School grading and institutional contexts
2011
We study how the relationship between students' cognitive ability and their school grades depends on institutional contexts. In a simple abstract model, we show that unless competence standards are set at above-school level or the variation of competence across schools is low, students' competence valuation will be heterogeneous, with weaker schools inflating grades or flattening their dependence on competence, therefore reducing the information content and comparability of school grades. Using data from the OECD-PISA 2003 Survey, the model is applied to a sample of four countries, namely Australia, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. We find that in Australia, schools' heterogeneity does …
Monitoring of education system and the fifteen ages student achievement: analysis in the English-speaking countries with PISA 2009
2013
International audience; Education quality in developed countries is not just a question of public expenditure but is also related to educational policies (Hanushek and Woesmann, 2009). The classical economics theories (market competition) and principal-agent problem theory allow us to study agent's behaviors in education (Plassard and Tran, 2011). English-speaking countries have implemented the most advanced forms of control (for instance the NCLB in 2001 in US, and the Education Reform Act in 1988 in UK). Several studies (Hanushek and Link and Woessmann 2011) show that some kinds of institutional policies in education could have an impact on students achievement. However these studies don'…

: Why are fifteen year old French students performing less than their counterparts from other countries ?
2003
Why are fifteen year old French students performing less than their counterparts from other countries ? The scores of French students at the PISA international assessment are disappointing. This article is an attempt to understand why, through a comparison between the French situation and that of those countries which outperform France. This country appears to be in a rather favourable situation regarding the family and students attitude towards schooling and regarding the organisational framework of schooling, while in a rather unfavourable one regarding the teacher's attitudes towards learning and pupils. The article also tries to see if the French system does not compensate by a high deg…
Pamatskolas skolēnu globālās kompetences veicināšana skolotāju skatījumā (Korejas gadījums)
2021

2010
This work is part of an investigation focusing on the educational evaluation of the skill of Learning how to Learn, which addresses the issue of basic skills that students needs to develop to function throughout life in the contemporary social context. One purpose of the study is to analyze the potential of external and diagnostics evaluations to estimate the level of acquisition of these skills. Focusing on a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the PISA tests released in the specific area of Science (2000-2006), we conclude that these tests require scientific skills of low complexity, with marked presence of mere reproduction. In addition, we appreciate the gap between …
Doit-on sélectionner ou former les élites scolaires ? Une comparaison internationale des politiques éducatives
2005
This article aims to provide a starting point for reflection about the conditions required for building up an academic elite in mandatory school systems, through international quantitative evaluation. The academic elite are defined, here, not in terms of the educational level they have reached, but through the skills levels attained: the proportion of students who have reached, in each country, the highest level of skill on the main section of the PISA 2000 test. After setting out the theoretical framework, it provides analysis showing that amongst the societal factors, once a certain level of economic development has been exceeded, the size of the academic elite population is much more a fu…
