Introduction . The aim of our study was to analyze the effect of various levels of light availability in the fruit microenvironment (induced by summer pruning) on some fruit quality traits. Materials and methods . Two levels of summer pruning were set: removal of either 30% or 60% of the canopy leaf area. These treatments were compared with the control (unpruned vines). Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the influence of static and multi-pulsed hydrostatic pressure processing (HPP) treatments on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductase activity, colour, and browning index of carrot juice. Phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans and other polyphenols were the predominant polyphenols detected with Triple-TOF-LC-MS/MS. The highest concentration of ferulic acid, didymin, dihydro-p-coumaric acid, sesaminol and matairesinol isomers were found among all the compounds detected. However, few data are available on the antitumoral activities of its dimer, epsilon-viniferin, also present in human diet. So, the effects of resveratrol, epsilon-viniferin, of their acetylated forms (resveratrol triacetate, epsilon-viniferin pentaacetate) and of vineatrol (a wine grape extract) were compared on human adenocarcinoma colon cells. We assessed the effects of Zizyphus lotus L. (Desf.) polyphenols (ZLP) on T-cell signaling and proliferation. Our results showed that ZLP exerted no effect on the increases in intracellular free calcium concentrations, [Ca(2+)]i, in human Jurkat T-cells. However, ZLP modulated the thapsigargin-induced increases in [Ca(2+)]i in these cells. ZLP treatment was found to decrease the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). In addition, ZLP induced a rapid (t1/2=33s) and dose-dependent decrease in intracellular pH (pHi) in human Jurkat T-cells. Abstract Three fruit beverages: Fb (grape–orange–apricot), FbFe (Fb + iron sulphate) and FbFeM (FbFe + skimmed milk) were subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Addition of Fe and milk decreased the phenolic content of Fb by 13% and 55%, respectively. The digestion process decreased the phenolic content by 47%, 60%, and 70% in Fb, FbFe and FbFeM with respect to the initial, non-digested, Fb. Caco-2 cells were incubated for 4 h daily for four days or continuously for 24 h with bioaccessible fractions obtained after the digestion (digests). Polyphenols were not metabolised by Caco-2 cells.
