2020

Purpose of review Predatory publishing poses a serious educational end ethical threat to the credibility of science. The aim of this review is to discuss the main features of this deceptive open-access model, its potential consequences and relevance for the whole scientific community. Hybrid Engagement: Discourses and Scenarios of Entrepreneurial Journalism

2018

Although the challenge posed by social media and the participatory turn concerns culture and values at the very heart of journalism, journalists have been reluctant to adopt participatory values and practices. To encourage audience participation and to offer journalism that is both trustworthy and engaging, journalists of the future may embrace a hybrid practice of journalistic objectivity and audience-centred dialogue. As innovative and experimental actors, entrepreneurial journalism outlets can perform as forerunners of such a culture. By analysing discourses in the “About Us” pages of 41 entrepreneurial journalism outlets, the article examines the emerging journalistic ethos of entrepren…

School Boards in Finland

2014

In today’s global societal development, Finland in many ways seems to be an outlier relying on policies, the goals, contents and enactment of which differ from those of many other countries. Furthermore, the policies Finland relies on appear to provide outlying results concerning both the education system and the society (Risku M, Ital J Sociol Educ, forthcoming; Risku M, Kanervio P, The Finnish superintendent. In: Nir A (ed) The educational superintendent: between trust and regulation: an international perspective. Lambert Academic Publishing, New York, 2014). The many-sided outlying character of Finland makes it an interesting case of research.

Innovations in savings and credit groups: evidence from Kenya

2007

Accepted version of an article published in the journal : Small Enterprise Development Copyright Practical Action Publishing: http://practicalaction.org/publishing/sed_journal This article reports from a church based Savings and Credit Groups (SCG) project in Kenya called Tuinuane. The project builds upon the Worth program of PACT, but has added some interesting and innovative features allowing country-wide outreach: 1) It piggybacks on a church. 2) Field officers have been avoided. Instead group leaders are screened and trained through a detailed implementation plan. 3) It makes active use of mobile phones in planning, monitoring and follow-up efforts. The attachment to the church as well …

A group of Spanish leading teache…

Bhaskar’s Theory of Publishing and Its Contribution to Theorizing (Evolving New Forms of) Educational Media

2021

Enterprises which are usually categorized as educational publishers increasingly develop and market products like learning platforms. Such products are at least to a considerable extent pieces of software rather than products based on content in the sense of texts, images, and maybe moving images or sounds (which typically constitute products of the media industries). Michael Bhaskar’s The Content Machine. Towards a Theory of Publishing (2013) represents one of the most comprehensive theoretical approaches to publishing in recent years. This contribution discusses, how far products like learning platforms can be described as results of acts of (educational) publishing or can be considered (…

CATCOM: A Database on Performances of Spanish Classical Theater

2013

The research group DICAT (http://www.uv.es/dicat/index_en.html) has been working for almost twenty years on the creation of research instruments that will enhance scholars' knowledge of Early Modern Spanish theater through the use of digital tools that create new ways to combine and apply data.1 The database Diccionario biografico de actores del teatro clasico espanol (DICAT) (Ferrer Valls) was the result of work done during nearly fifteen years. The DICAT group created a database with almost five thousand entries, which document the activity of actors, actresses, heads of companies, and musicians who worked in Spanish professional theatrical companies during the sixteenth and seventeenth c…
