Vibrational analysis of the electronic spectrum of ethylene based onab initio SCF-CI calculations

1972

Ab initio calculations for CH2 twisting and CC stretching vibrational wavefunctions and energy levels are reported for various electronic states of ethylene C2H4. Electronic transition moments between these states are also obtained to allow a calculation of the oscillator strengths for vibrational transitions involved in various electronic band systems; from this study it is concluded that thevertical electronic energy differenceΔE e may differ significantly from the energy of the absorption maximumΔE max with which it is often equated. In particular it is found in the case of theπ→π * singlet-singlet excitation of ethylene that theΔE e value overestimates the most probable vibrational tran…

Nanoelectron spectroscopy for chemical analysis: a novel energy filter for imaging x-ray photoemission spectroscopy

2005

An ovel instrument for imaging ESCA is described. It is based on a tandem arrangement of two hemispherical energy analysers used as an imaging energy filter. The main spherical aberration (α 2 -term) of the analyser is corrected by the antisymmetry of the tandem configuration. The kinetic energy range useable for imaging extends up to 1.6 keV; this is compatible with Mg and Al Kα laboratory x-ray sources. First experiments on the chemical surface composition of a Cu0.98Bi0.02 polycrystal, a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure and Ag crystallites on Si(111) have been performed using synchrotron radiation. The results reveal an energy resolutio no f190 meV and a lateral resolution (edge resolution) o…

Low-cost set-up for Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in diamond anvil cell from 4000 to 400 cm−1

2011

An experimental set-up for Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) studies at high pressure in the mid-IR region (400–4000 cm−1) is constructed using a compact TEO-400 FTIR interferometer module and an external microscopic optical bench with cassegrain focusing objectives. Cassegrain-type reflective objectives act as an excellent beam condenser that facilitates the interfacing between FTIR spectrometer and diamond anvil cell. This set-up is capable of recording transmission and reflection infrared spectra at high pressure. Preliminary results are reported both in the reflection (pressure dependence of polar phonons in CuWO4) and transmission configuration (polarized light absorption of polar phon…

Time-of-flight photoemission electron microscopy – a new way to chemical surface analysis

2001

Abstract The time structure of synchrotron radiation at BESSY I (Berlin) was utilised to operate a photoemission electron microscope in the time-of-flight mode. The electrons that are emitted from the sample surface with different energies are dispersed in a drift tube subsequent to the imaging optics. Two ways of fast image detection have been explored, a fast gated intensified CCD camera (800 ps gate time) and a special counting electronics in combination with a 3D (x,y,t)-resolving delay line detector ( time resolution ps). The latter device has a lateral resolution of about 50 μm in the image plane being equivalent to 1000 pixels along the image diagonal. An energy resolution of 400 meV…

Fe 2p photoemission magnetic dichroism with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation and with unpolarized A1 Kα radiation

1997

We report on the measurements and analysis of Fe 2p magnetic dichroism in the angular distribution of the photoelectrons from remanently magnetized Fe(100)surfaces with unpolarized, monochromatized A1 Kα X-rays of 1486 eV energy (MDAD)and with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation of energy 800 eV (LMDAD). The two experiments verify the atomic photoionization model of (L)MDAD including the dichroism effect between field-averaged experiments of different chirality.

"Though It Be but Little, It Is Fierce": Excited State Engineering of Conjugated Organic Materials by Fluorination.

2016

Fluorination is frequently used to significantly change the properties of conjugated organic materials due to fluorine’s exceptional properties; well-known is its impact on electronic structure, but it also impacts the geometry despite fluorine’s small size. Less known, the changes in the electronic and geometrical properties may provoke drastic changes of the excited state properties like batho- and hypsochromic shifts of absorption and emission bands (inter alia leading to excited state switching), hypo- and hyperchromic effects, spectral broadening, and changes of the nonradiative deactivation pathways. The state of the art on these issues is summarized in the current Perspective to stim…

Formation, diffusion, and aggregation of radiation-induced defects in MgO and α-Al 2 O 3

1997

MgO and M2O3 (corundum) are important ceramic materials with several technological applications including theirpossible use in fusion reactors' . Weare therefore studying the properties ofpoint defects (vacancies, interstitials, andtheir aggregates) and electronic defects (trapped holes and electrons) in these materials. Pair-potential (PP) calculationswere carried out using the Mott-Littleton (ML) two-region strategy, as implemented in the computer code CASCADEdue to Leslie. Details ofthe method, including the construction ofPPs, are in the literature3. For semi-empirical INDO(intermediate neglect ofdifferential overlap) calculations computer codes developed at the University of Riga were …

1974

The formation and behaviour of radiation-induced free radicals in statistical copolymers of ethoxyvinylthiomethane (1a) with N-vinylpyrrolidone (2) (1:2,5) and of ethylthiovinylthiomethane (1b) with 2 (1:3,5) has been studied using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. After a γ-irradiation of the copolymers at 77K Cα-radicals in the vinylpyrrolidone moieties could be detected. Investigations on the behaviour of these radicals with an annealing procedure revealed that only in the copolymer (3b) with the dithioacetal group a transfer reaction of hydrogen atoms to the Cα-radicals in the vinylpyrrolidone moieties occurs. This process may be regarded as a repair mechanism. Es wurde die Bildung …

Determination of Olive Oil Parameters by Near Infrared Spectrometry

2010

Publisher Summary Near infrared (NIR) covers the region between 780 and 2500 nm, and based on the absorption, transmission or reflection of the light, NIR spectroscopy provides a fast and non-destructive technique which is very useful for the simultaneous determination of several compounds in the same sample. Food NIR spectra comprise broad bands corresponding to overtones and combinations of vibrational modes involving C–H, O–H, and N–H chemical bonds, providing a great amount of information which properly treated by chemometrics is useful for classification and for the quantification of many parameters. The olive oil extraction process starts in the harvesting and transport of olive fruit…

Intensity-modulated extended-field chemoradiation plus simultaneous integrated boost in the pre-operative treatment of locally advanced cervical canc…

2015

Objective: To investigate the feasibility and determine the recommended pre-operative intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) dose of extended-field chemoradiation along with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) dose escalation. Methods: A radiation dose of 40Gy over 4 weeks, 2Gy/fraction, was delivered to the tumour and the lymphatic drainage (planning target volume, PTV3), which encompassed a volume larger than standard (common iliac lymphatic area up to its apex, in front of the L3 vertebra), concurrently with chemotherapy (cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil). Radiation dose was escalated to the pelvis (PTV2) and to the macroscopic disease (PTV1) with the SIB-IMRT strategy. Three dose levels we…
