Strategies for Building eHealth Infrastructures

2017

This chapter presents a cross-case analysis of the eleven empirical chapters of the book. We discuss the six e-prescription cases and the five patient-oriented eHealth cases in terms of the initiatives’ scope, starting point, and motivation, and then, we turn to observed strategies towards the installed base for the two types of infrastructures. E-prescription is relatively well-defined in terms of functionality and there are clear interdependencies with existing healthcare applications (e.g. Electronic Health Record systems and Pharmacy systems) as well as with established practices for prescribing, dispensing and reimbursement of drugs. The e-prescription cases illustrate a variety of app…

Process-oriented knowledge system for health professionals as a tool for transition to hospital process orientation

2016

AbstractHospitals face increasing pressure to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and guarantee a quality of services. This is perhaps the main reason why hospital process orientation (HPO) – a view on a hospital being a group of processes organized around patients with similar needs is a growing field of interest among hospital managers and researchers. The theoretical research of the content of hospital activities was performed in order to determine the main distinct characteristics in hospital organization that determine the specifics for a process-oriented knowledge system. A conceptual proposal of a technological tool was elaborated taking into account the limited control of hospital man…

The Connectivity of Information for the Integrated Reporting

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the guiding principle of connectivity of information which the Integrated Reporting Framework presents as a way of translating the integrated thinking into action. In doing so, the chapter moves from the analysis of the main reports that are a source of information for Integrated Reporting, defining them as “partial” reports because they represent only a part of the comprehensive value creation story. The ways in which these reports are aggregated and/or integrated during the process of construction of an Integrated Report have the potential to affect the level of connectivity of information. In addressing these issues, the chapter proposes th…

Impact of Cloud Computing Technologies on Pricing Models of Software Firms – Insights from Finland

2014

In this paper we study the changes in the pricing models of software firms that use cloud computing technologies as part of their products and services. This paper presents findings from 324 responses to a questionnaire survey on how pricing model elements of software firms have changed as a result of adopting hardware virtualization, multi-tenancy, online delivery and configurability. The findings suggest that Software-as-a-Service firms – making use of the cloud computing technologies – are generally simplifying their pricing model, increasing the use of usage-based pricing, reducing the customers’ influence and unifying their pricing across customers. These changes occur together with st…

Putting documents into their work context in document analysis

2000

In trying to achieve document standardization the goal is to find more effective, consistent, and standardized ways to utilize information technology. The specification and implementation of document standards may take several years requiring a profound analysis and understanding of document management practices. Document standardization does not concern documents only: it concerns workers, their work, business partners, and future systems as well. In this paper we discuss two ways of describing the work context of documents: process modelling and life cycle modelling. In process modelling, documents are regarded as resources produced and used in inter- or intra-organizational business proc…

Value co-creation process and measurement in 4.0 SMEs: An exploratory research in a B2B marketing innovation context

2021

The purpose of this exploratory research is to contribute to the lack of empirical research exploring techniques and protocols that can be used to measure the level of value obtained from using these technologies in the various marketing processes and in a business-to-business (B2B) context. By doing so, firms operating in fast changing dynamic environments can develop the right means to continuously adapt, integrate, reconfigure, and redeploy resources and capabilities to become more competitive and disruptive in their offerings. The phenomenon of interest is described by applying a case study qualitative approach to three 4.0 companies which use virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR)…

From Strategy to Code: Achieving Strategical Alignment in Software Development Projects Through Conceptual Modelling

2021

In this article we propose S2C, a strategy-to-code methodological approach to integrate organisational, business process, and information system modelling levels to support strategic alignment in software development. Through a model-driven approach and under the Conceptual-Model Programming paradigm, the proposal supports the semi-automatic generation of working software, as well as traceability among the modelling levels. Via a working example, we illustrate how strategic definitions can be traced into specific software components by the integration of three modelling methods: Lite*, for modelling strategic reaction to external influences, Communication Analysis, for business process mode…

Benchmarking the port services: a customer oriented proposal

2004

In recent years, ports have experienced a period of significant growth and development along with intense inter‐port rivalry as a consequence of intermodality and hinterland development. It is therefore vital that port management bodies define and implement suitable strategies. This paper aims to adapt the benchmarking technique to the sphere of ports. Compares the activity of a port with that of its competitors, which is considered to be excellent. This is a strategic approach where consideration of the needs of the client, shipping lines and export‐import companies is the axis of the benchmarking process.
