Introduction: Hyperosmotic therapy with mannitol is frequently used for treatment cerebral edema, and 320 mOsm/kg H2O has been recommended as a high limit for therapeutic plasma osmolality. However, plasma hyperosmolality may impair cardiac function, increasing the risk of cardiac events. The aim of this study was to analyze the relation between changes in plasma osmolality and electrocardiographic variables and cardiac arrhythmia in patients treated for isolated traumatic brain injury (iTBI). Overdose of Quetiapine—A Case Report with QT Prolongation

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. Although several studies describe the adverse effects of intoxication with Quetiapine, only a few report an extreme overdose without comedications that lead to a life threat. We present a case of a 75-year-old male who tried to attempt suicide by ingesting 28 g of Quetiapine. During the management in the emergency department, both serum and urine samples were collected, allowing a complete pharmacokinetic analysis to be conducted, from the admission to the discharge.

Solvent directs the dimensionality of Cu-dicyanoimidazoles

In this paper, we report one-pot reactions of the same reactants 4,5-dicyanoimidazole and CuI in different solvents. In pure MeCN, the reaction resulted in previously reported MOF structure [Cu(4,5-dicyanoimidazole)]n.(MeCN)0.5n (1). On the other hand, when MeCN/MeOH solvent mixture was used, a new coordination polymer [Cu(4,5-dicyanoimidazole)(MeCN)(CuI)]n (2) was formed. The crystallization yielded very different structures as determined by X-ray crystallography. In 1, the solvent molecule acetonitrile occupies the MOF pores via weak interactions, but in 2 it is coordinated to the metal center. Revisiting the charge density analysis of 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone at 20 K

A high-resolution X-ray diffraction measurement of 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ) at 20 K was carried out. The experimental charge density was modeled using the Hansen–Coppens multipolar expansion and the topology of the electron density was analyzed in terms of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). Two different multipole models, predominantly differentiated by the treatment of the chlorine atom, were obtained. A Prototype of Wireless Sensor for Data Acquisition in Energy Management Systems

A prototype of a wireless sensor for monitoring electrical loads in a smart building is designed and implemented. The sensor can acquire the main electrical parameters of the connected load and, optionally, other physical quantities (e.g., room temperature). Unlike other wireless sensors in literature, the proposed sensor is cheap and small, exploits the Wi-Fi network that is commonly available inside buildings, and uses a lightweight message-based communication paradigm. Cardiac electrical activity is influenced by temperature. In experimental models, the induction of hypothermia and/or hyperthermia has been used for the study of mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmia. A system that allows for localized, controlled induction, besides simultaneously recording electrical activity in the same induced area, needs to be developed ad hoc.
