Cytotoxicity of cardiotonic steroids in sensitive and multidrug-resistant leukemia cells and the link with Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase.

Cardiotonic steroids have long been in clinical use for treatment of heart failure and are now emerging as promising agents in various diseases, especially cancer. Their main target is Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, a membrane protein involved in cellular ion homeostasis. Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase has been implicated in cancer biology by affecting several cellular events and signaling pathways in both sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cells. Magnesium concentration in saliva — an indicator of digitalis toxicity

In a prospective study salivary magnesium was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 168 patients on chronic digoxin therapy. Magnesium concentration in saliva was correlated with clinical data and plasma digoxin levels. A significant elevation in salivary magnesium concentration was caused by digoxin therapy (0.58 +/- 0.39 mmol/l, n = 93) in comparison to patients with no digitalis treatment (0.17 +/- 0.07 mmol/l, n = 35). Magnesium concentrations in saliva were significantly higher in toxic patients (1.1 +/- 0.68 mmol/l, n = 32) than in nontoxic patients. Approaching a “naked” boryl anion: amide metathesis as a route to calcium, strontium, and potassium boryl complexes

Abstract Amide metathesis has been used to generate the first structurally characterized boryl complexes of calcium and strontium, {(Me3Si)2N}M{B(NDippCH)2}(thf)n (M=Ca, n=2; M=Sr, n=3), through the reactions of the corresponding bis(amides), M{N(SiMe3)2}2(thf)2, with (thf)2Li‐ {B(NDippCH)2}. Effect of a hyperlipidic diet on lipid composition, fluidity, and (Na+-K+)ATPase activity of rat erythrocyte membranes.

Feeding rats a hyperlipidic diet in which animals were offered daily a variety of high-energy food resulted in a significant increase of serum free fatty acids and a decrease of phospholipids with respect to controls. On the contrary, there were no significant differences in erythrocyte membrane total lipid composition between the two groups. Erythrocyte membranes showed a significant decrease in saturated fatty acid content and a significant increase in (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acid content; (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids significantly decreased. All-experimental values of self-quenching cross-sections for nf states (n=5-8) of potassium atoms

All-experimental self-quenching cross-sections σ nf are reported for K(nf) states (n = 5, 6, 7, 8). The experiment was performed at varied temperatures of K vapour in a spectral cell. Time-resolved fluorescence was observed following pulsed step-wise excitation with dipole and quadrupole transitions K(4s) → K(4p) → K(nf). The values: σ 5f = 2.4 ± 1.7, σ 6f = 4.5±1.4, σ 7f = 8.1±1.8, and σ 8f = 18.2±3.0 (in units of 10−13 cm−1) were obtained from a Stern-Volmer-type plot.

Studies on the Correlation of Putrescine and Potassium Contents in the Needles of Spruce Trees

Summary The correlation between the polyamine putrescine and the nutritional element potassium was examined in Picea abies trees at numerous natural stands in Germany. The amounts of potassium and putrescine in needles was analyzed and a linear negative correlation between the K + and putrescine contents was found, which is significant in the bulk of all stands as well as in subsets. The negative correlation becomes even more pronounced when only sites situated over 600 m with trees older than 60 years are included. Representative major element compositions of clinopyroxenes and phlogopites from ultrapotassic rocks from Nangqian basin (Eastern Tibet)

Representative major element compositions (in wt%) of clinopyroxenes and phlogopites from Nangqian ultrapotassic rocks. In-situ major-element compositions of mineral phases were obtained using the JEOL JXA-8230 Electron Microprobe at ISTerre, University Grenoble Alpes. Analytical conditions were 15 kV accelerating voltage and 12 nA beam current. The ZAF procedure was applied to reduce the raw data. The microprobe was calibrated using natural and synthetic standards. An X-ray element map of a calcite-bearing aggregate was acquired using 15 kV accelerating voltage and 10 nA beam current.

Effective saccharification of lignocellulosic barley straw by mechanocatalytical pretreatment using potassium pyrosulfate as a catalyst

The catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass is attractive due to the feasible generation of valuable products such as reducing sugars which constitute the basic substrates for chemical and transportation fuel production, as well as the production of renewable hydrogen. This study shows the efficient conversion of lignocellulose, especially hemicellulose, into reducing sugars such as xylose and galactose, by mechanocatalysis using potassium pyrosulfate, K2S2O7, as an effective salt catalyst. Superoxide-driven autocatalytic dark production of hydroxyl radicals in the presence of complexes of natural dissolved organic matter and iron.

Abstract We introduced superoxide as potassium superoxide (KO2) to artificial lake water containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) without or with introduced ferric iron complexes (DOM-Fe(III)), and monitored the production rate of hydroxyl radicals as well as changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of DOM. The introduction of KO2 decreased the absorption by DOM but increased the spectral slope coefficient of DOM more with complexed ferric Fe than without it. Staphylococcal α-toxin is a 293-residue, single-chain polypeptide that spontaneously assembles into a heptameric pore in target cell membranes. To identify the pore-forming domain, substitution mutants have been produced in which single cysteine residues were introduced throughout the toxin molecule. By attaching the environmentally sensitive dye acrylodan to the sulfhydryl groups, the environment of individual amino acid side chains could be probed.
