Modern Strategies in the Prevention of Implant-Associated Infections
2005
The application of medical devices either for temporary or permanent use has become an indispensible part of almost all fields of medicine. However, foreign bodies are associated with a substantial risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Implant-associated infections significantly contribute to the still increasing problem of nosocomial infections. To reduce the incidence of such infections, specific guidelines providing evidence-based recommendations and comprising both technological and nontechnological strategies for prevention have been established. Strict adherence to hygienic rules during insertion or implantation of the device are aspects of particular importance. Besides such basi…
Medicated hydrogels of hyaluronic acid derivatives for use in orthopedic field.
2013
Physical hydrogels have been obtained from hyaluronic acid derivatized with polylactic acid in the presence or in the absence of polyethylene glycol chains. They have been extemporarily loaded with antibacterial agents, such as vancomycin and tobramycin. These medicated hydrogels have been used to coat titanium disks (chosen as simple model of orthopedic prosthesis) and in vitro studies in simulated physiological fluid have been performed as a function of time and for different drug loading and polymer concentration values. Sterilization process performed on the hydrogels does not change their rheological behavior and release properties as well as the chemical structure of starting copolyme…
Molecular genetics of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms on indwelling medical devices.
2005
Staphylococcus epidermidis is an opportunistic pathogen associated with foreign body infections and nosocomial sepsis. The pathogenicity of S. epidermidis is mostly due to its ability to colonize indwelling polymeric devices and form a thick, multilayered biofilm. Biofilm formation is a major problem in treating S. epidermidis infection as biofilms provide significant resistance to antibiotics and to components of the innate host defenses. Various cell surface associated bacterial factors play a role in adherence and accumulation of the biofilm such as the polysaccharide intercellular adhesin and the autolysin AtlE. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that global regulators such as the …
Jaw in a day: Osseointegration of the implants in the patient’s leg before reconstructive surgery of a maxilla with ameloblastoma. A 4-year follow-up…
2021
Background To describe a clinical case of a cancer patient who underwent ablative tumor surgery, including treatment planning, surgical resection and subsequent implant rehabilitation. Case report A 61-year-old patient with a diagnosis of multicystic follicular ameloblastoma in the maxilla, in which it was necessary a multidisciplinary approach and two surgical steps. In the first surgical intervention osseointegrated implants (OII) were placed in the fibula, until their osseointegration period of 8 weeks was complete. Afterwards, in the second surgery, the micro-vascularized free fibular flap bearing the implants was transplanted into the oral cavity, in order to perform simultaneous recon…
Ergebnisse nach Implantation einer Worst Iris Claw Lens zur Korrektur der hohen Myopie
2001
Fragestellung.
First-in-man permanent laparoscopic fixation free obliteration of inguinal hernia defect with the 3D dynamic responsive implant ProFlor-E®. Case repo…
2020
Abstract Introduction In the case of inguinal hernia recurrence after primary anterior repair, international guidelines strongly suggest a posterior laparoscopic approach. The 3D dynamic-responsive prosthesis for inguinal hernia repair ProFlor-E® has recently been introduced to the market. The present report describes the results of the first-in-man laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair carried out with ProFlor-E®. Presentation of case A 71-year-old male Caucasian presented with recurrent inguinal hernia after primary anterior repair. A fixation free TAPP procedure with ProFlor-E® was planned. Implant delivery and placement to obliterate the defect was quick and safe. Postoperatively, startin…
Speech rehabilitation during the first year after total laryngectomy
2012
Background Gaining a new voice is one of the major aims after total laryngectomy. The objective of this study was to describe the process and results of speech rehabilitation during the first year after surgery. Methods Speech intelligibility was measured 6 months (n = 273) and 1 year (n = 225) after total laryngectomy. Results Objective (23.4 to 47.5 points, p < .0001) and subjective (51.6 to 64.7 points, p < .0001) speech intelligibility improved between 6 months and 1 year after total laryngectomy. Patients who used tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) had the best results in speech intelligibility 6 months and 1 year after total laryngectomy. In all, 12% of the patients who used TEP initial…
Schlingenplastiken in der Therapie der weiblichen Harninkontinenz
2001
Traditionally, women with type III stress incontinence (intrinsic sphincter deficiency) are treated with sling procedures, which have undergone multiple modifications during the last 90 years regarding surgical approach, sling course, and materials. The latest variation of the established sling concept is the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure. The choice of sling material influences the postoperative complication rate and reveals a conflict between unrestricted availability (alloplastic material) and optimal tissue compatibility (autologous material). Although valid information about the surgical outcome of sling procedures is rare, at least some evidence-based conclusions may be dr…
Acute aortic dissection
2011
An acute aortic syndrome with simultaneous presence of a penetrating aortic ulcer, an intramural haematoma, a thoracic aortic dissection and an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture has not previously been reported. Herein, we describe our experience with a patient treated by endovascular means with an 8-year follow-up.
Toothguide Training Box for Dental Color Choice Training
2011
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of the Toothguide Training Box (TTB) for training dental students in color identification. The seventy-four volunteers who took part in the study attended a seminar on the Vita 3D Master Guide (MG) and the TTB system as well as a demonstration of the equipment before training began. At the end of the training they took the TTB final test. In addition, the participants were asked to recognize ten MG shade tabs in a blind manner before and after TTB training. The training times and percentages of correct answers were compared using the paired t-test. Variations in scores with training times and percentages of correct answers before and after t…
