The place of art works in an exhibition on radiation protection

2015

The travelling exhibition “Vous avez dit radioprotection?” is coproduced by a science centre, (le Pavillon des Sciences), a scientific institution, the Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute (IRSN), and the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération regional authority. It gives an historic perspective on the discovery of radioactivity, and on radiation protection from two main devices: didactic films and artistic creations. Within the framework of a doctorate research in Communication Sciences at the University of Burgundy, France, this case study explores two points of view, the first being the exhibition as a mediating device, and the challenges related to it; the second is related to how th…

Guidance of surface elastic waves along a linear chain of pillars

2016

International audience; The propagation of surface elastic waves, or surface phonons, is considered along a linear and periodic chain of cylindrical pillars sitting on a semi-infinite solid substrate. A variety of guided modes, some of them exhibiting a very low group velocity, are shown to exist at frequencies close to the resonance frequencies of the pillars. Although the pillar diameter is typically smaller than half the relevant wavelength, lateral radiation on the surface is found to be canceled. Surface guidance is explained by the hybridization of the resonating pillars with the continuum of elastic waves of the substrate.

On the Schwarzschild Effect in 3D Two‐Photon Laser Lithography

2019

International audience; The two‐photon Schwarzschild effect in photoresists suitable for 3D laser lithography is revisited. The study ranges over seven orders of magnitude in exposure time (from 1 µs to 10 s) and investigates a wide variety of different photoresist compositions. For short exposure times (“regime I”), the laser power at the polymerization threshold can scale with the inverse square root of the exposure time, as naively to be expected for two‐photon absorption. Substantial deviations occur, however, for low photoinitiator concentrations. For intermediate exposure times (“regime II”), a Schwarzschild‐type of behavior is found, as discussed previously. For very long exposure ti…

Single crystal EXAFS at high pressure

2000

Abstract We present a new technique for structure characterization under high pressure conditions. The use of an undulator beam of the third-generation ESRF source of synchrotron radiation has enabled the first single crystal EXAFS experiments at high pressure using a diamond anvil cell as pressure generator. Taking advantage of the linear polarization of X-rays the technique becomes an orientation-selective probe of the local structure of materials. We describe the principle of the technique and some applications.

Application of a simple algorithm to estimate daily evapotranspiration from NOAA–AVHRR images for the Iberian Peninsula

2007

International audience; Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key process in land surface–atmosphere studies. It mainly depends on water availability and incoming solar radiation and then reflects the interactions between surface water processes and climate. In this paper, a methodology for retrieving ET from low spatial resolution remote sensing data is presented. It is based on the evaporative fraction concept, and it has been applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AHVRR) data acquired over the Iberian Peninsula. The methodology does not require other data than the data provided by the satellite and may be applied to areas with almost spatially constant atmospheric conditions and whi…

Fonctionnalisation de surfaces métalliques par des couches minces d'oxynitrures de titane obtenues par irradiation laser sous atmosphère contrôlée et…

2013

The technological advances in areas such as automotive and aerospace industries require materials capable of withstanding demanding conditions. Surface treatments are effective tools to improve the surface properties of materials while preserving their bulk properties. Besides many conventional processes, laser treatments are efficient methods for hardening and increasing the durability of materials. This work is focused on the growth of titanium oxynitride surface layers by laser irradiation of pure titanium plates with nanosecond pulsed sources. The influence of the laser treatment conditions on the composition and the structure of these surface layers was studied. In particular, for lase…

Influence of O2 loading pre-treatment on the radiation response of pure and fluorine doped silica-based optical fibers

2014

International audience; We investigated the impact of an oxygen pre-loading on pure-silica-core or fluorine-doped-core fiber responses to high irradiation doses (up to 1 MGy(SiO2)). Oxygen enrichment was achieved through a diffusion-based technique and the long term presence of O2 molecules was confirmed by micro-Raman experiments. Online Radiation Induced Attenuation (RIA) experiments were carried out in both the pristine and the O2-loaded optical fibers to investigate the differences induced by this pre-treatment in the UV and visible ranges. Contrary to results recently published on the positive impact of O2 on infrared RIA, our results reveal a RIA increased with O2 presence. Data are a…

A CASE OF JUVENILE STROKE CAUSED BY ACTINIC CERVICAL ARTERIOPATHY

2013

Introduction: Radiation Arteriopathy is a vascular disease characterized by progressive arterial stenosis that may occur after external radiotherapy (RT) directed to a specific body region affected by malignant tumours. The arterial damage usually starts many years after the injury and the specific pathogenesis is unknown, though atherosclerosis praecox, endothelial damage, adventitial fibrosis and vasa vasorum obliteration are likely involved mechanisms. In patients with previously irradiated neck or head cancers, supra aortic arteries can be affected in their segments exposed to radiations leading to a gradual lumen narrowing. This late complication leads to a progressive stenosis of extr…

Light-Activated Sensitive Probes for Amine Detection

2017

Our new, simple, and accurate colorimetric method is based on diarylethenes (DAEs) for the rapid detection of a wide range of primary and secondary amines. The probes consist of aldehyde- or ketone-substituted diarylethenes, which undergo an amine-induced decoloration reaction, selectively to give the ring-closed isomer. Thus, these probes can be activated at the desired moment by light irradiation, with a sensitivity that allows the detection of amines at concentrations as low as 10exp−6 M in solution. In addition, the practical immobilization of DAEs on paper makes it possible to detect biogenic amines, such as cadaverine, in the gas phase above a threshold of 12 ppbv within 30 seconds. P…

The young hard active Sun: soft X-ray irradiation of tryptophan in water solutions

2010

AbstractThe X-ray emission of the young Sun was much harder and intense than today and might have played a significant role in the evolution of complex organics in protoplanetary environments. We investigate the effects of soft X-rays on tryptophan molecules in aqueous solutions at room temperature. As results of the irradiation experiments we detect several light species indicative of fragmentation, together with large molecular structures such as tryptophan dipeptide and tripeptide. Complexification is more evident in H2O solution than in D2O, probably due to isotopic effects. The abundances of peptides depend on the irradiation dose and decrease with increasing energy deposition. Radical…
