Three-step decay of time correlations at polymer-solid interfaces

Two-step decay of relaxation functions, i.e., time scale separation between microscopic dynamics and structural relaxation, is the defining signature of the structural glass transition. We show that for glass-forming polymer melts at an attractive surface slow desorption kinetics introduces an additional time scale separation among the relaxational degrees of freedom leading to a three-step decay. The inherent length scale of this process is the radius of gyration in contrast to the segmental scale governing the glass transition. Phase transitions and phase equilibria in spherical confinement

Phase transitions in finite systems are rounded and shifted and affected by boundary effects due to the surface of the system. This interplay of finite size and surface effects for fluids confined inside of a sphere of radius $R$ is studied by a phenomenological theory and Monte Carlo simulations of a model for colloid-polymer mixtures. For this system the phase separation in a colloid-rich phase and a polymer-rich phase has been previously studied extensively in the bulk. It is shown that spherical confinement can strongly enhance the miscibility of the mixture. Abstract Hemocyanins are multisubunit respiratory proteins found in many invertebrates. They bind oxygen highly cooperatively. However, not much is known about the structural basis of this behavior. We studied the influence of the physiological allosteric effectorl-lactate on the oxygenated quaternary structure of the 2×6-meric hemocyanin from the lobster Homarus americanus employing small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The presence of 20 mm l-lactate resulted in different scattering curves compared with those obtained in the absence of l-lactate. Repeatability of in vitro power profile measurements for multifocal contact lenses

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device (NIMO TR1504, Lambda-X, Belgium) for measuring multifocal contact lens power profiles. Methods The NIMO TR1504 was used to measure power profiles 30 times for each of 10 different contact lenses from 4 major companies. All contact lenses were labelled as −3 D for distance vision; half were for high addition and half for low addition. The optical zone in all measurements was set to 3-mm radius. For each lens, the median power profile and the residuals of the 30 measurements were calculated. We have investigated how aerosols affect the height above cloud base of rain and ice hydrometeor initiation and the subsequent vertical evolution of cloud droplet size and number concentrations in growing convective cumulus. For this purpose we used in situ data of hydrometeor size distributions measured with instruments mounted on HALO aircraft during the ACRIDICON–CHUVA campaign over the Amazon during September 2014. The results show that the height of rain initiation by collision and coalescence processes (Dr, in units of meters above cloud base) is linearly correlated with the number concentration of droplets (Nd in cm−3) nucleated at cloud base (Dr ≈ 5 ⋅ Nd). Breakdown of Burton-Prime-Slichter approach and lateral solute segregation in radially converging flows

A theoretical study is presented of the effect of a radially converging melt flow, which is directed away from the solidification front, on the radial solute segregation in simple solidification models. We show that the classical Burton-Prim-Slichter (BPS) solution describing the effect of a diverging flow on the solute incorporation into the solidifying material breaks down for the flows converging along the solidification front. The breakdown is caused by a divergence of the integral defining the effective boundary layer thickness which is the basic concept of the BPS theory. A review of colour center and nanostructure creation in LiF under heavy ion irradiation

A study of radiation damage in LiF crystals under irradiation with MeV–GeV energy ions, from 12C to 238U, at temperatures varying from 8 to 300 K, depending on the ion energy, energy loss and irradiation temperature, is presented. For light ions (12C, 14N) at low fluences, it is mainly color centers that are created. Increasing the fluence leads to the overlapping of tracks and the creation of more complex color centers, defect aggregates and dislocations. For ions with an energy loss above a threshold value (dE/dx = 10 keV nm−1) the tracks exhibit a central core damage region with a radius of 1–2 nm, surrounded by an extended halo which mainly contains single color centers. The Impact of the Mass Spectrum of Lenses in Quasar Microlensing Studies. Constraints on a Mixed Population of Primordial Black Holes and Stars

We show that quasar microlensing magnification statistics induced by a population of point microlenses distributed according to a mass-spectrum can be very well approximated by that of a single-mass, "monochromatic", population. When the spatial resolution (physically defined by the source size) is small as compared with the Einstein radius, the mass of the monochromatic population matches the geometric mean of the mass-spectrum. Otherwise, the best-fit mass can be larger.
