Laboratory parameters in centenarians of Italian ancestry

2008

Studies aimed at collecting reference parameters for haematochemical analysis in the elderly are scarce and for the oldest old subjects even more rare. In order to establish the reference values for the most common laboratory text in long living individuals, we measured haematochemical parameters in >100 years old subjects and in aged subjects as control. Six hundred and two centenarians accepted to be enrolled in the study. A case history containing the complete anamnesis, clinical examinations, evaluation of the clinical cognitive and functional tests, was prepared for each centenarian. Blood samples from 120 > 100 years old subjects free of chronic or acute Illness (i.e. Alzheimer’s dise…

Gpibα Engagement Induces Activation of Human Platelet TF and Association with Constitutively Platelet Surface-Bound FVIIa

2019

The membranes of activated platelets assemble clotting protein complexes and enzymatic reactions needed for hemostasis and causing pathological thrombosis. Several reports have shown that human platelets contain TF, but controversies remain on the functional contributions of platelet TF to coagulation initiation. Here, we delineate the mechanism that converts platelet-associated TF to a procoagulant molecule. By combining specific inhibitors with human platelets from normal probands or patients with Glanzmann thrombasthenia or homozygous GPVI deficiency, we analyzed the procoagulant activation of platelet TF by biochemical methods, confocal microscopy, platelet adhesion under flow on VWF an…

Contact-dependent inhibition of growth of normal diploid human fibroblasts by plasma membrane glycoproteins.

1988

Homeostasis in vivo is maintained by a highly complex network of positive and negative signals. At the cellular level, this regulatory microenvironment can be divided, in a simplified fashion, into two major compartments: the humoral compartment, including compounds such as hormones, growth factors and nutrients, and the contact-environment compartment, including cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. At least in cultures of diploid, non-transformed cells, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions have been shown to be of major importance for the regulation of growth as well as of differentiation. Although until now the glycoprotein involved in the contact-dependent inhibition of growth has n…

Muscle resting and TGF-β inhibitor treatment prevent fatty infiltration following skeletal muscle injury

2019

Background/Aims: Skeletal muscle injuries are the most common type of injury occurring in sports, and investigating skeletal muscle regeneration as well as understanding the related processes is an important aspect of the sports medicine field. The process of regeneration appears to be complex and precisely orchestrated, involving fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) which are a muscle-resident stem cell population that appears to play a major role in abnormal development of fibrotic tissue or intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). Our present study aims to investigate whether muscle resting or endurance exercise following muscle injury may change the behavior of FAPs and subsequently impact t…

NEW GUIDED BONE REGENERATION PROCEDURE USING LEUKOCYTE AND PLATELET RICH FIBRIN (L PRF) IN ORAL SURGERY

2021

Non-transfusional hemocomponents are autogenous products used in several surgical fields obtained by the centrifugation of a blood sample from a patient and able to promote hard and soft tissue regeneration, local haemostasis, and the acceleration of wound healing. The aim of this PhD thesis was the validation of an innovative protocol for the Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) technique using second-generation autologous platelet concentrates, Leukocytes and Platelet-rich Fibrin (L-PRF), in post-extraction sockets of patients in need of dental avulsions and successive implant prosthetic rehabilitation, evaluating its ability to prevent alveolar bone resorption and promote bone regeneration. The gut microbiota - a modulator of endothelial cell function and a contributing environmental factor to arterial thrombosis.

2019

Introduction: There is emerging evidence linking the commensal gut microbiota with the development of cardiovascular disease and arterial thrombosis. In immunothrombosis, the host clotting system protects against the dissemination of invading microbes, not considering the huge number of microbes that interact with host physiology in a mutualistic fashion. Areas covered: Interestingly, recent research revealed that colonizing gut microbes profoundly influence host innate immune pathways that support arterial thrombus growth. The gut microbiota promotes arterial thrombus formation by enhancing the pro-adhesive capacity of the vascular endothelium, triggering hepatic von Willebrand factor synt…

Antithrombotische Therapie bei peripherer arterieller Verschlusskrankheit

2018

Was ist neu?

Reversal of rivaroxaban-induced alterations on hemostasis by different coagulation factor concentrates – in vitro studies with steady and circulating…

2015

BACKGROUND: Despite the good safety of rivaroxaban, there is limited information on strategies for urgent reversal of its antihemostatic effects. Methods and Results:Alterations of hemostasis induced by rivaroxaban (230 ng/ml) were assessed by using several tests applied to steady and circulating human blood. Effects on thrombin generation (TG) and thromboelastometry (TEM) parameters were measured. Modifications in platelet adhesive, aggregating and procoagulant activities were evaluated in studies with circulating blood. The potential reversal of prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs; 50 IU/kg), activated PCCs (aPCCs; 75 IU/kg), or recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa; 270 μg/kg) was evaluated.…

Origin of metazoan adhesion molecules and adhesion receptors as deduced from cDNA analyses in the marine sponge Geodia cydonium: a review.

1997

The phylogenetic relationships of the kingdom Animalia (Metazoa) have long been questioned. Whether the lowest eukaryotic multicellular organisms, the metazoan phylum Porifera (sponges), independently evolved multicellularity from a separate protist lineage (polyphyly of animals) or whether they were derived from the same protist group as the other animal phyla (monophyly) remains unclear. Analyses of the genes that are typical for multicellularity, e.g. those coding for adhesion molecules (galectin) and adhesion receptors (receptor tyrosine kinase, integrin receptor, receptors featuring scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domains) or elements involved in signal transduction pathways (G-protei…
