Anisotropic polarization of non‐polar GaN quantum dot emission

We report on experimental and theoretical studies of the polarization selection rules of the emission of non-polar GaN/AlN self-assembled quantum dots. Time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements have been performed to determine the degree of polarization. It is found that the emission of some samples can be predominantly polarized parallel to the wurtzite c axis, in striking difference with the previously reported results for bulk GaN and its heterostructures, in which the emission was preferentially polarized perpendicular to the c axis. New Materials with High Spin Polarization Investigated by X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

We investigate element-specific spin and orbital magnetic moments of polycrystalline bulk Heusler alloys that are predicted to be half-metallic with composition Co2YZ (Y = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe and Z = Al, Ga, Si, Ge, Sn, Sb) using magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS/XMCD). In addition to stoichiometric compounds we also investigate composition series with partly replaced elements on the Y-site (Co2Fe x Cr1−x Si, Co2Mn x Ti1−x Si and Co2Mn x Ti1−x Ge) and on the Z-site (Co2MnGa1−x Ge x ) promising a tailoring of the Fermi level with respect to the minority band gap. Relation between the Fukui function and the Coulomb hole

By using a coarse-grain representation of the molecular electronic density, we demonstrate that the value of the condensed Fukui function at an atomic site is directly related to the polarization charge (Coulomb hole) induced by a test electron removed (or added) from (at) the atom. The link between the formation of an electron-hole pair and the condensed Fukui function provides insights on the possible negativity of the Fukui function which is interpreted in terms of two phenomena: overscreening and over-strengthening.

We demonstrate an automatic tunable transversal notch filter based on uniform fiber Bragg gratings and a broadband optical source. High tunability can be performed by stretching the fiber with the gratings written in series. Also, high sidelobe supression can be achieved by introducing tunable attenuators in a parallel configuration of the gratings.

Polarization detection of trapped electrons via interaction with polarized atoms

Electrons were trapped in an electrostatic quadrupole trap with superimposed homogeneous magnetic field. The electrons were polarized by spin exchange with a polarized atomic beam. The free trapped electron polarization was converted to a change in the electron translational energy via spin-dependent inelastic collisions with the atomic beam, and the electron translational temperature was monitored. Discussed are the development of this variation of the measurement technique, characteristics of electron storage, and the electron-polarized atom inelastic interaction as a function of electron temperature and time. How to reconcile the Rosenbluth and the polarization transfer method in the measurement of the proton form factors

The apparent discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and the polarization transfer method for the ratio of the electric to magnetic proton form factors can be explained by a two-photon exchange correction which does not destroy the linearity of the Rosenbluth plot. Though intrinsically small, of the order of a few percent of the cross section, this correction is kinematically enhanced in the Rosenbluth method while it is small for the polarization transfer method, at least in the range of (Q^2) where it has been used until now.
Orientational order of Langmuir–Blodgett films as determined by fluorescence anisotropy

The orientational order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉, of cadmium stearate Langmuir–Blodgett multilayers have been calculated from steady state fluorescence anisotropy experiments. It has been shown that it is valid to model the polarization components using the assumptions that the fluorescent probes are axially symmetric, the film is azimuthally symmetric within the plane, and that the rotational motion is slow enough to be neglected. Although the data do not preclude a dependence of anisotropy on thickness, within the sample‐to‐sample variations, there is no significant effect of thickness on orientational order. Influence of strain in the reduction of the internal electric field in GaN/AlN quantum dots grown ona-plane 6H-SiC

The strain state of stacks of GaN/AIN quantum dots (QDs) grown on (0001) and (1120) 6H-SiC has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. Depending on the orientation of the wurtzite axis with respect to the growth direction it is found that the piezoelectric contribution to the electrostatic potential may either reinforce that arising from the spontaneous polarization or oppose it. The experimental results are compared with a theoretical model for the strain and polarization field in QDs of both orientations that allows the calculation of the electrostatic potential in the QDs. Nominally pure has been studied by dielectric spectroscopy using small (linear regime) as well as large electrical fields (non-linear regime) up to . In addition measurements of the specific heat and its field-dependent contribution have been carried out. The field dependence of the dielectric constant and the specific heat can be well described by the transverse Ising Hamiltonian including tunnelling and external field terms. It gives evidence for the existence of polar clusters at low temperatures which are supposed to be associated with the quantum paraelectric state below in accord with recent free-energy calculations.
