Defining right ventricular dysfunction by the use of echocardiography in normotensive patients with pulmonary embolism

2020

Although the prognostic value of various echocardiographic parameters of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) was reported in normotensive patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), there is no generally accepted definition of RVD.The aim of the study was to compare echocardiographic parameters for the prediction of an adverse 30‑day outcome and create an optimal definition of RVD.                                     Patients and methods: Echocardiographic parameters including the right ventricular to left ventricular diameter ratio (RV to LV ratio) and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to predict PE‑related mortality, hemodynamic collapse, or rescue thrombolysis within th…

1177 The additive prognostic value of end-systolic pressure-volume relation by CMR in patients with with known or suspected coronary artery disease

2020

Abstract Background The variation between rest and peak stress end-systolic pressure-volume relation is an afterload-independent index of left ventricular contractility. This index is easily obtained during routine stress echocardiography but can be derived also during a stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) exam, that is the gold standard for the quantification of biventricular volumes. Purpose The aim of this study was to assess for the first time the prognostic value ofdelta rest-stress ESPVR (DESPVR) by dipyridamole stress-CMR in patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods One hundred and sixty-six consecutive patients (37 females, main age 61.96 ± 1…

ATD perimetry in glaucoma and ocular hypertensive patients. A preliminar study

2007

Purpose: The new ATD perimetry assesses contrast sentivity thresholds for the three afferent sensory pathways of the visual system. Our aim is to compare contrast sensitivity to stimuli with different spatio-temporal frequencies in glaucomatous (G) and ocular hypertensive (OHT) subjects. Methods: Twenty three G and OHT subjects were selected from the ophthalmic clinic, all subjects signed an informed consent. Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of G or OHT, normal Farnsworth-Munsell color test, ametropia less than 6 D, visual acuity over 20/30, absence of previous ocular surgery and experience in perimetry. Twenty locations and the fovea were evaluated in a 60o x 40o fovea-centered field. Eig…

Both poor cardiorespiratory and weak muscle fitness are related to a high concentration of oxidized low-density lipoprotein lipids

2011

Good physical fitness is associated with favorable serum lipids. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) could be even more atherogenic than serum lipids. We studied the association of ox-LDL and serum lipids with physical fitness. Healthy young (mean age 25 years) men (n=846) underwent maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and muscle fitness index (MFI) tests and completed a leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) questionnaire. Age (ANCOVA1), age+waist circumference+systolic blood pressure+fasting blood glucose+smoking (ANCOVA3) were used as covariates. The groups with the lowest VO(2max), MFI and LTPA had 23%, 16% and 8% higher concentrations of ox-LDL than the groups with the highest VO(2max…

Correction to: One Year of Dapaglifozin Add-On Therapy Ameliorates Surrogate Indexes of Insulin Resistance and Adiposity in Patients with Type 2 Diab…

2021

This study investigates the effects of dapagliflozin on the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), product of triglycerides and glucose (TyG) and triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). In this real-life study, dapaglifozin was added to metformin alone (group 1, no. 42) or insulin plus metformin (group 2, no. 58) in 100 T2D patients. In group 1, after 6 months of dapaglifozin addition, a significant decrease in BMI (p < 0.001), waist circumference (WC) (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p = 0.009), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p = 0.012), mean fasting blood glucose (FBG), post-breakfast glucose…

Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

2010

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin that affects approximately 1.5 individuals per 100,000 every year; usually, these individuals are between 55 and 75 years of age [1]. ALS causes progressive weakness of voluntary muscle groups, including respiratory ones, and respiratory failure or pneumonia related to respiratory muscle weakness is the most frequent cause of death.

Hypertension in Children and Adolescents

2019

During the last few decades, hypertension in children and adolescents has gained ground in cardiovascular medicine, thanks to the progress made in several areas of pathophysiological and clinical research. The prevalence in school-aged children appears to be increasing, perhaps as a result of the increased prevalence of obesity in the last years. Despite evidence of an increasing prevalence of hypertension in the young, the consequences of early onset hypertension are poorly established and often overlooked. In children hypertension can be caused by multiple conditions, and therefore it is warranted to consider a wide range of differential diagnoses and to search for definable causes of hyp…

Carotid ultrasound is useful for the cardiovascular risk stratification in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa.

2018

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease which has been associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes. Adequate stratification of the CV risk is an issue of major importance in patients with HS. To analyze the usefulness of carotid ultrasound (US) assessment for the CV disease risk stratification compared with a traditional score, the Framingham risk score (FRS), in a series of patients with HS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 60 patients with HS without history of CV events, diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease. Information on CV risk factors was collected and the FRS was calculated. Thus, the patients were…

Presence of thyroid hormones in ascidian larvae and their involvement in metamorphosis

2001

In this study we investigated the presence and localization of thyroxine in Ciona intestinalis larvae and its involvement in metamorphosis. To date, the mechanisms regulating the metamorphosis of ascidians remain largely unknown. In vivo treatment of swimming larvae with exogenous L-thyroxine and thiourea, and in vitro experiments utilizing high performance liquid chromatography, radioimmunoassay, and immunoperoxidase staining demonstrate the presence of thyroxine at the larval stage. This suggests that this hormone may participate in the control of metamorphosis and thus play a different role from that observed in adults.

European Society of Hypertension practice guidelines for home blood pressure monitoring.

2010

Self-monitoring of blood pressure by patients at home (home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM)) is being increasingly used in many countries and is well accepted by hypertensive patients. Current hypertension guidelines have endorsed the use of HBPM in clinical practice as a useful adjunct to conventional office measurements. Recently, a detailed consensus document on HBPM was published by the European Society of Hypertension Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring. However, in daily practice, briefer documents summarizing the essential recommendations are needed. It is also accepted that the successful implementation of clinical guidelines in routine patient care is dependent on their acc…
