Magnetic stimulation in the definition of eloquent cortical areas

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the physiological principles of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and focus on detailing the techniques used in TMS mapping of the motor cortex relating it to the use of TMS in the presurgical assessment of patients with epilepsy. Since the main measure of TMS is the motor potential evoked in muscles, fine delineation of the functional topography of cortex is limited mainly to the primary sensorimotor cortex. In addition, TMS might be helpful to identify language dominance. The characterization of eloquent cortical areas is important in epilepsy surgery for the planning of the resection. The effect of the pore structure and zeta potential of porous polymer monoliths on separation performance in ion-exchange mode.

Most often, in bioseparations involving charged macromolecules, the chromatographic systems have low Reynolds and high Peclet numbers. For such systems, an expression is developed and presented in this work for evaluating the throughput in polymeric monoliths where ion-exchange adsorption occurs, as a function of (i) the pressure drop along the length of the monolith, (ii) the functional form and width of the throughpore-size distribution of the monolith, and (iii) the magnitude of the zeta potential on the surface of the throughpores of the monolith. A Sustainable Energy Mix for the Aeolian Islands

The paper examines the current status of the electrical energy production in the Aeolian Islands, an Italian archipelago, composed by small island North of Sicily. Instead the availability of renewable energy sources, like wind, solar, geothermal and sea wave, these islands produce electrical energy using almost entirely fossil fuels. Starting from this initial condition, the paper proposes an energetic mix based on the available resources and focusing the attention on sea wave. An innovative device is presented in order to exploit this energy source.

In this ERP study, linear and center-embedded musical sequences are built according to two artificial grammar types in language, named finite state grammar (FSG) and phrase structure grammar (PSG). The aim is to prove if neural sources and processing mechanisms for artificial grammar settings across domains are the same. Isochronous pitch sequences were constructed by two interval categories (3rd and 6th) in upward and downward direction. FSG sequences, which have the general form ABAB in artificial grammar, are translated into “small up/small down/large up/large down”. Approach to equilibrium of a quarkonium in a quark-gluon plasma

We derive equations of motion for the reduced density matrix of a heavy quarkonium in contact with a quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium. These equations allow in particular a proper treatment of the regime when the temperature of the plasma is comparable to the binding energy of the quarkonium. These equations are used to study how the quarkonium approaches equilibrium with the plasma, and we discuss the corresponding entropy increase, or free energy decrease, depending on the temperature regime. International audience; A model of iodine chemistry in the marine boundary layer (MBL) has been used to investigate the impact of daytime coastal emissions of molecular iodine (I2). The model contains a full treatment of gas-phase iodine chemistry, combined with a description of the nucleation and growth, by condensation and coagulation, of iodine oxide nano-particles.
