Fungiform papillae density in patients with burning mouth syndrome and xerostomia

2011

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze fungiform papillae density in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and xerostomia. Study design: In this cross-sectional clinical study, sixty patients were included (20 with BMS, 20 with xerostomia and 20 healthy controls). The fungiform papillae density was analyzed over a small region on the anterior tip of the tongue with the aid of a digital camera. The number of papillae was measured in an area of 19 mm2. Results: The patients with BMS showed significantly higher fungiform papillae density than the patients with xerostomia; though no statistically significant differences were recorded versus the control group. In the BMS group, 65%…

Intestinal permeability and genetic determinants in patients, first-degree relatives, and controls in a high-incidence area of Crohn's disease in Sou…

2005

1. Am J Gastroenterol. 2005 Dec;100(12):2730-6. Intestinal permeability and genetic determinants in patients, first-degree relatives, and controls in a high-incidence area of Crohn's disease in Southern Italy. Fries W, Renda MC, Lo Presti MA, Raso A, Orlando A, Oliva L, Giofré MR, Maggio A, Mattaliano A, Macaluso A, Cottone M. Dipartimento di Medicina Interna e Terapia Medica, Università di Messina, Messina, Italy. OBJECTIVE: A defect of gastrointestinal barrier function is considered to represent an important step in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD) but the mechanisms leading to an increased intestinal permeability (IP) are poorly understood. Since IP is influenced by pro-inflammat…

Germline and somatic mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the MET proto-oncogene in papillary renal carcinomas.

1998

Hereditary papillary renal carcinoma (HPRC) is a recently recognized form of inherited kidney cancer characterized by a predisposition to develop multiple, bilateral papillary renal tumours. The pattern of inheritance of HPRC is consistent with autosomal dominant transmission with reduced penetrance. HPRC is histologically and genetically distinct from two other causes of inherited renal carcinoma, von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) and the chromosome translocation (3;8). Malignant papillary renal carcinomas are characterized by trisomy of chromosomes 7, 16 and 17, and in men, by loss of the Y chromosome. Inherited and sporadic clear cell renal carcinomas are characterized by inactivation of b…

Clinical evaluation of a modified marginal sulcular incision technique in endodontic surgery

2009

The authors evaluated periodontal parameters following apical surgery using a new marginal sulcular incision. In 65 cases, surgical access was achieved by means of a sulcular incision technique without the involvement of the adjacent periodontia and the interproximal papillae and in 33 cases by means of a submarginal trapezoidal technique. Periodontal parameters (probing pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment loss, and tooth mobility [periotest]) were recorded at baseline and after 6 months. Scar formation and the loss of papilla height were evaluated photographically. No significant changes in the attachment level and no loss of papilla height were found in either group. A s…

DOUBLE DEMONSTRATION OF ONCOGENIC HIGH RISK HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS DNA AND HPV-E7 PROTEIN IN ORAL CANCERS

2011

Oncogenic HPVs are necessarily involved in cervical cancer but their role in oral carcinogenesis is debated. To detect HPV in oral cancer, 38 cases of formalin fixed-paraffin embedded OSCC were studied by both DNA genotyping (MY09/11 L1 consensus primers in combination with GP5-GP6 primer pair followed by sequencing) and immunohistochemistry (monoclonal Abs against capsid protein and HPV-E7 protein, K1H8 DAKO and clone 8C9 INVITROGEN, respectively). HPV-16 tonsil cancer was used as positive control. The overall prevalence of HPV infection in OSCCs was 10.5%. Amplification of DNA samples showed single HPV DNA infection in 3 cases (HPV16; HPV53; HPV70) and double infection in one case of chee…

Prevalence of human papilloma virus infection in patients with male accessory gland infection

2015

The frequency of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the semen of patients with male accessory gland infection (MAGI) was evaluated. One hundred infertile patients with MAGI were classified into group A: patients with an inflammatory MAGI (n = 48) and group B: patients with a microbial form (n = 52). Healthy age-matched fertile men (34.0 ± 4.0 years) made up the control group (n = 20). Amplification of HPV DNA was carried out by HPV-HS Bio nested polymerase chain reaction for the detection of HPV DNA sequences within the L1 ORF. Ten patients in group A (20.8%) and 15 patients in group B (28.8%) had a HPV infection; two controls (10.0%) had HPV infection. Patients with MAGI had a signifi…

In vivo evaluation of periodontal microcirculatory changes associated with endodontic treatment.

2014

The purpose of this study was to investigate in vivo the gingival microcirculatory changes associated with endodontic treatment using the continuous wave of condensation technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty necrotic one canal roots of 20 cooperative patients of both sexes, aged between 20 and 43 years, were selected. All patients were examined by capillaroscopy before, immediately after endodontic treatment, and after 7 days. The last examination was carried out by the same operator, and repeated twice for each examined area: masticatory, buccal and labial mucosa corresponding to the endodontically treated root. All canals were prepared using a simultaneous technique with Ni-Ti files (M…

Positive inotropic response to 5-HT in human atrial but not in ventricular heart muscle

1992

The effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on force of contraction (FC), action potential (AP) and calcium current (ICa) were studied in human right atrial and left ventricular heart muscle. 5-HT exerted a concentration-dependent increase in FC in multicellular atrial preparations; the EC50 was approximately 3 x 10(-7) mol/l. Maximal increases in FC (252 +/- 58% of control values; mean +/- SEM, n = 6) were obtained at 5-HT 10(-5) mol/l. At this concentration, ICa was increased four- to sevenfold in enzymatically isolated atrial myocytes. In contrast, ventricular preparations did not respond to 5-HT; FC, AP and ICa remained unaffected. In the same preparations, FC was increased by isoprenalin…
