Towards an ideal source of mesenchymal stem cell isolation for possible therapeutic application in regenerative medicine.
2014
Background. The possibility of obtaining mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from fetal tissue such as amniotic fluid, chorionic villi and placenta is well-known and a comparison between MSCs originating in different sources such as fetal tissue and those from bone marrow in terms of yield and function is a topical issue. The mesenchymal stem cells isolated from bone marrow are well-characterized. Unfortunately the low quantitative yield during isolation is a major problem. For this reason, other tissue sources for MSCs are of paramount importance. Conclusion. In this review, starting from a description of the molecular and cellular biology of MSCs, we describe alternative sources of isolation ot…
The Transfer Function of Non-Stationary Indoor Channels and its Relationship to System Functions of LFMCW Radars
2021
This paper studies the relationship between the time-variant (TV) channel transfer function (CTF) of non-stationary indoor channels and the system functions of linear frequency modulated continuous waves (LFMCW) radars. To do so, we consider a moving person/object in indoor environments, which is modelled by a cluster of moving point scatterers. It is shown that the TVCTF can be obtained from the beat signal of LFMCW radar systems. Analytical expressions are derived for the TV demodulated radar response, the complex channel gain, and the TV Doppler-delay profile. A relationship between the presented results and existing non-stationary indoor channel models assuming pulsed wave systems is al…
Endothelial Leptin Receptor Deletion Promotes Cardiac Autophagy and Angiogenesis Following Pressure Overload by Suppressing Akt/mTOR Signaling.
2019
Background: Cardiac remodeling is modulated by overnutrition or starvation. The adipokine leptin mediates energy balance between adipose tissue and brain. Leptin and its receptors are expressed in the heart. Methods and Results: To examine the importance of endothelial leptin signaling in cardiac hypertrophy, transverse aortic constriction was used in mice with inducible endothelium-specific deletion of leptin receptors (End.LepR-KO) or littermate controls (End.LepR-WT). End.LepR-KO was associated with improved left ventricular function (fractional shortening, 28.4% versus 18.8%; P =0.0114), reduced left ventricular dilation (end-systolic inner left ventricular diameter, 3.59 versus 4.08 m…
Glycogen synthase 2 is a novel target gene of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors.
2007
International audience; Glycogen synthase 2 (Gys-2) is the ratelimiting enzyme in the storage of glycogen in liver and adipose tissue, yet little is known about regulation of Gys-2 transcription. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are transcription factors involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism and might be hypothesized to govern glycogen synthesis as well. Here, we show that Gys-2 is a direct target gene of PPARalpha, PPARbeta/delta and PPARgamma. Expression of Gys-2 is significantly reduced in adipose tissue of PPARalpha-/-, PPARbeta/delta-/- and PPARgamma+/- mice. Furthermore, synthetic PPARbeta/delta, and gamma agonists markedly up-regulate Gys-2…
Changes in Body Composition in Anorexia Nervosa : Predictors of Recovery and Treatment Outcome
2015
The restoration of body composition (BC) parameters is considered to be one of the most important goals in the treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about differences between AN diagnostic subtypes [restricting (AN-R) and binge/purging (AN-BP)] and weekly changes in BC during refeeding treatment. Therefore, the main objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the changes in BC throughout nutritional treatment in an AN sample and 2) to analyze predictors of BC changes during treatment, as well as predictors of treatment outcome. The whole sample comprised 261 participants [118 adult females with AN (70 AN-R vs. 48 AN-BP), and 143 healthy controls].…
El proyecto mapa escolar de Valencia: Análisis de la zonificación educativa de la ciudad de Valencia
2018
The research project Mapa Escolar de Valencia (School Map of Valencia) was born out of an agreement between the City Council and the University of Valencia in order to carry out an investigation of the compulsory education system of the city and propose, if necessary, modifications to the current school zoning. The project is structured in several research areas. An analysis of the specialized scientific literature and public policies concerning education and schooling has been done, and it is currently analysing the evolution of quantitative and qualitative data on compulsory schooling in Valencia, its school zoning, the representations of education and the school climate in the city schoo…
The importance of pattern similarity between Müllerian mimics in predator avoidance learning
2004
Müllerian mimicry, where unpalatable prey share common warning patterns, has long fascinated evolutionary biologists. It is commonly assumed that Müllerian mimics benefit by sharing the costs of predator education, thus reducing per capita mortality, although there has been no direct test of this assumption. Here, we specifically measure the selection pressure exerted by avian predators on unpalatable prey with different degrees of visual similarity in their warning patterns. Using wild-caught birds foraging on novel patterned prey in the laboratory, we unexpectedly found that pattern similarity did not increase the speed of avoidance learning, and even dissimilar mimics shared the educatio…
Response of bird predators for female wood tiger moth chemical defences
2018
Multiple behavioural responses of blue tit predators to the defence fluids of wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) females that were either food deprived or fed ad libitum during development.
Regular 1-harmonic flow
2017
We consider the 1-harmonic flow of maps from a bounded domain into a submanifold of a Euclidean space, i.e. the gradient flow of the total variation functional restricted to maps taking values in the manifold. We restrict ourselves to Lipschitz initial data. We prove uniqueness and, in the case of a convex domain, local existence of solutions to the flow equations. If the target manifold has non-positive sectional curvature or in the case that the datum is small, solutions are shown to exist globally and to become constant in finite time. We also consider the case where the domain is a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, solving the homotopy problem for 1-harmonic maps under some …
