structure of the benzodiazepines on the induced Cotton effect is discussed. There is a linear correlation between the anisotropy factors and the logarithms of the partition coefficients of the substances. It is suggested that the phenyl ring of the benzodiazepine molecule is one of the essential groups for the binding of these substances to human serum albumin.
A multicommutated flow system for determination of bismuth in milk shakes by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry incorporating on-lin…
2004
Abstract A highly sensitive method was developed for determination of bismuth in milk shakes by multicommutation hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) based on off-line sonication for 10 min with aqua regia 8% (v/v) and on-line waste treatment. The instrumentation and chemistry variables were studied in order to provide the best performance. The limit of detection in the original samples, established for a probability level of 99.6% (k = 3), was 1.67 ng/g Bi. The method provides a fast alternative in control analysis with a sampling throughput of 72 h as compared with 31 h obtained by the classical continuous measurement. Additionally, multicommutation reduces waste g…
