Interface Effects in Ferroelectric Thin Films

1998

Dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics in sol-gel derived and pulsed laser deposited (PLD) lead zirconate titanate (PZT), La modified lead titanate (PLT) and zirconate titanate (PLZT) ferroelectric thin films are investigated focusing on maintenance of thin film ferroelectric (FE) properties in a variety of thin film-electrodesubstrate interfaces. Interferometric studies of piezoelectric response of the heterostructures were performed with respect to a DC electrical bias and AC measurement frequency. The asymmetry of piezoelectric coefficient (d33) hysteresis, diminished values of d33, frequency-displacement and spot size — deformation behaviour in the ferroelectric het…

Onthe repeatability of electromechanical impedance for monitoring of bonded joints

2015

The repeatability and sensitivity of the electromechanical impedance (EMI) method when employed for the structural health monitoring of bonded joints were investigated. A simple joint was assembled by bonding an aluminum strip to a square aluminum plate. Two rounds of experiments were performed. The first set aimed at verifying the repeatability of the method. The joint was monitored by using one piezoelectric sensor. The PZT was glued to the plate and never removed, whereas a poorly bonded joint was assembled and disassembled three times. For each case, the electromechanical signature was measured during the curing of the adhesive. After the three tests, the same joint was built with a dif…

Numerical analysis of a piezoelectric structural health monitoring system for composite flange-skin delamination detection

2013

Abstract In this paper, a piezoelectric based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system is proposed to detect skin/stiffener debonding and delamination cracks proper of laminated composite structures. The SHM system is analyzed by means of a boundary element code implemented in the framework of piezoelectricity. The multidomain technique, coupled with an interface spring model, is used to model laminated composite structures as well as the bonding between the host delaminated structure and the piezoelectric sensor. Static sensitivity analyses are firstly performed on a drop-ply delaminated structure in order to identify a suitable configuration for the sensor. Then, the dynamic electromecha…

Powder metallurgy processing and deformation characteristics of bulk multimodal nickel

2014

cited By 7; International audience; Spark plasma sintering was used to process bulk nickel samples from a blend of three powder types. The resulting multimodal microstructure was made of coarse (average size ∼ 135 μm) spherical microcrystalline entities (the core) surrounded by a fine-grained matrix (average grain size ∼ 1.5 μm) or a thick rim (the shell) distinguishable from the matrix. Tensile tests revealed yield strength of ∼ 470 MPa that was accompanied by limited ductility (∼ 2.8% plastic strain). Microstructure observation after testing showed debonding at interfaces between the matrix and the coarse entities, but in many instances, shallow dimples within the rim were observed indica…

Ferroelectric liquid-crystalline elastomers

1994

Oriented liquid-crystalline (LC) elastomers (polar monodomains, concerning the direction of polarisation) have been prepared from polar monodomains of ferroelectric LC-polysiloxanes by a radical photocrosslinking process. Attempts to perform ferroelectric switching lead in these soft elastomers to an elastic stress which prohibits—for low voltages—a complete reorientation of the polar axis (ferroelectric switching). A ferroelectric switching can, however, be observed for high voltages. The loop of hysteresis of this switching is asymmetric concerning the zero point of the driving voltage. Piezoelectric measurements show that these elastomers combine an elastic memory for one polar state wit…

Review of acoustic methods for space charge measurement

2015

In the last decade, due to the increased use of direct current, the space charge accumulation phenomenon has reached more interest. In this regard, several non-destructive measurement systems were used. In particular, for solid dielectrics, the acoustic methods have had greater success. This review presents a brief historical evolution of the Pulse Electro- Acoustic (PEA) method, describing the working operation, the thicknesses analyzed and the spatial resolution for the different configurations of the PEA cell. The Pressure Wave Propagation (PWP) method in both configurations Piezo-PWP and Laser Induced Pressure Pulse (LIPP) is also described.

Monte Carlo analysis of polymer translocation with deterministic and noisy electric fields

2012

AbstractPolymer translocation through the nanochannel is studied by means of a Monte Carlo approach, in the presence of a static or oscillating external electric voltage. The polymer is described as a chain molecule according to the two-dimensional “bond fluctuation model”. It moves through a piecewise linear channel, which mimics a nanopore in a biological membrane. The monomers of the chain interact with the walls of the channel, modelled as a reflecting barrier. We analyze the polymer dynamics, concentrating on the translocation time through the channel, when an external electric field is applied. By introducing a source of coloured noise, we analyze the effect of correlated random fluct…

Dual boundary element model of 3D piezoelectric smart structures

2017

In this paper, the application of the dual boundary element method (DBEM) in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) is explored. The model involves a 3D host structure, which is formulated by the DBEM in the Laplace domain, and 3D piezoelectric transducers, whose finite element model is derived from the electro-mechanical behaviour of piezoelectricity. The piezoelectric transducers and the host structure are coupled together via BEM variables. The practicability of this method in active sensing applications is demonstrated through comparisons with established FEM and parametric studies.

A new approach to assess gold nanoparticle uptake by mammalian cells: combining optical dark-field and transmission electron microscopy.

2012

Toxicological effects of nanoparticles are associated with their internalization into cells. Hence, there is a strong need for techniques revealing the interaction between particles and cells as well as quantifying the uptake at the same time. For that reason, herein optical dark-field microscopy is used in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy to investigate the uptake of gold nanoparticles into epithelial cells with respect to shape, stabilizing agent, and surface charge. The number of internalized particles is strongly dependent on the stabilizing agent, but not on the particle shape. A test of metabolic activity shows no direct correlation with the number of internalized par…
