Sentinel-node biopsy in early stage ovarian cancer: a prospective multicentre study (SELLY)
2019
BackgroundSystematic para-aortic and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy is included in the standard comprehensive surgical staging in presumed early epithelial ovarian cancer. No prospective randomized evidence suggests it has potential therapeutic value, and related morbidity is not negligible.Primary Objective(s)To assess sensitivity, safety, and feasibility of the sentinel lymph node technique in identifying the presence of lymph node metastases in patients with early stage epithelial ovarian cancer.Study HypothesisSentinel lymph node detection with indocyanine green can accurately predict nodal status in a cohort of women with early stage epithelial ovarian cancer.Trial DesignThe SELLY tr…
Oncostatin M, leukaemia-inhibitory factor and interleukin 6 trigger different effects on alpha1-proteinase inhibitor synthesis in human lung-derived …
1998
Interleukin 6 (IL-6), oncostatin M (OSM) and leukaemia-inhibitory factor (LIF) share a common signal-transducing subunit in each of their receptors and thus mediate an overlapping spectrum of biological activities. Although all of these cytokines stimulate the production of α1-proteinase inhibitor (α1-PI) in hepatocyte-derived cells, only OSM is able to up-regulate levels of this inhibitor in epithelial cells originating from the lung. In this study we characterized human lung-derived epithelial-like HTB58 cells for their ability to synthesize α1-PI after treatment with IL-6, OSM and LIF. The results demonstrate that the resistance of HTB58 cells to the effects of IL-6 and LIF was not becau…
Komplikationen nach Molteno-Implantat: Eine Falldarstellung
2003
We present a 43-year old patient with refractory secondary glaucoma, who showed epithelial downgrowth into the anterior chamber following Molteno implant surgery. It will be discussed, whether the Molteno implant or the following keratoplasty, which was necessary because of corneal decompensation, caused the epithelial downgrowth.
Clinical and genetic update of corneal dystrophies.
2019
The International Committee for Classification of Corneal Dystrophies (IC3D) distinguishes between 22 distinct forms of corneal dystrophy which are predominantly autosomal dominant, although autosomal recessive and X-chromosomal dominant patterns do exist. Before any genetic examination, there should be documentation of a detailed corneal exam of as many affected and unaffected family members as possible, because detailed phenotypic description is essential for accurate diagnosis. Corneal documentation should be performed in direct and indirect illumination at the slit lamp with the pharmacologically dilated pupil. For the majority of the corneal dystrophies, a phenotype-genotype correlatio…
Spotlight on fundus autofluorescence.
2018
Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging is based on the fluorescence from ocular endogenous fluorophores located in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, mainly lipofuscin and melanin. It is a noninvasive technique that provides information about the spatial distribution of lipofuscin/melanin and retinal pigment epithelium health status. An overview about the fluorophores responsible for FAF imaging and the usefulness of FAF imaging in the noninvasive assessment and monitoring of retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, central serous chorioretinopthy, retinitis pigmentosa and retinal dystrophies, are discussed in this rev…
Combined effects of aging and a pro-diabetic diet on retinal function in a murine model of aging of the human eye
2009
; Purpose: Improvement of life expectancy and changes in the dietary behaviour of developed populations are accompanied with the prevalence of diabetes and age-related ocular pathologies. Aging of the retina is characterized by accumulation of lipids at the basement of the retinal pigment epithelium - Bruch’s membrane complex.Meanwhile increased oxidative stress is one of the features of aging and diabetes. A fructose-rich diet induces insulin resistance and hypertriglyceridemia, mimicking diabetes. The goal of our study was to evaluate the effects of a pro-diabetic fructose-enriched diet on the retinal function of the ApoB100,LDLR-/- mice, a murine model of aging of the human eye. Methods…
Mitomycin C bei oberflächlichen Hornhautablationen mit dem Excimer-Laser: Eigene Erfahrungen und Literaturübersicht
2005
Haze formation with loss of corneal transparency and surface irregularities and myopic regression are the major complications after corneal refractive surface surgery. The use of mitomycin C (MMC) with its antibiotic and antineoplastic properties is intended to inhibit wound healing mechanisms leading to subepithelial fibrosis. We report the use of MMC to achieve visual rehabilitation in the re-treatment of 3 eyes of 2 patients following refractive corneal surgery. According to the literature, the local use of MMC 0.02 % for 2 minutes is safe and enables one to treat and prevent stromal haze and myopic regression and allows a reduction of the postoperative topical pharmacotherapy. Results a…
Inducibility of the avidin gene by progesterone is suppressed during estrogen-induced cytodifferentiation.
1992
Abstract We have studied epithelial differentiation of the chick oviduct as induced by diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 17β-estradiol (E 2 ). The proportion of goblet cells in the oviduct was slightly higher after E 2 than after DES treatment. Also avidin induction by progesterone was stronger following DES than E 2 priming. In the estrogen pretreated oviduct epithelium, avidin expression was induced by progesterone in the surface epithelial cells, protodifferentiated gland cells and tubular gland cells, but not in goblet cells. During prolonged estrogen treatment, however, the inducibility of avidin by progesterone ceased in tubular gland cells but not in surface epithelial cells. The estrogen…
Diagnosis of Endometrial Carcinoma: Predictive Value of Transvaginal Color Doppler
1995
The objective of this study was to determine whether transvaginal ultrasound plus color Doppler flow improve the ability to diagnose endometrial carcinoma and allow better discrimination between benign and malignant endometrial lesions. One hundred thirty women with abnormal uterine bleeding were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler before fractional dilatation and curettage (D&C). The endometrial line thickness and endometrial characteristics were evaluated by endosonography. The resistive and pulsatile indices of the uterine arteries and of the endometrium were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler. Following D&C and tissue diagnosis, women were divided into two groups, 62 with a…
