The ocular fundus is the only area of human body where vascular system is visible using relatively simple instrumentation. Furthermore, there is medical suggestive evidence of a direct relationship between certain measures of vascular characteristics in the ocular fundus (arteriolar and venular calibers and focal arteriolar narrowing) and cardiovascular diseases. Intertwining operators between different Hilbert spaces: connection with frames

In this paper we generalize a strategy recently proposed by the author concerning intertwining operators. In particular we discuss the possibility of extending our previous results in such a way to construct (almost) isospectral self-adjoint operators living in different Hilbert spaces. Many examples are discussed in details. Many of them arise from the theory of frames in Hilbert spaces, others from the so-called g-frames.

Abstract Powered lower-limb prostheses presented in the previous chapter require a natural and easy-to-use interface for communicating amputee’s motor intention in order to select the appropriate motor program in a given context or simply to commute from an active (powered) to a passive mode of functioning. To be accepted by amputees, such an interface should (1) not put additional cognitive load on the end-user, (2) be reliable and (3) be minimally invasive. The gap between informal functional specifications and the resulting implementation in the chosen programming language is notably a source of errors in embedded systems design. In this paper, we discuss a methodology and a software platform aimed at coping with this issue in programming resource-constrained wireless sensor network nodes (WSNs). Off-line Programming and simulation for automatic robot control software generation

In this paper an off-line programming approach for welding robots is presented. The approach is based on the integration of a software tool for robot simulation and an user-friendly interface for automatic generation of the control program. The user can graphically arrange the components in a robotic work-cell and simulate the movements and operations of robotic arms before converting motions and operating sequences in controller-specific tasks. This methodology guarantees high level of flexibility of the robotic system when high variety of work-pieces needs to be welded. The approach has been implemented and tested in a real welding work-cell.
Matlab-based interface for the simultaneous acquisition of force measures and Doppler ultrasound muscular images

This paper tackles the design of a graphical user interface (GUI) based on Matlab (MathWorks Inc., MA), a worldwide standard in the processing of biosignals, which allows the acquisition of muscular force signals and images from a ultrasound scanner simultaneously. Thus, it is possible to unify two key magnitudes for analyzing the evolution of muscular injuries: the force exerted by the muscle and section/length of the muscle when such force is exerted. This paper describes the modules developed to finally show its applicability with a case study to analyze the functioning capacity of the shoulder rotator cuff.

We consider transformations (performed by general recursive operators) mapping recursive functions into recursive functions. These transformations can be considered as mapping sets of recursive functions into sets of recursive functions. A transformation is said to be preserving the identification type I, if the transformation always maps I-identifiable sets into I-identifiable sets.

AbstractPhysical models for equation solving typically lack feedback regarding their appropriate use. Such feedback is possible in virtual environments and could be implemented in hybrid models. Based on an epistemological analysis, this article presents a touch gesture as a way for users to signal they want to divide both sides of an equation and a design for feedback on the use of this so-called ‘division gesture’. The design is investigated by contrasting a case study, in which students used an app with the division gesture, with a preparatory study where students had to perform corresponding actions on physical manipulatives. A Comparison of Special Bonding Techniques for Transmission and Distribution Cables

In this paper, a review of the existing special bonding techniques for medium voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) cables is presented. Special bonding techniques have the purpose of reducing sheath currents, thereby limiting copper losses and the reduction of the ampacity of cables. The authors present a literature review to identify various bonding techniques and how these have evolved over the years thanks to new technologies. Simulations of the most used techniques have been performed in Matlab/Simulink, to compare their strengths and drawbacks.
