Flashing light emitting diodes (LEDs) induce proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids and pigments in three microalgae
2020
As the periodic emission of light pulses by light emitting diodes (LEDs) is known to stimulate growth or induce high value biocompounds in microalgae, this flashing light regime was tested on growth and biochemical composition of the microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana, Koliella antarctica and Tetraselmis chui. At low flashing light frequencies (e.g., 5 and 50 Hz, Duty cycle = 0.05), a strain-dependent growth inhibition and an accumulation of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, chlorophyll or carotenoids (lutein, β-carotene, violaxanthin and neoxanthin) was observed. In addition, a 4-day application of low-frequency flashing light to concentrated cultures increased productivities of eicos…

Porous thin films obtained by DLI-CVD as mu-PEMFC catalysts to replace platinum
2016
This work is focused on development of growth protocols by direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition (DLI-CVD) of catalytic porous films which could be used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The aim of this work was to reduce or even proscribe platinum in catalysts having large specific surface area i.e. being very porous. Besides, the aim is also to use mainly low cost precursors.Cerium oxide, which is a material widely used as catalyst, has been chosen to partially substitute platinum. Porous CeO2 layers were obtained by the optimization of processing parameters such as deposition temperature or precursors flow rates. Controlled platinum doping of cerium oxide surfac…
A single primer pair gives a specific ortholog amplicon in a wide range of Cyanobacteria and plastid-bearing organisms: applicability in inventory of…
2010
The scarcity of universally applied molecular markers for algae has resulted in the development of multiple, independent and not easily comparable systems. The goal of this work is to increase the number of available molecular markers and to generate easily comparable systems. Thereby, we have designed a primer pair capable of amplifying a broad range of organisms: Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, Chlorarachniophyta, Cryptophyta, Euglenida, Glaucophyta, Rhodophyta, Stramenopiles and Streptophyta including plants. This primer pair can amplify a portion of the 23S rRNA gene with sufficient variability to identify reference material form collections across a broad range of taxa and perform phylogen…

Disfunzioni sessuali, farmaci antiepilettici e profilo ormonale sierico negli uomini affetti da epilessia
2012

The hairy elbows syndrome: clinical and neuroradiological findings.
2009
The hairy elbows syndrome (HES) is a rare congenital phenotype characterized by an abnormal increase in long hairs localized on the upper limbs extensor surfaces. This feature is often associated with short stature, facial asymmetry, dysmorphisms, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), and mental and speech delay. We report a case with hypertricosis cubiti associated with infantile spasms, behaviour disorders and cerebral hemisphere asymmetry. Although these findings have not been previously described we are uncertain whether they are unusual or underestimated. However, it is likely that these neurological findings are strongly interrelated leading to a more severe phenotype of the syndrom…
