All polarization-maintaining passively mode-locked fiber-ring ytterbium-doped laser; from net-normal to net-anomalous dispersion

We investigated the behavior of a fiber-ring polarization-maintaining passively modelocked ytterbium-doped laser in a broad range of dispersion values; i.e., from highly net-normal to net-anomalous, with a special emphasis near the zero of chromatic dispersion. Different lengths of an ad hoc polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber were used as intracavity dispersion compensator to shift the operation of this laser from net-normal to the net-anomalous regime. Polarization transfer via field sweeping in parahydrogen-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance.

<div><br></div><div><table><tr><td>We show that in a spin system of two magnetically inequivalent protons coupled to a heteronucleus such as 13C, an adiabatic magnetic field sweep, passing through zero field, transfers proton singlet order into magnetization of the coupled heteronucleus. This effect is potentially useful in parahydrogen-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance, and is demonstrated on singlet-hyperpolarized [1-13C]maleic acid, which is prepared via the reaction between [1-13C]acetylene dicarboxylic acid and para-enriched hydrogen gas. Electrodialysis for wastewater treatment—Part I: Fundamentals and municipal effluents

Abstract Selectivity, high recovery, and chemical-free operation are strengths of electrodialysis. Different configurations have been proposed for several applications. Effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants (including sludge and supernatants), desalination plants, and animal farms can be treated for recovering water, nutrients, salts, and acids/bases. Although many applications are technoeconomically feasible and competitive with other zero liquid discharge systems, only a few real plants have been installed. However, the research is currently very active, thus paving the way for a widespread use at large scale in the next future.

Abstract Electrodialysis and related processes have huge potential in the treatment of effluents from a variety of industrial processes. They can recover water and other valuable products, including heavy metal ions, acids and bases, nutrients, and organics. In recent years, novel and improved systems have been continuously developed as a result of research in the field, showing that the (near) zero liquid discharge approach can be affordable in several industrial applications. A larger market share is expected in the near future.

Numerical Evidences of Polarization Switching in PMN Type Relaxor Ferroelectrics

We present a conceptual and computational framework for chemically ordered Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3) (PMN) type supercells violating disorder of the host lattice. The effective Hamiltonian is specified by invariance under permutations of supercells and by the dipole-dipole interaction supporting both local nonzero and zero mean polarization of the structure. Statistics treated in canonical ensemble within the mean field approach reveals emergence of polar nanoregions as supported by interplay between the (random) initial state polarization of supercells and their interactions increased at cooling.

International audience; An important step in the analysis and interpretation of video scenes for recognizing scenario is the aberration corrections introduced during the image acquisition in order to provide and correct real image data. This paper presents an approach on distortion correction based on stereoscopic self calibration from images sequences by using a multi-camera system of vision (network cameras). This approach for correcting image distortion brings an elegant and robust technique with good accuracy. Without any knowledge of shooting conditions, the camera's parameters will be estimated. GW170814: A Three-Detector Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Coalescence

On August 14, 2017 at 10 30:43 UTC, the Advanced Virgo detector and the two Advanced LIGO detectors coherently observed a transient gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar mass black holes, with a false-alarm rate of 1 in 27 000 years. The signal was observed with a three-detector network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 18. The inferred masses of the initial black holes are 30.5-3.0+5.7M and 25.3-4.2+2.8M (at the 90% credible level). The luminosity distance of the source is 540-210+130 Mpc, corresponding to a redshift of z=0.11-0.04+0.03. Observation of laser-induced field-free permanent planar alignment of molecules

International audience; Permanent planar alignment of gas-phase linear molecules is achieved by a pair of delayed perpendicularly polarized short laser pulses. The experiment is performed in a supersonic jet, ensuring a relatively high number density of molecules with moderately low rotational temperature. The effect is optically probed on a femtosecond time scale by the use of a third short pulse, enabling a time-resolved birefringence detection performed successively in two perpendicular planes of the laboratory frame.
