This chapter reflects the argument developed in the previous chapters, concluding that cosmopolitanism as nonrelationism is both a distinct and plausible position within the global justice debate. The chapter identifies prominent proponents and excludes others. A sub-supersolution approach for Neumann boundary value problems with gradient dependence

Abstract Existence and location of solutions to a Neumann problem driven by an nonhomogeneous differential operator and with gradient dependence are established developing a non-variational approach based on an adequate method of sub-supersolution. The abstract theorem is applied to prove the existence of finitely many positive solutions or even infinitely many positive solutions for a class of Neumann problems.

HCV-induced immune responses influence the development of operational tolerance after liver transplantation in humans.

Pathogen-induced immune responses prevent the establishment of transplantation tolerance in experimental animal models. Whether this occurs in humans as well remains unclear. The development of operational tolerance in liver transplant recipients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection allows us to address this question. We conducted a clinical trial of immunosuppression withdrawal in HCV-infected adult liver recipients to elucidate (i) the mechanisms through which allograft tolerance can be established in the presence of an ongoing inflammatory response and (ii) whether anti-HCV heterologous immune responses influence this phenomenon. Response of soil bacteria to Hg (II) in relation to soil characteristics and cell location

The response of indigenous bacterial communities to the addition of inorganic mercury (50 μM of Hg(II)) was compared over a 30 day period in four soils of contrasting properties. Hg(II) impact was estimated by following population dynamics of viable heterotrophic bacteria (VH) and mercury resistant bacteria (HgR) by indirect enumeration in unfractionated soil and in the inner and outer parts of soil aggregates obtained by successive washings. Chemical composition and biological activity of Salvia verbenaca essential oil

Salvia verbenaca L. (syn. S. minore) is a perennial herb known in the traditional medicine of Sicily as “spaccapetri” and is used to resolve cases of kidney stones, chewing the fresh leaves or in decoction. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from aerial parts of S. verbenaca collected in Piano Battaglia (Sicily) on July 2009, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The oil was strongly characterized by fatty acids (39.5%) and carbonylic compounds (21.2%), with hexadecanoic acid (23.1%), ( Z)-9-octadecenoic acid (11.1%) and benzaldehyde (7.3%) as the main constituents. Probiotics are living microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) that are either the same as or similar to organisms found naturally in the human body and may be beneficial to health. Current researches have shown that the balance between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria is essential in order to maintain the oral health. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of glass ionomer and adhesive cements on SP expression in healthy human dental pulp. Study Design: Forty pulp samples were obtained from healthy premolars where extraction was indicated for orthodontic reasons.
