Data from: I smell where you walked – how chemical cues influence movement decisions in ants

2016

Interactions between animals are not restricted to direct encounters. Frequently, individuals detect the proximity of others through cues unintentionally left by others, such as prey species assessing predation risk based on indirect predator cues. However, while the importance of indirect cues in predator–prey interactions has been intensely studied, their role in interactions among competitors, and their consequences for community structure, are little known to date. Ant communities are usually structured by aggressive interactions between competing species. Responding to cues of others should be useful to avoid competitors or discover food sources. In ants and other insects, such cues in…

Effects of a computerized decision support system on care planning for pressure ulcers and malnutrition in nursing homes: an intervention study.

2013

Author's accepted version (post-print). Background: Nursing documentation is essential for facilitating the flow of information to guarantee continuity, quality and safety in care. High-quality nursing documentation is frequently lacking; the implementation of computerized decision support systems is expected to improve clinical practice and nursing documentation. Aim: The present study aimed at investigate the effects of a computerized decision support system and an educational program as intervention strategies for improved nursing documentation practice on pressure ulcers and malnutrition in nursing homes. Design, setting and participants: An intervention study with two intervention grou…

Challenging equal temperament : perceived differences between twelve-tone equal temperament and twelve fifth-tones tuning

2017

A listening experiment was arranged to evaluate perceptual preferences between two musical tuning systems: twelve-tone equal temperament (i.e. the current international standard) and twelve fifth-tones tuning. The latter being a system that, according to its author Maria Renold, provides a more accurate and aurally genuine reproduction of musical harmonics. Hence, it is considered a superior tuning method compared to the equal temperament tuning. 34 participants (mainly experienced musicians) evaluated realistic musical stimuli consisting of intervals, chords and simple musical sequences using a grand piano timbre. Results showed that the standard twelve-tone equal temperament system was fo…

Golgi Fragmentation in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Is There a Common Cause?

2019

In most mammalian cells, the Golgi complex forms a continuous ribbon. In neurodegenerative diseases, the Golgi ribbon of a specific group of neurons is typically broken into isolated elements, a very early event which happens before clinical and other pathological symptoms become evident. It is not known whether this phenomenon is caused by mechanisms associated with cell death or if, conversely, it triggers apoptosis. When the phenomenon was studied in diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, it was attributed to a variety of causes, including the presence of cytoplasmatic protein aggregates, malfunctioning of intracellular traffic and/or alterations i…

One Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks for Seizure Onset Detection Using Long-term Scalp and Intracranial EEG

2021

Epileptic seizure detection using scalp electroencephalogram (sEEG) and intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) has attracted widespread attention in recent two decades. The accurate and rapid detection of seizures not only reflects the efficiency of the algorithm, but also greatly reduces the burden of manual detection during long-term electroencephalogram (EEG) recording. In this work, a stacked one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model combined with a random selection and data augmentation (RS-DA) strategy is proposed for seizure onset detection. Firstly, we segmented the long-term EEG signals using 2-sec sliding windows. Then, the 2-sec interictal and ictal segments w…

IR Bandshapes of Intramolecularly H-Bonded Systems II. 2,4-Dibromophenol

1984

A detailed quantitative study of the IR bandshape of the ϑs(OH) vibration of 2,4-dibromophenol in a series of solvents is presented.A distinct dependence of band positions, shape parameters, correlation functions and correlation times from solvent polarity has been found. The contribution of various shaping mechanisms to the profile is discussed.
