Measurement of the polarization of $$\Lambda ^0 , \overline \Lambda ^0 , \Sigma ^ + $$ and ?? produced in a ?? beam of 330 GeV/c

The polarization of Lambda0 , AntiLambda0 , Sigma+ and Xi- inclusively produced in Sigma- induced interactions at 330 GeV has been measured in the experiment WA89 at CERN. This is the first measurement of polarization of baryons produced by a hyperon beam. No polarization of AntiLambda is observed, as was also the case in proton beam data. At transverse momenta of about 1~GeV/c Lambda0 and Sigma+ show little polarization, significantly lower than in the proton beam data, while Xi- have a polarization comparable to the polarization of Lambda0 produced in proton beams. Polarimetry on dense samples of spin-polarized 3He by magnetostatic detection

Abstract A very sensitive low-field fluxgate magnetometer is used to detect the static magnetic field produced by dense samples of spin-polarized 3He gas contained in spherical glass cells at pressures around several bars. The 3He nuclear polarization can be extracted with high precision ΔP P by utilizing magnetostatic detection in combination with adiabatic fast-passage spin reversal. The polarization losses can be kept well below 0.1% thus making this type of polarimetry almost non-destructive. Sweeping the Space of Admissible Quark Mass Matrices

We propose a new and efficient method of reconstructing quark mass matrices from their eigenvalues and a complete set of mixing observables. By a combination of the principle of NNI (nearest neighbour interaction) bases which are known to cover the general case, and of the polar decomposition theorem that allows to convert arbitrary nonsingular matrices to triangular form, we achieve a parameterization where the remaining freedom is reduced to one complex parameter. Many-body approach to the inclusive (e,e ') reaction from the quasielastic to the Delta excitation region

We have performed a many body calculation of the inclusive (e,e') cross section which runs over the three traditional regions at intermediate energies: the quasielastic peak, the dip region and the delta region. The longitudinal and transverse response functions in the quasielastic peak have also been evaluated. Traditional effects like polarization, meson exchange currents, final state interaction and delta renormalization in the nuclear medium have been included. Meson exchange currents are generated from a model of pion electroproduction on the nucleon which reproduces accurately the experimental data. Polarizability effects in electronic and muonic atoms

TheS state polarizability shifts are derived from the virtual forward Compton scattering in the unretarded dipole approximation. In the non-relativistic limit ω N /2m≪1, the shift is proportional to the photonuclear sum rule σ−3/2, while in the relativistic limit ω N /2m≫1 it is proportional to a logarithmically weighted σ−2 sum rule. In both cases, the characteristic momentum transfer is (2mω N )1/2. The non-locality from the intermediate lepton propagation removes the divergence typical of the static limit. Explicit formulas for the shifts are given for both the relativistic and non-relativistic limits.
Ab initio calculation of nuclear structure corrections in muonic atoms

The measurement of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and the subsequent emergence of the proton-radius puzzle have motivated an experimental campaign devoted to measuring the Lamb shift in other light muonic atoms, such as muonic deuterium and helium. For these systems it has been shown that two-photon exchange nuclear structure corrections are the largest source of uncertainty and consequently the bottleneck for exploiting the experimental precision to extract the nuclear charge radius. General Multipole Expansion of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

Formal expressions are derived for the multipole expansion of the structure functions of a general polarization observable of exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron using a longitudinally polarized beam and/or an oriented target. This allows one to exhibit explicitly the angular dependence of the structure functions by expanding them in terms of the small rotation matrices $d^j_{m'm}(\theta)$, whose coefficients are given in terms of the electromagnetic multipole matrix elements. Furthermore, explicit expressions for the coefficients of the angular distributions of the differential cross section including multipoles up to $L_{max}=3$ are listed in tabular form.
A Ramsey apparatus for the measurement of the incoherent neutron scattering length of the deuteron

Abstract A Ramsey apparatus for cold, polarised neutrons is described, which enables us to measure neutron precession angles with an absolute accuracy of about 1 ∘ . This is necessary to perform a planned high-accuracy measurement of the incoherent neutron scattering length b i , d of the deuteron. The performance of the apparatus is demonstrated in systematic stability measurements as well as in two selected examples using samples containing polarised nuclear spins.
The role of the neutron electric form factor ind(e, e? N)N including polarization observables

The influence of the neutron electric form factor on various observables in two-body break-up of deuterons by electrons such as differential cross section, beam, target and beam-target asymmetries and outgoing nucleon polarization as well is investigated for different kinematic regions. The electron-deuteron vector asymmetryAedV and the outgoing nucleon polarization component P′x(n) are the most promising observables in and off the quasi-free region for a determination ofGEn. Also the single polarization observablesAdT and Py0(p) and the double polarization observable P′z(n) show significant influences fromGEn.
One-quasiparticle States in the Nuclear Energy Density Functional Theory

We study one-quasiproton excitations in the rare-earth region in the framework of the nuclear Density Functional Theory in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov variant. The blocking prescription is implemented exactly, with the time-odd mean field fully taken into account. The equal filling approximation is compared with the exact blocking procedure. We show that both procedures are strictly equivalent when the time-odd channel is neglected, and discuss how nuclear alignment properties affect the time-odd fields. The impact of time-odd fields on calculated one-quasiproton bandhead energies is found to be rather small, of the order of 100-200 keV; hence, the equal filling approximation is suff…
