Frames and Contradictions of the Journalistic Profession
2016
In his essay The Soul of Man Under Socialism Oscar Wilde wrote: ‘In old days men had the rack. Now they have the press’. His words reflect the noticeable power the press had acquired in society already by the end of the 19th century. Journalism began to obtain characteristics of a profession, developing from craft towards an occupation demanding certain specific qualities.
Designing patient education and counseling practices
2013
Patient education and counselling are essential constituents of interaction between a patient and a healthcare organisation. This study explores patient education and counselling practices, focusing on the opportunities of modern technology in the development of interaction with patients. With the help of a qualitative study we illustrate nurses' conceptions about the topic and discuss future opportunities. Our approach is distinctively patient centred; all discussion about the use of technology is from the point-of-view of patient's well-being and empowerment.
The local cultural sector : Reinvigorating its public functions and foundations
2016
In the Nordic tradition, public cultural policy has been endowed with an enlightening and welfarepolitical aim. Nordic cultural policies are based on an overall socio-political objective of furthering the empowerment of the individual, universal enlightenment ("Bildung") and the continued democratisation of society (Nielsen 2003). Locally, an important actor is a municipal cultural sector that is one specialized sector in a municipality's administration. Cultural and art institutions (such as libraries, museums, theatres) are working under the cultural sector administration, although they might sometimes have their own separate administration. According to Gray (2002, pp. 82-83) the arts as…
Measuring Managers’ Perception of Innovation in the Romanian Hospitality Industry
2013
Abstract In the current economic environment, innovation is a common characteristic of both services and manufacturing enterprises. In the tourism sector innovation has become compulsory in the quest to achieve long term competitiveness. However, innovation is seldom assessed even after being integrated in the daily routine of tourism enterprises. The purpose of this article is to study the degree to which innovation is implemented in the Romanian hospitality industry by analyzing hotel managers’ perception on various types of innovations. The results offer an image on how innovative the hospitality industry is and on how innovation is fostered and achieved.
Checks and balances and international openness
1991
In the course of a long digression within his famous inspection of Plato’s political philosophy, Karl Popper (1945: 121) argues that “the problem of politics” is the following: “How can we so organize political institutions that bad or incompetent rulers can be prevented from doing too much damage?” Popper’s answer is: “the theory of checks and balances”, which he defines as the striving to establish “institutional control of the rulers by balancing their powers against other powers” (122). From that general approach to “the problem of politics”, it follows that democracy is definitely not the rule of the majority, or the sovereignty of the people (a conception that entails various paradoxe…
Developing empowering health counseling measurement
2006
Abstract Objective This article describes the derivation of an instrument (Empowering Speech Practices Scale) for assessing the empowerment of dyadic counseling, the evaluation of the validity and reliability of the ESPS and the results acquired with the instrument from hospital counseling. Methods ESPS was constructed on the basis of empowerment theory and foregoing conversation analytic research. Nurses and patients assessed the same counseling session by way of parallel statements. Structure and reliability of the scale were evaluated with Cronbach alpha, percentage of agreement, factor analysis and logistic regression analysis. Results According to these preliminary results, ESPS descri…
A randomized controlled trial of a power brush/irrigator/mouthrinse routine on plaque and gingivitis reduction in orthodontic patients
2018
ABSTRACT Objectives: To assess plaque and gingivitis reduction in orthodontic patients after 4 weeks' use of an oscillating-rotating power brush, irrigator, and mouthrinse. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized, examiner-blind, clinical trial comparing plaque and gingivitis outcomes for an experimental power brush/irrigator/mouthrinse oral hygiene routine vs a dental prophylaxis followed by regular manual brushing (positive control). Fifty-one participants with fixed orthodontic appliances in the upper and lower jaw and a minimum of 15 gingival bleeding sites were randomly assigned to experimental or positive control treatment. Both groups were instructed to use their products at lea…
Social Media's Impact on Healthcare Services
2015
Abstract Taking into account the changes in recent years (the increased access to internet, the existence of affordable mobile devices and the ease of communication due to the growth of social media) it seems natural to investigate social media's impact on healthcare services. Furthermore, studies conducted worldwide show their benefits, both in terms of the patient, as well as the healthcare providers’. However, Romania's healthcare system faces serious problems on basic aspects. Thus, using secondary data, this paper aims to present the existing concerns about the impact of social media on healthcare services and to discuss to what extent they are applicable also in Romania.
A prototypal PCB board for the EMI characterization of SiC-based innovative switching devices
2020
In this paper, a preliminary PCB board for the electromagnetic interference (EMI) characterization of innovative silicon-carbide (SiC) based switching devices is presented. Packaging technological issues can determine hurdles in the high-frequency switching and high power regime where wide band gap semiconductors are intended today for Electric Vehicle (EV) applications. In particular, the parasitic inductances that emerge in such devices, must be assessed, by using e.g. EMI techniques. In this specific case, the EMI characterization is supposed to be carried out in a semi-anechoic chamber, available at the University of Palermo (UNIPA), to assess the electromagnetic disturbances according …
Life Cycle Assessment of repurposed electric vehicle batteries: an adapted method based on modelling energy flows
2018
Abstract After their first use in electric vehicles (EVs), the residual capacity of traction batteries can make them valuable in other applications. Although reusing EV batteries remains an undeveloped market, second-use applications of EV batteries are in line with circular economy principles and the waste management hierarchy. Although substantial environmental benefits are expected from reusing traction batteries, further efforts are needed in data collection, modelling the life-cycle stages and calculating impact indicators to propose a harmonized and adapted life-cycle assessment (LCA) method. To properly assess the environmental benefits and drawbacks of using repurposed EV batteries …
