Quantification and visualization of finite strain in 3D viscous numerical models of folding and overthrusting

2020

Abstract Finite strain analysis and three-dimensional (3D) numerical modeling are important methods to understand the deformation history of rocks. Here, we analyze finite strain in 3D numerical simulations of power-law viscous folding and overthrusting. Simulations with different and laterally varying detachment geometries cause a lateral transition from folding (for thicker detachments) to overthrusting. We compute the 3D finite strain tensor, the principal strain values and their orientations. We compute the Nadai strain, e S , and the Lode’s ratio, ν , representing the strain symmetry (constriction or flattening). We apply Hsu diagrams to visualize strain distribution in e S - ν space, …

Radio polarization maps of shell-type SNRs II. Sedov models with evolution of turbulent magnetic field

2017

Polarized radio emission has been mapped with great detail in several Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), but has not yet been exploited to the extent it deserves. We have developed a method to model maps of the Stokes parameters for shell-like SNRs during their Sedov evolution phase. At first, 3-dimensional structure of a SNR has been computed, by modeling the distribution of the magnetohydrodynamic parameters and of the accelerated particles. The generation and dissipation of the turbulent component of magnetic field everywhere in SNR are also considered taking into account its interaction with accelerated particles. Then, in order to model the emission, we have used a generalization of t…

Rapid parameter determination of discrete damped sinusoidal oscillations

2020

We present different computational approaches for the rapid extraction of the signal parameters of discretely sampled damped sinusoidal signals. We compare time- and frequency-domain-based computational approaches in terms of their accuracy and precision and computational time required in estimating the frequencies of such signals, and observe a general trade-off between precision and speed. Our motivation is precise and rapid analysis of damped sinusoidal signals as these become relevant in view of the recent experimental developments in cavity-enhanced polarimetry and ellipsometry, where the relevant time scales and frequencies are typically within the ∼1 − 10 µs and ∼1 − 100 MHz ranges, …

Apical transport of osteopontin is independent of N-glycosylation and sialylation.

2002

Studies of how epithelial surface polarity into apical and basolateral domains is generated and maintained have proposed that carbohydrate modifications serve as apical targeting signals for proteins by interacting with lectin sorters. However, the experimental evidence in support of N-glycans, O-glycans and sialic acids mediating apical transport is still very controversial. This could be partly due to the fact that in most studies exogenously expressed proteins were analysed. One has, therefore, examined the role of carbohydrate moieties in apical targeting of the endogenous secretory protein osteopontin in MDCK cells. It was found, however, that sorting of osteopontin does not require N-…

Flip angle considerations in (3)helium-MRI.

2000

3Helium-MRI ((3)He-MRI) can be used for analysis of lung function, e. g. dynamic imaging of ventilation and gas diffusion within the lung, assessment of intrapulmonary oxygen concentrations and their time course. During imaging, the irreversible signal loss due to depolarizing radio frequency excitations can be described using the flip angle (FA) alpha. This parameter has to be quantified in order to account for it during quantitative assessment of the (3)helium signal intensity and its temporal development. This technical report reviews two different methods to determine alpha. Limitations and possible error sources of each method are discussed.

Probing the radio emission from air showers with polarization measurements

2014

The emission of radio waves from air showers has been attributed to the so-called geomagnetic emission process. At frequencies around 50 MHz this process leads to coherent radiation which can be observed with rather simple setups. The direction of the electric field induced by this emission process depends only on the local magnetic field vector and on the incoming direction of the air shower. We report on measurements of the electric field vector where, in addition to this geomagnetic component, another component has been observed which cannot be described by the geomagnetic emission process. The data provide strong evidence that the other electric field component is polarized radially wit…

Alkoxysilylation of π-systems with extended conjugation—reactive chromophores for organic–inorganic hybrid materials

2004

Luminescent stilbenoid chromophores with diethoxysilane end groups are prepared via Heck reactions. Diethoxysilane-substituted styrenes are used as vinylic components, thus allowing the combined connection of the chromophore to the silane moiety with an extension of the π-system. 1,4-Distyrylbenzenes with a terminal bromine are used as coupling partners. The electrical and optical properties the four-ring OPVs are tuned via substitution with donating alkoxy side chains and electron withdrawing cyanide and a naphthyl-1,2,3-oxadiazole moiety. Hydrolysis yields film forming and luminescent cyclosiloxanes.
