Student participation in peer interaction
2021
This study explores how students deal with material resources in their peer interaction when working in pairs in an open-ended problem-solving task. The productive use of material resources can be expected to support successful peer work. However, research into social phenomena in peer interaction is needed in order to identify and describe productive and less productive forms of dealing with material resources as students participate in open-ended problem-solving tasks. Consequently, this explorative study responds to this research need. Based on multimodal data, including video recordings, transcribed talk and the written contributions from four pairs of Year 7 students aged 12-13 years, …
Sex steroid hormone receptors, their ligands, and nuclear and non-nuclear pathways
2015
The ability of a cell to respond to a particular hormone depends on the presence of specific receptors for those hormones. Once the hormone has bound to its receptor, and following structural and biochemical modifications to the receptor, it separates from cytoplasmic chaperone proteins, thereby exposing the nuclear localization sequences that result in the activation of the receptor and initiation of the biological actions of the hormone on the target cell. In addition, recent work has demonstrated new pathways of steroid signaling through orphan and cell surface receptors that contribute to more rapid, “non-nuclear” or non-transcriptional effects of steroid hormones, often involving G-pro…
2020
When Germinal was published in 1885, the critic classified Zola as a “socialist” writer. The author himself used this adjective many times referring to his work. At the same time, he didn’t know Marxism and was a resolute opponent to revolution, equality and the government by the people. The paper aims to explain some aspects of Zola’s “socialism” taking into account his origins, his youth experiences and the evolution of his works. This might help to understand the particular meaning done to the term by the writer.
Possible future scenarios for Sicilian cereal cropping in the light of current trends in agricultural policy of the European Union
2008
This paper sets out the results of a research project carried out by the University of Palermo and financed by the Sicilian Region, which aims to establish the impact of the Fischler Reform on Sicilian agriculture, and to project future scenarios that take into account some of the changes that the production process may undergo in the Region, following both the application of the Reform itself (now in force) and the eventual application of indications contained in the Health check. The impacts of the Fischler Reform, and especially the application of the Single Payment scheme to companies, were examined in cereal cropping companies, especially considering the significant amount of durum whe…
The literary dramatic text as a corpus for historical analysis of facework activities
2016
This paper aims to justify the use of theatre plays as valid corpus to characterize aspects of Spanish socio-cultural face, specifically the historical evolution of face work in Spanish. Literature works have not always been considered as valid corpus due to its fictional nature and stylistic purpose. However, this paper aims not only to refute these two arguments against the use of plays, but also to propose different arguments that support the use of this type of corpus. In fact, it is suggested that plays, may constitute data for pragmatic analysis because they present sociocultural implications, interactional development of the action, a wide range of communicative situations and psicop…
Social Science Research in Southeast Asia : the Challenges of Studying Parliamentary Institutions
2019
This paper introduces the challenges of studying parliamentary institutions in Southeast Asia. My focus of research is in three countries’ institutions: national parliaments of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. While in Southeast Asia, it is widely known that studying issues of politics and institutions face challenges – compared to studying culture, for example, this view is arguably no longer valid, however with certainqualification. The comparison of parliamentary tradition between three countries – based on observation of the plenary session - reveals that the effectiveness of parliamentary works is related to parliamentary procedure, and even to the culture of work in the countries. Pa…

Like ships passing in the night? Nonstandard work schedules and spousal satisfaction in Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom
2020
This study examined the associations of work schedules and spousal satisfaction among Finnish (n = 347), Dutch (n = 304) and British (n = 337) parents. In addition to comparing parents with nonstandard schedule with parents in regular day work, the study examined separately the roles played in spousal satisfaction of morning, evening, night and weekend work and other working time-related variables (working hours, changes in and influence over one’s work schedules and spouse’s work schedule). The three-country data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with a multigroup procedure in Mplus. Little evidence for negative associations of work schedules and related factors with spousal…
