Selfish vs. Unselfish Optimization of Network Creation

We investigate several variants of a network creation model: a group of agents builds up a network between them while trying to keep the costs of this network small. The cost function consists of two addends, namely (i) a constant amount for each edge an agent buys and (ii) the minimum number of hops it takes sending messages to other agents. Despite the simplicity of this model, various complex network structures emerge depending on the weight between the two addends of the cost function and on the selfish or unselfish behaviour of the agents.
Pricing of Asian exchange rate options under stochastic interest rates as a sum of options

The aim of the paper is to develop pricing formulas for long term European type Asian options written on the exchange rate in a two currency economy. The exchange rate as well as the foreign and domestic zero coupon bond prices are assumed to follow geometric Brownian motions. The emphasis is devoted to the discretely sampled Asian option. It is shown how the value of this option can be approximated as the sum of Black-Scholes options. The formula is obtained under the extension of results developed by Rogers and Shi (1995) and Jamshidian (1991). In addition bounds for the pricing error are determined. Comparing with Monte Carlo simulation the pricing is found to be very precise.

The expression, purification, crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction studies of mouse centrin1 are reported. Centrins belong to a family of Ca{sup 2+}-binding EF-hand proteins that play a fundamental role in centrosome duplication and the function of cilia. To shed light on the structure–function relationship of these proteins, mouse centrin1 has been crystallized. The mouse centrin1 has been expressed in Escherichia coli as a GST-centrin fusion protein containing a thrombin protease cleavage site between the fusion partners. Synthesis and cytotoxic activity of novel C7-functionalized spongiane diterpenes.

Based on two lead cytotoxic spongiane diterpenes, a new series of C7-oxygenated derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antitumor activity in vitro against the cancer cell lines HeLa and HEp-2. In general, introduction of either hydroxyl or acetoxy groups at C-7 did not improve the resultant cytotoxicity, while the presence of a butyrate ester led to more active compounds (CC(50)=4.0-9.5 microM).

Extracts from Bupleurum fruticescens were examined for oral and topical anti-inflammatory activities. Tunable Spin-Crossover Behavior of the Hofmann-like Network {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN) 4 ]} through Host-Guest Chemistry

A study of the spin-crossover (SCO) behavior of the tridimensional porous coordination polymer {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]} (bpac=bis(4-pyridyl) acetylene) on adsorption of different mono- and polyhalobenzene guest molecules is presented. The resolution of the crystal structure of {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN) 4]}A?G (G=1,2,4-trichlorobenzene) shows preferential guest sites establishing I?A?A?A?I? stacking interactions with the host framework. These host-guest interactions may explain the relationship between the modification of the SCO behavior and both the chemical nature of the guest molecule (electronic factors) and the number of adsorbed molecules (steric factors). Exchange Rates and Stock Prices in the MENA countries: What Role for Oil?

This paper considers the linkage between stock prices and exchange rates in four MENA (Middle East and North Africa) emerging markets. In contrast to the existing evidence that uses a global market index to uncover such a relationship it is found that for the sample countries oil prices emerge as the dominant factor in the above relationship. The paper considers the presence of regime shifts and evidence is found of cointegration only for the period following the 1999 oil price shock. Readjustment towards equilibrium in each stock market occurs via oil price changes. Finally, a number of robustness checks are performed and persistence profiles produced. Wiley Online Library
From Zeno to Chrysippus

This chapter is about the origin and development of early Stoic epistemology. I discuss how Zeno of Citium, the founder of the Stoa, was influenced by his predecessors and interpreted by his successors. I argue that Stoicism rely on two basic assumptions for which Socrates is the main predecessor, namely that human beings are at home in the world and that it is only by using our rational abilities to detect salient truths and organize them into skills that we can successfully orient ourselves in this world.
