Molecular aggregates of quinuclidine and chlorophyll a

A slightly polar molecule quinuclidine seems to form weakly bound aggregates in concentrated water solutions. Molecular dynamics simulation of a 6 mol water solution indicates clustering of quinuclidine molecules into an almost spherical structure with polar ends of the molecules pointing towards the solvent. Experimental evidence of aggregation was obtained by observing a small but obvious red shift of the o'' a absorption and a dramatic shortening of the fluorescence lifetime of the c n transition of concentrated solutions. Polystyrene-supported organocatalysts for α-selenenylation and Michael reactions

Abstract Three different resin-supported catalysts have been prepared by using the well established post-modification approach by means of thiol-ene coupling reaction. Two catalysts were tested for the first time in the asymmetric α-selenenylation of propanal, while the third catalyst was used in the Michael addition reaction. While the preliminary results are not encouraging in the case of supported Jorgensen’ catalyst, interesting data have been collected with both for the supported MacMillan and prolyl-prolinol catalysts. Sorafenib perpetuates cellular anti-cancer effector functions by modulating the cross talk between macrophages and natural killer cells.

Alternatively polarized macrophages (Mϕ) shape the microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and temper anticancer immune responses. We investigated if sorafenib alters the HCC microenvironment by restoring classical macrophage polarization and triggering tumor-directed natural killer (NK) cell responses. In vivo experiments were conducted with sorafenib (25 mg/kg)-treated C57BL/6 wildtype as well as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and lymphotoxin transgenic mice with and without HCC. Microphones’ Directivity for the Localization of Sound Sources

In a recent paper [P. Rizzo, G. Bordoni, A. Marzani, and J. Vipperman, "Localization of Sound Sources by Means of Unidirectional Microphones, Meas. Sci. Tech., 20, 055202 (12pp), 2009] the proof-of-concept of an approach for the localization of acoustic sources was presented. The method relies on the use of unidirectional microphones and amplitude-based signals' features to extract information about the direction of the incoming sound. Cloning and characterization of the promoter of Hugl-2, the human homologue of Drosophila lethal giant larvae (lgl) polarity gene.

The human lgl gene, Hugl-2 (llgl2, Lgl2), codes for a cytoskeletal protein involved in regulating cell polarity. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of the promoter region ( approximately 1.2kb) of the Hugl-2 gene. Luciferase expression assays show a high basal Hugl-2 promoter activity in different cell lines and primary human hepatocytes. Truncations of the promoter identified a GC-rich region important for this activity. Alignment of human and mouse genomic sequences demonstrate that this is an evolutionary conserved region fcontaining putative binding sites for several transcription factors including Elk-1 and Sp-1. Dynamical binary modulation of ultrabroadband light beams by using principal states of polarization of liquid crystal devices

Dynamical modulation of ultrabroadband beams, such as those produced by femtosecond laser or incoherent sources, is not an easy task due to the dispersive nature of the devices commonly employed. Phase modulation has been performed by means of deformable micromirror arrays. These devices are expensive and do not permit amplitude modulation. The Time Domain Induced Polarization (TDIP) technique is widely used in applied geophysics, particularly for environmental issues, for instance for delineating landfills or detecting leachate percolation. Because the reliability of IP data remains an issue at the field scale, this paper deals with the factors controlling data quality and compares different arrays and acquisition parameters for optimal collection of data in the field. Quantitative spin polarization analysis in photoelectron emission microscopy with an imaging spin filter.

Abstract Using a photoelectron emission microscope (PEEM), we demonstrate spin-resolved electron spectroscopic imaging of ultrathin magnetic Co films grown on Cu(100). The spin-filter, based on the spin-dependent reflection of low energy electrons from a W(100) crystal, is attached to an aberration corrected electrostatic energy analyzer coupled to an electrostatic PEEM column. Magnetic Ordering and Spin Dynamics of Ba1-xEuxSi Phases

We have investigated the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics of the solid solution series Ba1–xEuxSi with 0 < x ≤ 1 applying X-ray diffraction, electric conductivity measurements, Mossbauer spectroscopy, muon spin depolarization, and neutron diffraction. Our results suggest a spin glass-like behavior of Ba1–xEuxSi for concentrations close to x = 0.3 exist. Different spin ordering phenomena are found, which are dependent on the relative europium concentrations.

Self-assembly, metal binding ability, and magnetic properties of dinickel(II) and dicobalt(II) triple mesocates

Two metallacyclic complexes of general formula Na-8[(M2L3)-L-II]center dot xH(2)O [M = Ni (4) and Co (5) with x = 15 (4) and 17 (5)] have been self-assembled in aqueous solution from N,N'-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic acid) (H4L) and M2+ ions in a ligand/metal molar ratio of 3 : 2 in the presence of NaOH acting as base. X-Ray structural analyses of 4 and 5 show triple-stranded, dinuclear anions of the meso-helicate-type (so-called mesocates) with C-3h molecular symmetry.
