Miniatures from domestic contexts in Iron age Iberia
2015
AbstractThis article reviews a set of miniatures from domestic contexts in Iron Age eastern Iberia, and interprets them in terms of their role in forging social personae. After an introduction to the historical case under consideration, the miniatures are described in terms of their typology and their contexts of provenance are outlined. Though not abundant, they tend to occur in central places in the landscape; specifically, they are often found in houses of the powerful. The vast majority are miniatures of pottery and tools, though some miniature weapons are recorded. We contend that these objects were used as a means of enculturation and for the learning of values and norms. It is no coi…
Study of archaeological ceramics from northern Bactria in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages (3rd-7th centuries AD)
2023
Des…
Definition of analytical cleaning procedures for archaeological pottery from underwater environments: The case study of samples from Baia (Naples, So…
2021
Abstract This work is focused on a multidisciplinary study of 13 pottery fragments collected in the submerged archaeological site of Baia (Naples, Italy). Founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C., this archaeological area represents one of the greatest evidences of Roman architecture and it includes ancient ruins whose structures range from maritime villas and imperial buildings. Several diagnostic tests were carried out in order to characterize the archaeological materials, their structure and properties, as well as the alteration and degradation products. Degradation forms in seawater imply not only a variation in the physico-mechanical and chemical properties of the material but als…

2013
During excavations conducted in 2011 in Grand (Vosges), a domus dating from the 2nd century and the first half of the 3rd was uncovered. Among the well-preserved vestiges a kitchen was identified with its cooking installations still in situ. These consisted of a hearth, a raised cooking platform and an oven. The kitchen was probably in use for both the residential and the servant’s quarters of the domus. The sediments linked to the use of the kitchen yielded numerous organic remains and pottery sherds dating from the 3rd century. These finds document, at least partially, the kitchenware in use, diet and waste management practices in use in this household. The kitchen stands out as a place t…

2005
The Ecuelles Charmoy site is one of the first Late Hallstatt settlements to be discovered on the edge of the plateau that dominates the Seine-Yonne confluence. In use for only a short period at the end of the 5th and during the first half of the 4th century BC, the site includes postholed buildings, storage pits and other structures in an organized domestic space. The pottery, especially the painted ware, is particularly abundant in the storage pits and constitutes a reference of local ware and its production. Also the traces of metalworking found on the site, be it the reduction of iron or the crafting of moulded bronze jewellery, renews our knowledge of the function and vocation of such a…
2010
A 1994 archaeological evaluation at Passy «Richebourg» (Yonne) brought to light a pit containing material dating to the second period of the Late Bronze Age. The typochronological analysis of this material has dated it to the Bronze final IIb (well-known period in the East of France). This work is part of a number of short papers allowing us to work on the precise dating of this second period of the Late Bronze Age in the Yonne area.
