Kant deemed a theory of life impossible, while Goethe believed that to understand life we should consider it as a whole. The history of Biology is replete with theoretical confrontations, which—dialectically speaking—are usually resolved by their integration in explanatory theories of greater scope. The major confrontation in Biology is between analytic and synthetic conceptions . Kant and Goethe would probably be astounded to see how the analytical conception has helped provide so many details of the cellular world, sufficient to approach the cell as a whole in the way required by the synthetic tradition. I call this “the realisation of Goethe’s dream”.

Improved tau polarisation measurement

Using 22 pb−1 of data collected at LEP in 1992 on the peak of the Z resonance, the ALEPH collaboration has measured the polarisation of the tau leptons decaying into $$ev\bar v, \mu v\bar v$$ ,πν, ρν and a1 ν from their individual decay product distributions. The measurement of the tau polarisation as a function of the production polar angle yields the two parametersN τ andN e, where, in terms of the axial and vector couplingsg Al andg Vl,N l=2g Vl gAl/(g Vl 2 +g 2 ). Understanding the limits of self-control: Positive affect moderates the impact of task switching on consecutive self-control performance

Performing consecutive self-control tasks typically leads to deterioration in self-control performance. This effect can be explained within the strength model of self-control or within a cognitive control perspective. Both theoretical frameworks differ in their predictions with regard to the impact of affect and task characteristics on self-control deterioration within a two-task paradigm. Whereas the strength model predicts decrements in self-control performance whenever both tasks require a limited resource, under a cognitive control perspective, decrements should only occur when people switch to a different response conflict in the second task.
