Prospects of herbivore egg-killing plant defenses for sustainable crop protection

Abstract Due to a growing demand of food production worldwide, new strategies are suggested to allow for sustainable production of food with minimal effects on natural resources. A promising alternative to the application of chemical pesticides is the implementation of crops resistant to insect pests. Plants produce compounds that are harmful to a wide range of attackers, including insect pests; thus, exploitation of their natural defense system can be the key for the development of pest‐resistant crops. An assessment was performed regarding the accuracy of various types of data deposited in the Barcode of Life Data system (BOLD) related to the true bug family Cydnidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera). Taxonomic nomenclature and classification, identification reliability, and the correctness of the data provided in the "Taxon description" were analyzed and commented on with respect to both available versions of the BOLD system, i.e. version 3 and beta version 4. Numerous mistakes in taxonomy, the relevance of the taxa names, and species misidentifications in BOLD version 3 were found and, more importantly, similar errors were detected in BOLD version 4 as well. Gamma Irradiation and Fermentation

This chapter discusses the applications of gamma irradiation technology for food safety, its nutritional implications, and its involvement in fermentation processes. Gamma irradiation has become an alternative technology for food sterilization due to its nonthermal character, thus replacing the conventional heating processes. Several driving forces are propelling the need of γ-irradiation forward for food applications. Besides food preservation, γ-irradiation is taking place for novel applications, especially involving the enhancement of food fermentation processes, by directly irradiating the medium, or generating performant genetically modified strains.

Non-linear biological responses to disturbance: consequences on population dynamics

Abstract We assessed how non-linear biological responses to environmental noise, or “noise filtering”, impact the spectra of density-dependent population dynamics, and the correlation between noise and population dynamics. The noise was assumed to affect population growth rate in a discrete-time population model by Hassell [J. Anim. Ecol. 44 (1975) 283–295] where the population growth rate was linked to the environment with an optimum type filter. When compared to unfiltered noise, the filtered noise can distort the stationary distribution of population values. Is the impact of environmental noise visible in the dynamics of age-structured populations?

Climate change has ignited lively research into its impact on various population–level processes. The research agenda in ecology says that some of the fluctuations in population size are accountable for by the external noise (e.g. weather) modulating the dynamics of populations. We obeyed the agenda by assuming population growth after a resource–limited Leslie matrix model in an age–structured population. The renewal process was disturbed by superimposing noise on the development of numbers in one or several age groups. What a line can say : Investigating the semiotic potential of the connecting line in data visualizations

The line is a graphical element widely used in data visualizations, its purpose often being to signal a connection between other visual elements. Based on social semiotic theory, this article investigates what semiotic functions connecting lines can have and how these functions can be related to variations in form. The results show that, in addition to the basic function of connecting elements, such lines can also indicate the level of certainty, direct the viewer to read the information either as a narrative or a conceptual claim, indicate patterns of cohesion, and regulate the viewer’s position. These findings allow for further empirical research on the formation of visual conventions.
