Light weight, thin plastic foil, X-ray telescopes

We present results from a program to develop an X-ray telescope made from thin plastic shells. Our initial results have been obtained from multi-shell cylindrical lenses that are used in a point-to-point configuration to image the small focal spot of a an X-ray tube on a microchannel plate detector. We describe the steps that led up to the present design and present data from the tests that have been used to identify the properties of the plastic material that make it a suitable X-ray reflector. We discuss two applications of our technology to X-ray missions that are designed to address some of the scientific priorities set forth in NASA's long term plans for high energy astrophysics. Thin plastic shell x-ray optics: an update

We present new results from a program to develop large area X-ray telescopes that are made from thin plastic shells. We use multi-shell cylindrical lenses in a point-to-point configuration to form full aperture images of the small focal spot in a an X-ray tube on a microchannel plate detector. The image data are analyzed to yield radial profiles and encircled energy curves. The derived parameters can be extrapolated to the case of a telescope that is a conical approximation to Wolter 1 optics. The plastic shells can be coated with suitable mono- or multilayers that allow for a wideband coverage of X-ray energies. Graphical representation of non-absorbing polarization devices

A graphical representation of general non-absorbing polarization devices operating under normal plane-wave incidence is presented. The representation is based on a four-dimensional spherical parametrization of the Jones matrix of this kind of polarization devices. The graphical representation takes the form of a solid cylinder. The projection of the point representing the device over the base of the cylinder gives the corresponding polarization eigenvectors represented in the complex plane, while the height of the point in the cylinder is the phase of its eigenvalue. Particular attention is paid to the question of extrapolation of the characteristic curve for the region of the weakest stars in the absence of standards. Self-consistent subduction initiation induced by mantle flow

2015

Mantle circulation in planets with strongly temperature-dependent viscosity results in stagnant-lid convection. It is fundamental to understand how this stagnant-lid regime can change into a plate-like convection regime as on the present-day Earth. Here, we use 2D numerical models to study subduction initiation from an initial stagnant lid with laboratory-consistent parameters and without pre-existing weak zones or kinematic boundary conditions. Our results show that subduction can be initiated dynamically as a result of a thermal localization instability. Cell Cycle in Potentially Dedifferentiating Cereal Mesophyll Protoplasts Cultured in vitro II. Behaviour of the Cytoskeleton

Summary Following up on the recent finding that mesophyll protoplasts of wheat and oats were able to reenter the cell cycle when cultured in vitro , the behaviour of the cytoskeleton was studied. The aim was to elucidate whether changes in the cytoskeletal patterns correlate with the abnormal progression through the cycle observed previously. The First Cell Division Cycle in Nicotiana Mesophyll Protoplasts Cultured in vitro II. Microtubules and the Plane of Division

Summary Reorganization of the microtubular cytoskeleton prior to and during the first cell division cycle of Nicotiana mesophyll protoplasts was investigated using immunofluorescence microscopy. Bands of microtubules reminiscent of PPBs were found. However, their structure was comparatively diffuse. In addition, frequencies were low compared to those in meristem cells of organized tissues. ABSTRACT Human parechovirus 1 (HPEV-1) is a prototype member of parechoviruses, a recently established picornavirus genus. Although there is preliminary evidence that HPEV-1 recognizes α V integrins as cellular receptors, our understanding of early events during HPEV-1 infection is still very limited.
