Visible photothermal deflection spectroscopy using microcantilevers

2012

International audience; Photothermal deflection spectroscopy based on bi-material cantilevers combines the sensitivity of miniature sensors and the selectivity of optical spectroscopy. In this paper, we report on the photothermal response of the microcantilevers functionalized with nanometer thin organic films in the visible region. Unlike responses in the infrared regime, in the optical region, light absorption by all the cantilever constituents must be considered for extraction of the physical parameters of the organic layer. A model of photothermal deflection for the optical region has been developed for two absorbing layers consisting of a thick metal (>200 nm) and a thin organic film. …

Effects of Bending on Raman-active Vibration Modes of Carbon Nanotubes

2008

We investigate vibration modes and their Raman activity of single-walled carbon nanotubes that are bent within their intrinsic elastic limits. By implementing novel boundary conditions for density-functional based tight-binding, and using non-resonant bond polarization theory, we discover that Raman activity can be induced by bending. Depending on the degree of bending, high-energy Raman peaks change their positions and intensities significantly. These effects can be explained by migration of nodes and antinodes along tube circumference. We discuss the challenge of associating the predicted spectral changes with experimental observations.

Cathodoluminescence characterization of ZnO/ZnS nanostructures anodized under hydrodynamic conditions

2018

[EN] ZnO/ZnS nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a simple electrochemical anodization of zinc in a glycerol based electrolyte containing sulfide-ammonium fluoride. The influence of different hydrodynamic conditions and anodization potentials during anodization on the morphological and electronic properties of the obtained ZnO/ZnS nanostructures was studied. The anodized samples were characterized using confocal Raman microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FE-SEM), cathodoluminescence (CL), and photoelectrochemical water splitting tests under standard AM 1.5 conditions. The results showed that hydrodynamic conditions and higher potenti…

Photosensitivity and second harmonic generation in chalcogenide arsenic sulfide poled glasses

2011

International audience; The present work investigates the photoinduced Second Harmonic Generation processes in thermally poled arsenic sulfide glasses. SHG Maker fringes patterns associated to SHG kinetic measurements about illumination and Raman spectroscopy have been conducted in order to bring new information which confirm the combined influence of charge carriers and mid-range glass structural modification on the poling and the photodarkening mechanisms.

Chalcogenide Glasses Based on Germanium Disulfide for Second Harmonic Generation

2007

International audience; High second-order susceptibilities are created by thermal poling in bulk germanium disulfide based chalcogenide glasses. Experimental conditions of the poling treatment (temperature, voltage, time) were optimized for each glass composition. The second-order nonlinear signals were recorded by using the Maker fringes experiment and a second-order coefficient χ(2) up to 8 pm V-1 was measured in the Ge25Sb10S65 glass. This value is obtained using a simulation based on accurate knowledge of the thickness of the nonlinear layer. Two mechanisms are proposed to explain the creation of a nonlinear layer under the anode: the formation and the migration of charged defects towar…

Magnetic field dependent thermal conductance in La0.67Ca0.33MnO3

2015

Abstract Using the differential 3 ω technique we measured the low-temperature out-of-plane thermal conductance of heteroepitaxial thin film La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO). The magnetic field dependence of the thermal conductance reached values of up to 23%. The effect was observed to be largest in the vicinity of the metal–insulator transition, since the enhancement in thermal conductance is triggered by the colossal magnetoresistance effect increasing the electronic contribution to the thermal conductance. The point of the maximal change was adjusted by post-annealing the samples in an oxygen atmosphere. Samples with a higher transition temperature and lower epitaxial strain displayed a lower mag…

Resonant Raman characterization of InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures

2006

InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures and thin films with In composition ranging from 0.03 to 0.1 are characterized by means of Raman scattering excited at various energies in the ultra violet range, tuning the laser excitation energy through the band gap of In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N. It is shown that the addition of In to the Al y Ga 1-y N alloy diminishes considerably the vibration energy of the A 1 (LO) phonon mode. The phonon line is asymmetric on the low energy side, and the asymmetry increases with In content, while the main peak shifts to lower energies. A shift of the phonon energy has also been observed when the excitation energy is close to the absorption edge of the In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N layer.…

Lattice phonon modes of the high-pressure phase CuCl-IV

1999

Raman spectra of isotopically pure CuCl samples ${(}^{63}\mathrm{CuCl}$ and ${}^{65}\mathrm{CuCl})$ were measured under hydrostatic pressure up to 14 GPa at low temperature $(5 \mathrm{K}).$ Up to six Raman modes were resolved for the binary BC8-analog phase CuCl-IV in the range from 4.1 to 14 GPa. The phonon dispersion relations of this phase were calculated within a rigid ion model. Based on this calculation an assignment for the observed Raman-active modes is proposed. The calculated pressure dependences of mode frequencies reproduce the experimental results. Raman spectra support the existence of the phase CuCl-IIa in a narrow pressure range from 3.3 to 4.1 GPa.

Growth zoning and strain patterns inside diamond crystals as revealed by Raman maps

2005

The Raman mapping technique provides a non-destructive means of studying internal growth textures and other micro-structural heterogeneity inside diamond single-crystals. Raman maps showing distribution patterns of the bandwidth (FWHM) of the main first-order lattice vibration of diamond ( LO=TO phonon at ~1332 cm −1 ) along two-dimensional planes inside diamond crystals may reveal the internal growth zoning of these crystals. The observed zoning is affected, and in some cases even obscured in micro-areas adjacent to inclusions, by patterns of heterogeneous strain in the diamond. We present Raman maps obtained from diamond crystals containing large, single-crystal graphite inclusions, from …

Surface optical phonon modes in GaN nanowire arrays: Dependence on nanowire density and diameter

2012

We present a systematic study, by means of Raman scattering, of the surface optical modes of GaN nanowires (NW) as a function of the fill factor, defined as the relative concentration of GaN NWs and the surrounding air. We show that changes in the fill factor from 0.8 to 0.3 result in a shift of the surface optical mode of more than 60 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, which is explained by theoretical calculations of surface vibrations for a cylindrical nanowire based on the dielectric continuum model. Two cases are considered: the effective dielectric function approximation (Maxwell-Garnett approximation) and a model for isolated NWs with various diameters. We conclude, in agreement with the Maxw…
