Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Stress Ulcer Bleeding Prophylaxis with Proton Pump Inhibitors, H2 Receptor Antagonists

2012

Abstract Objectives Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) present varying pharmacological efficacy in preventing stress ulcer bleeding (SUB) in intensive care units. The literature also reports disparate rates of ventilator-assisted pneumonia (VAP) as side effects of these treatments. We compared the cost-effectiveness of these two prophylactic pharmacological options. Methods We constructed a decision tree with a 60-day time horizon for patients at high risk for developing SUB, receiving either PPIs or H2RAs. For each treatment strategy, patients could be in one of three states of health: SUB, VAP, or no complication. Contemporary, clinically relevant probabilit…

Future hypernuclear physics at MAMI-C and PANDA-GSI

2005

Hypernuclei represent the first steps towards an extension of the periodic system into the sector of strangeness and thus add a third dimension to our evolving picture of nuclei. They provide a large variety of new and exciting perspectives ranging from new dynamical symmetries in hypernuclei spectra, non-mesonic weak decays, and the interplay of the quark-exchange and meson-exchange aspects of strong baryon–baryon forces in the flavor SU(3) world. Furthermore, double hypernuclei may provide a doorway towards exotic quark states. In the near future, electroproduction experiments at TJNAF and MAMI-C will add more detailed information on the structure of single hypernuclei states. On the long…

Chiroptical Phenomena in Reverse Micelles: The Case of (1R,2S)-Dodecyl (2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium Bromide (DMEB)

2014

(1R,2S)-Dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB) aggregates dispersed in carbon tetrachloride have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at various surfactant concentration and water-to-surfactant molar ratio. Experimental data indicate that, even at the lowest investigated concentration and in absence of added water, DMEB molecules associate in supramolecular assemblies. At higher DMEB concentration the aggregates can confine water molecules, making it plausible to think that DMEB form reverse micelles and that water molecules are quite uniformly dist…

Gold(I) compounds with lansoprazole-type ligands

2014

A number of gold(I) complexes containing the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) lansoprazole and its reduced precursor 2-((3-methyl-4-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)pyridin-2-yl)methylthio)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole have been synthesized and their biological effects have been evaluated in human cancer and nontumorigenic cells in vitro. The lansoprazole-based compounds appear to act through a V-H+-ATPase-mediated mechanism.

X-ray Crystal Structure of Woodinine and Conformational Analysis by Semiempirical and 1H-NMR Methods

1997

The mol. structure of (-)-woodinine (I), a carboline-based alkaloid with antibacterial and antimycobacterial activities, was investigated by X-ray crystallog., NMR, and semiempirical quantum chem. methods. The X-ray crystal structure of I showed the indole ring in the expected planar conformation, the pyrrolidine ring in an envelope conformation, and a weak intramol. hydrogen bond between the pyrrolidine nitrogen and the proton of the indole nitrogen. NMR expts. indicated that this hydrogen bond is not present in soln. and that further differences exist between the crystal and the soln. structures of I. By semiempirical quantum chem. methods, different local energy min. conformations of I, …

Treatment of patients with duodenal ulcer positive for helicobacter pylori infection: ranitidine or omeprazole associated with colloidal bismuth subc…

1996

Abstract This study evaluated treatment of patients affected with duodenal ulcer positive for Helicobacter pylori . We compared patients treated with ranitidine plus amoxicillin plus colloidal bismuth subcitrate (n = 20) with patients treated with omeprazole plus amoxicillin plus colloidal bismuth subcitrate (n = 20) with regard to: (1) healing of duodenal ulcer; (2) eradication of H pylori ; and (3) recurrence of ulcer. Baseline and follow-up for 24 months were performed through clinical, laboratory, and endoscopic tests. The ulcer healing rate was 95% in the ranitidine group and 100% in the omeprazole group; the H pylori eradication rate was 90% and 95%, respectively. During follow-up, on…

Tetradihydrobenzoquinonate and Tetrachloranilate Zr(IV) Complexes: Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Phase Transition and Open-Framework Behavior for …

2013

The molecular complexes K4[Zr(DBQ)4] and K 4[Zr(CA)4], where DBQ2- and CA2- stand respectively for deprotonated dihydroxybenzoquinone and chloranilic acid, are reported. The anionic metal complexes consist of Zr(IV) surrounded by four O,O-chelating ligands. Besides the preparation and crystal structures for the two complexes, we show that in the solid state the DBQ complex forms a 3-D open framework (with 22% accessible volume) that undergoes a crystal-to-crystal phase transition to a compact structure upon guest molecule release. This process is reversible. In the presence of H2O, CO2, and other small molecules, the framework opens and accommodates guest molecules. CO2 adsorption isotherms…

Horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of chlorophyll a with hydrogen peroxide

2010

Horseradish peroxidase was verified to catalyze, without any phenol, the hydrogen peroxide oxidation of chlorophyll a (Chl a), solubilized with Triton X-100. The 13(2)(S) and 13(2)(R) diastereomers of 13(2)-hydroxyChl a were characterized as major oxidation products (ca. 60%) by TLC on sucrose, UV-vis, (1)H, and (13)C NMR spectra, as well as fast-atom bombardment MS. A minor amount of the 15(2)-methyl, 17(3)-phytyl ester of Mg-unstable chlorin was identified on the basis of its UV-vis spectrum and reactivity with diazomethane, which converted it to the 13(1),15(2)-dimethyl, 17(3)-phytyl ester of Mg-purpurin 7. The side products (ca. 10%) were suggested to include the 17(3)-phytyl ester of M…
