Supramolecular complexes formed by dimethoxypillar[5]arenes and imidazolium salts: A joint experimental and computational investigation

To gain more insights into the factors acting on the stability of complexes formed by pillar[5]arenes, we investigated the interaction of dimethoxypillar[5]arene with some 1-(n-alkyl)-3-(9-anthracenylmethyl)-imidazolium based organic salts. In particular, we used salts differing in not only the anion nature ([Cl−], [BF4−], [NTf2−] and [SbF6−]) and alkyl chain length (butyl, octyl and dodecylimidazolium derivatives), but also the presence of a hydrogenated or fluorinated tail (octyl and perfluorooctylimidazolium derivatives). A pillar[5]arene-containing cross-linked polymer: synthesis, characterization and adsorption of dihaloalkanes and n-alkylene dinitriles

A pillar[5]arene-containing cross-linked polymer was synthesized via Williamson reaction involving monohydroxy pillar[5]arene with chloromethylated polystyrene. Its adsorption behavior towards guests was investigated. It was found that the pillar[5]arene-containing polymer exhibited good adsorption capacities towards dihaloalkanes and dinitriles by host-guest complexation.

Small cyclic peptides have been employed to elucidate the performance of novel sorbents as stationary phases in capillary electrochromatography (CEC). In this paper chain length dependencies for ordinary liquid chromatographic sorbents are reported together with findings acquired on beads specifically designed to suit CEC. Speciation of the oxidation states of plutonium in aqueous solutions by UV/Vis spectroscopy, CE-ICP-MS and CE-RIMS

For the speciation of the plutonium oxidation states in aqueous solutions, the online coupling of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been developed. Depending on the radius/electrical charge ratio, the oxidation states III, IV, V, and VI of plutonium are separated by CE, based on the different migration times through the capillary and are detected by ICP-MS. The ability of several anionic compounds, including carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and other bile salts, to separate the C(10)-C(13) homologues and the corresponding 20 positional isomers of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) by capillary electrophoresis was studied. Up to 19 peaks and a shoulder were observed with a background electrolyte (BGE) containing 10 mM phosphate (pH 6.8), 30% acetonitrile and 40 mM SDS, and 18 peaks were obtained with a BGE containing 10 mM borate (pH 9), 40% ethanol and 40 mM palmitic acid (PA). The hydrolysis of the soybean Bowman-Birk inhibitor in the presence of catalytic amounts of bovine trypsin and the formation of the non-covalent enzyme-inhibitor complex with an equimolar amount of enzyme are monitored by means of high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE). The inhibitor is cleaved in the trypsin-reactive and more slowly in the chymotrypsin-reactive subdomain. HPCE proves itself as the only reliable analytical tool to monitor these reactions in clear contrast to classical electrophoretic, chromatographic and enzymatic methods. Characterization of the DNA-binding activity of the E1 and E2 proteins and the E1/E2 complex of human papillomavirus type 33.

The E1 and E2 proteins of papillomaviruses are essential for the initiation of viral DNA replication. We have purified the E2 protein of human papillomavirus type 33 (HPV-33) by immunoaffinity chromatography. The purified E2 protein bound with high affinity to all four consensus binding sites of HPV-33 (Kd approximately equal to 2 x 10(-10)M). A putative E2 binding site differing at one position in the second stem of the palindrome was not bound by E2. The E1 protein of HPV-33 purified by affinity chromatography using glutathione S-transferase as tag displayed specific DNA-binding activity in footprint analyses protecting HPV-33 nucleotides 7896 to 7909/1 to 18 from DNasel digestion. Bulk and interfacial properties in colloid-polymer mixtures

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a phase-separating colloid-polymer mixture are performed and compared to recent experiments. The approach is based on effective interaction potentials in which the central monomers of self-avoiding polymer chains are used as effective coordinates. By incorporating polymer nonideality together with soft colloid-polymer repulsion, the predicted binodal is in excellent agreement with recent experiments. In addition, the interfacial tension as well as the capillary length are in quantitative agreement with experimental results obtained at a number of points in the phase-coexistence region, without the use of any fit parameters.
