Robotic transanal total mesorectal excision: Is the future now?
2021
Total mesorectal excision (TME) is the standard surgical treatment for the curative radical resection of rectal cancers. Minimally invasive TME has been gaining ground favored by the continuous technological advancements. New procedures, such as transanal TME (TaTME), have been introduced to overcome some technical limitations, especially in low rectal tumors, obese patients, and/or narrow pelvis. The earliest TaTME reports showed promising results when compared with the conventional laparoscopic TME. However, recent publications raised concerns regarding the high rates of anastomotic leaks or local recurrences observed in national series. Robotic TaTME (R-TaTME) has been proposed as a nove…
Can Emotional Competence Be Taught in Higher Education? A Randomized Experimental Study of an Emotional Intelligence Training Program Using a Multime…
2018
Since the introduction of the Bologna Process, the goal of education has been not only to acquire technical skills but also to master other skills, such as teamwork, effective communication skills, time optimization, and the ability to manage one's emotions. The present work describes a program to develop emotional intelligence in higher education, the “Emotional Intelligence Training Program,” with a multimethodological approach that offers the opportunity for university students to develop their emotional intelligence. A total of 192 higher education students participated in this educational experience. Of the participants, 66% were women, and 34% were men; the average age of the sample w…

Expanding Capabilities for Epistemic Justice Through Social Innovation: The Case of Business and Management Courses in UNIMINUTO, Colombia
2020
The chapter addresses the consideration and development of students’ competencies for social innovation in higher education by generating spaces of engagement with local communities. We combine concepts from the capability approach and epistemic injustice to address this topic and ask these specific questions: which epistemic capabilities can be generated in students when engaging with local communities in fostering social innovation processes, and how? And, how are these processes contributing to challenging epistemic injustice? To address these questions, we propose an original framework connecting ideas from Sen and Fricker and address the specific case of six pilot courses in UNIMINUTO …

The Role of Curriculum Theory in Contemporary Higher Education Research and Practice
2017
In the light of recent debates on the possible issues in curriculum studies, formulated particularly in the field of sociology of education, this chapter discusses the role and the importance of curriculum theories in higher education. Focusing on the historical and the conceptual roots of curriculum theory approaches, the argument is that the dispute and the separation between normative and critical roles of curriculum theories are important to overcome in today’s competency-based and outcome-focused context of higher education. Basil Bernstein’s ideas on the vital role of knowledge are discussed in relation to the origins of the so-called crisis in curriculum theories. It is suggested tha…

Anthropology as a natural science

On the basis of materials collected by the research project System Analysis of Anthropology (SAA) the author discusses problems of the structure and relationships of biological anthropology. o (1) In the eastern, southeastern and southern European countries anthropology is strictly defined as natural science (source: conversation lexicons); also in Germany and some neighbouring countries other anthropologies, particularly the philosophical one, exist and have increased in recent years; a third group is represented by the Anglo-Saxon anthropology which comprises social and cultural as well as physical (Figure 1). The proportion of physical anthropological papers in anthropological periodical…
